European Hornets vs a Badass Ant

One of the oak trees in our yard is oozing something sweet and some European Hornets are very attracted to it. On the day I was shooting the hornets, an ant came up and decided he wanted some too. The hornets weren't in the sharing mood, but the ant held it's own against the giants. One hornet eventually carried the ant away, but didn't kill it.

@odd maner Yes... If we had absolutely no fear, we'd be dead the first time we went to cross the street. Fear has stuck with our species for a good reason. That doesn't mean we should all be puss-cakes; sometimes it's good to overcome a fear, especially an irrational one (i.e., fear of exploding if you touch a doorknob with both hands - DON'T DO IT!!!), but otherwise, fear has been part of what's enabled our species to (arguably) become the dominant one on the planet.

Hornet got tired and flung the ant lol...but yeah, Ants are beasts in their own right so even hornets don’t really want problems with them. One on one is one thing, but a whole ant colony? That spells huge problems for the hornets. Hornets will defend as a colony but attack individually. Ants will defend and attack, all as one. My favorite insect hands down.

Nice video! This is how the wasps behave, they are afraid of being attacked by many ants. In fact, the hornet is much stronger than the carpenter ant. I watched a paper wasp, which was afraid of an ant. Then the ant attacked and the wasp had to fight. The ant was killed. I think it's the same for hornets, but they're trying to drop the ant away without being attacked..

Certainly a very aggressive wasp type will be less hesitant about attacking an ant, but it's also evolution. Many wasps aren't used to ants so they'll treat it as a competitor, avoid conflict as much as possible.

@@samueloconnor8546 Those wasps defend their nest, but this hornet was outside the nest area. Actually, some wasps are kinda afraid of ants even close to the nest. Some aren't, but I think that really NO WASP would pick a serious fight with an ant if it's not forced to do so (eg. when the ant catches and stings the wasp). You don't get the point. I say that a wasp is not gonna attack an ant when not necessary. It's likely to try to throw the ant away or escape.

Not sap, but a white frothy liquid - "White Flux or Alcoholic flux, is a stress-related disease that affects sweet gum, oak, elm and willow trees. The disease is caused by a microorganism that ferments the sap that seeps or bleeds from cracks and wounds in the bark. The result is a white, frothy ooze that has a fermenting odor similar to beer. Alcoholic flux is some- times called frothy flux or foamy canker because of the white ooze that looks and feels like melted marshmal- lows.
