So basically we still don't really know much. Etsy continue to be vague about their policies while also telling us they're adding more clarification. The hamster wheel continues...

Agreed! The only absolute I see right now is that "It is prohibited to use a photo of the blank product or a mockup with placeholder text (e.g. “Your Text Here”) as the main image." for made by you or designed by you personalized or custom items. Also, looks like Etsy wants an accurate representation of quantity too for the listing! "By accurately portraying the condition, quality, and quantity of your items" The rest is speculation at this point, but I will keep you updated!

How I look at it is they rather you take your own photos of the finished product, but they allow mockups as long as it's of the finished product, if you can't get a sample of your POD product/s then ask a friend or family member who ever has placed an order to take a photo of the finished proct snd give you permission to use it as the 1st product photo, if no b e of your family or friends placed an order then ask a customer if they could do that and get their permission to use it... It's very possible to get a photo of the finished product whether it be a family member, a friend, or customer, you can only ask, then you can with their permission of course use that image as the product image that they'll see first... just a matter of asking the customer, if the customer is family or a friend it makes it easier to ask them since you know them... never hurts to ask for a photo of the finished product.. If it's one you've made yourself you take photos of the product, and if it's personalised ask the customer if it's ok if you use the photo you took of it as the 1st picture when personalised always ask permission unless it's yours...

It talks about POD and customized physical items, but it doesn’t talk about digital products, such as templates and printables. I have 500 listings and this is a nightmare

We are monitoring this closely. You are correct. They only show one example of a digital product and it is in the creativity standards article. The example shows a digital file for wedding invitations as a "finished product" so what it "could" look like when the buyer uses the digital file. When possible this is what needs to be done. So, if you sell digital patterns, you first thumbnail should show the finished product, that will be made from that digital pattern. If you sell any type of canva templates, You need to show what that template "could" look like as a finished design for the shopper. NO PLACEHOLDER text show the types of customization. You other images can support this though. Feel free to email me your shop at admin@bykristinanicole.com and I can take a look and advise further!

@@ByKristinaNicole For me, I have placeholders for personal info like “PayPal” or a phone number or QR code. I don’t understand how putting a fake PayPal account name is any better than a placeholder. If anything it could cause issues…using a fake one that is real

Etsy needs to completely overhaul this insane policy. Sellers seem to almost universally hate it, and the vagueness of some of the rules and what applies to whom, is maddening. I operate a fairly large store that supports my family, and I use artist renders of items that I sell because it's all POD. There's something like 1400 individual, unique items that I offer. Printing all of them and taking photos is wildly impractical and prohibitively expensive.

@@joenagy96 I do NOT believe you have to TAKE YOUR OWN PHOTOS. I believe you can still use mock-ups as long as they are original, not purchased. Etsy doesn’t want to see generic mockups-ups that 20+ SELLERS are using! Be original and make sure the photos accurately represent the final product!
@joenagy96

@@najaxon47 The problem is that it's very unclear whether this is actually the case. Etsy's wording is quite vague when it comes to mockups. For example, I use mock ups provided by the artists that I work with. But there are other sellers on Etsy who work with the same artists who use the same mock ups. This is the gray area in Etsy's new policy. It's technically not in violation, I GUESS...but it doesn't help them with the issue they're looking to address. Which, by the way, is not a real issue. Not one of Etsy's struggles are due to too many listings with T-Shirts that say "your design here" or something similar. Not one.

It's really tough, with Etsy everyday you wake up to the possibility of a permanent ban with these vague rules.

@@prosk8er1995 exactly...It's maddening trying to work around all of their BS. I run a successful shop that does about 100 orders every week and because Etsy has everything automated from a support standpoint, it's impossible to get clarity on almost anything. It's truly infuriating. Even when you get a legal team involved and go through their formal dispute resolution process, it's rare to get anything substantive from them.

Where this might cause an issue is for creators that make one- or two-of-a-kind products and would like to offer personalization. I make products from reclaimed wood which I often find in very limited amounts. So I can only make two or maybe three items. Wasting one of my builds to show what a monogram (or whatever) might look like on the product is going to cut into my profits. Based on what you said here, it looks like making something on Cricket and then placing it on the item (a mockup?) is a no-go. You really get the feeling that Etsy is trying to do away with the small creators. I guess they want to be another multi-gazillion dollar on-line retailer. That's what happens when you have shareholders.

I think part of the problem is that there are so many different types of items that do belong on Etsy that its hard to create policies and guidelines that cover situations and products that are allowed while also banning behavior that shouldn’t be allowed, especially from sellers who are trying to sell non-handmade products. From their perspective, if the goal is to make sure products are being represented accurately, requiring an actual photo of the product for most listings seems like a simple way to accomplish that if don’t look deeper and consider the fact that it isn’t always practical for every type of product on the site. The problem is that most of sellers who will change their listing photos to comply with the new guidelines are the ones who were already representing their products accurately, and the products/sellers these new guidelines were designed to deal are also the ones that don’t care and just want make a quick buck.

Actually, I think this would be "ok" if done well. Create a sign out of your reclaimed wood and take a photo of it and then overlay the personalized/custom design in Canva, PS, or Affinity photo. As long as you do it well and the design doesn't look off or floaty (lowering the transparency helps here) you should be fine because it would in fact accurately represent the finished product or the "real deal" as Etsy states. This is still speculation at this point. But I am doing more research and I will keep you updated!

@@tephwilliams This is a mindset and value base that not all sellers share, sadly. Set aside the fact that I am a photographer, I would never sell a product I didn't personally have hands on myself at some point. Even if that was simply a sample to test quality. I would never buy mock-ups (also why i don't sell them,) I would 100% create my own to streamline and automate my process more, but they would be 100% accurate and representative of the product sold. However, there are a lot of sellers out there that are not willing to put the work in. They don't care about quality or building a reputable brand/business. They are just looking for quick money. I don't think Etsy expected this to turn into such a fad/trend like it did during and after covid. Etsy experienced growing pains and some really bad ones with bad sellers. These quick buck people won't last. They aren't willing to do the work needed to sustain and eventually they will move on to the next fad!

I'm so glad I found this video I'm planning on opening my first t-shirt pod on Etsy have my designs all set and next step is making mockups but I came across the new image policies and this video was extremely informative. I fall into the design category so after hearing everything in here and taking my own look at the policy I *think* that means I'm able to use the stock photo generated after adding my design to my printing partners generator since the mockups created are literally of that specific shirt that will be sent to customers. I truly feel for people that have been used to how things were with Etsy and now might have to make some changes but hopefully we'll get a clearer explanation from Etsy sooner than later. Great video, looking forward to part 2!

@@Aviator2K88 I am working on part 2 now as Etsy has emailed sellers who are breaking their new guidelines. I am asking sellers to submit data so we can narrow down the issue. I HIGHLY recommend creating original mockups. You can take the POD product mock-up and remove the background and do your own thing. Etsy wants original photos of the finished product. This can be achieved with mock-ups. They want the images to look realistic.

@@najaxon47 Thanks for the reply and suggestion I took one of the pod mockups removed the background and am currently working on my own design to add to it. So far so good once I have that down will have to repeat for the rest but at least now I have somewhat of a plan as far as how to make original, realistic looking mockups using the exact shirt I'll be selling. Thanks again will be keeping a lookout for part 2 when it drops.

I think the image rule means you need to order your own finished product and picture it yourself for the main picture. This should dramatically reduce the number of sellers who plagiarize others works for free. Its not so free anymore. ...unless it is a personalized product.

This is still up for debate. I think this would be a great rule... however, Etsy's language is very vague using terms like "actual finished product" "real deal" mockups can accurately represent the finished product when done correctly. The only absolute I see about using mockups for the first thumbnail is "It is prohibited to use a photo of the blank product or a mockup with placeholder text (e.g. “Your Text Here”) as the main image." for made by you or designed by you personalized or custom items. Thank you so much for this video and trying to make sense of the new rules. I'd like to know your opinion on listing photos for digital downloads. I sell invitation templates that the buyer customizes before printing or sending digitally. Do the new rules mean that i have to make prints of my invitations and then photograph them? I never use your name or your text here, i make up a name, date, address... Thanks again

That is not how I am reading it. The only absolute I see is "It is prohibited to use a photo of the blank product or a mockup with placeholder text (e.g. One question I have about digital downloads is, will it be against policy to show the digital download as a final product the customer will create. Because technically if you were to print a digital card download onto paper and take a photo of that, you are inaccurately representing the final product they will receive because they are not buying a printed copy, they are just buying the file. so this brings up a great point too! I am going to spend a large portion of tomorrow watching other videos from coaches to see their perspective and see if we can come up with some common ground here.

So if I’m selling an Ebook which is digital….. can I use a mock-up of a iPad with my finished ebook cover in the iPad mock-up ?
@ByKristinaNicole
@ByKristinaNicole 6 күн бұрын
We don't have a lot of specific info on digital, but yes, I believe that is ok... as long as you create an original photo (meaning you haven't purchased a mock-up that other sellers could use as well) Etsy wants original images that accurately portray the final product that will be received. In the creativity standards they give a digital file example of what the buyer can do with your digital file, showing printed invitations.
