Can you live car-free in America? Why I ride a scooter aka vespa or moped and left car ownership in the dust.
This is the first video in a series that will compare American Urbanism V European Urbanism. Whew. Quite a lopsided contest.
When my wife and I stayed in Europe for a month, we could not help but notice the crazy amount of scooters aka vespa or moped everywhere.
Scooters have become part of the European urban lifestyle and culture. They are often associated with a sense of freedom, convenience, and a more relaxed way of commuting, appealing to individuals who prefer an alternative to traditional cars.
Where can you live in America without a car?
Many European cities have older infrastructure with narrow streets and limited parking availability. Scooters are compact and can navigate through congested traffic more easily, allowing riders to save time and avoid the challenges associated with finding parking spaces. The same can be said for many American cities like Boston, NYC, SF, DC, Philly etc. where congestion pricing will soon be a reality.

Did a vacation in Thailand for 3 months and I totally understand why they drive scooters here. I don't see the scooters catching on unless it's in bigger cities in the USA but for around $5,000 you can get into an entry level motorcycle.

I rode Yamaha Grand Filano as a personal transportation. In developing countries, the scooter is pretty much the best option for personal transportation. In the city where I live (Yogyakarta, Indonesia), public transportation is not well established so you still need something to get around. The scooter is really convenient because it's automatic so it's smooth and easier to control in clogged traffic, has a comfortable seating position, and usually has more luggage capacity compared to a sport bike or traditional moped such as Honda Super Cub.

Thank you for your comment! Believe it or not - the public transportation in America is not well established either. I agree scooters are really comfortable. I can’t wait to rent a scooter next time I travel abroad.

If all the motorcycles in cities like Taipei and Ho Chi Minh were replaced with cars, they could become the worst traffic cities in the world.

We have too many dangerous busy streets in the US compared to the tiny streets and allies of Europe. Riding on a bike in the US is a death wish

3:18 You would be amazed at what people can fit on a single scooter. I've seen a family of 4 on one once. In lots of developing countries people find ways to carry anything on a scooter.

Here in Thailand I've seen "food trucks" that were scooters with trailers attached to the side of them

Walking, running, bicycles, escooters, green open spaces, electric buses and trams are all parts of a good transportation system

I bought a Honda Navi last year and I love it. This looks like a motorcycle but is technically a scooter. I use this for quick trips to the store and I ride it to work twice a week. To be honest it is SAFER to ride this then a bicycle. I have over three thousand miles on my e-bike and I have had way more close calls from cars hitting me then the motorcycle. I watch Dan Dan the fireman's channel for motorcycle safety and I recommend everyone that rides watch it as well.

oohh for once i think i might beg to differ : D barcelona in particular has real issues with scooters/mopeds and has fallen behind cities like paris and even rome when it comes to substituting them with better alternatives such as e-bikes (no, the externalities of e-scooters are not much better) cheers from an ex-bcnese (who improved his quality of life precisely by selling his scooter ; ) )

You know, I’m not familiar with e bikes but I do acknowledge that they might be better. Cost less, less emissions, lighter, easier to find parking. I still have fun riding my scooter!

@@cities4ppl i do remember that initial feeling, haha : ) *...lighter/lower wear&tear of infra, easier to find parking/higher transport capacity, lower noise pollution and last but not least way harder to hurt yourself and others with (yt won't let me link to any sources, but i find the injury&death rates of moped users in my old hometown terrifying 😬)

E-bikes are better than scooters, but here in the States there is next to ZERO safe bicycle infrastructure. I sometimes ride my bicycle to work, the speed limit is 55 mph, 88 kph with just a painted line between me and the cars. It is scary and uncomfortable.

​@@1981menso i agree that cars are even worse, or in other words, i think that a moped city is marginally better than a car city; (admittedly partly based on anecdotal evidence after commuting for ~a decade in both Bcn and Stockholm where i live now, but also on the aforementioned statistics compiled by the respective city councils etc) i also reckon that we should try to think 'macro'/on a societal scale and less 'micro'/individually, i e learn from our past mistakes; in short, our goal should imo be to asap undo the damage done the latest ~100 years and aim for ped/bike/transit-cities instead

Scooters are popular in Europe because there's less space/land, and them euro people never gave thought to the need for large parking lots... Just accept the mediocrity of Europe it will make sense immediately. No A/C, no heating, less safety, great advantages of scooters
