You might be thinking of the sound of a great horned owl. They're the most common owl across all of North America, so in American media they're always used as the stock sound for owls. They don't live in other parts of the world though, which is why you may have never actually heard an owl make a sound like it.

In germany we call them "Uhu" owls

I don't find them creepy. They are important to farmers and even city workers as they are nature's version of the B2 bomber. They swoop out of nowhere and rain death on rodents that spread nice little diseases and destroy crops. I know a girl who lived on a farm in Oklahoma and they had an owl that always lived in the barn. Why else do some barns never have problems with rodents while houses in the big city do? I wouldn't mind having an owl in my back yard.

Some definitely can be, and that's by design. There's a smaller species that can twist its facial features to look like a demon! It's meant to scare predators. I saw it in Illinois.

These types are to me.The one i find scary are the ones with tiny eyes(like the great greys) and some barn owls(for their void-like black eyes.

I wish there was an English speaking equivalent to Yoll’s channel or Gen3 I’ll stare at owls ALL DAY but I’d also like to be able to learn at the same time
