The world's most beautiful outboard mechanic (Evangelina), does some repairs on our outboard.
We show you some tricks to get an outboard started and give you some ideas about outboard sizes and electric start options.
Remember, all of your crew should be able to start the outboard for survival situations....
Hope this is helpful (smaller engines are easier to start).

I enjoyed her applying her warrior paint or was that tigress stripes...she's not one to rile my friend so keep her smiling, I pity those officials she went up against that you mentioned. Now I'm a happy witness to her putting that dinghy with the mast together, or at least come to the conclusion that it was a lot of extra crap that was too much for too little and now her expertise of mechanics....and beauty...lucky guy.

I see many Tohatsu (Nissan) outboards out in South East Asia and South America, pretty popular they even make a small Diesel one, pretty rare in Australia though, on Suzuki I heard Plukky (Sailing into Freedom) say once he dropped a Suzuki 2 stroke into the sea, swam down and got it back up, tipped all the sea water out of the carbs and it went again straight away, unkillable apparently he said yeah 2 stokes all the way for sea duty, they are stopping production of 2 strokes now around the world so if you can find one somewhere it might be a good time to invest.

You can get them fairly easily in Latam. But I agree, definitely more robust but heavier on fuel. We are all made to feel guilty despite all the plastic being churned out. Thanks for commenting

@@carryonsailing No worries, yeah the EFI 4 strokes coming out now are a lot more efficient but I wonder about their reliability and fixability

Hi James. So I also have a Honda four stroke. I can't begin to tell you how many outboards I have owned in 60 years but the Honda 20 has proved particularly annoying. I've felt like throwing it overboard at times however I discovered that the problem is not the engine it's the fuel additives such as10% ethanol. You don't tend to get the problem on bigger engines like a 150 or 250 hp because the carburetors are so much bigger or fuel injected. Two stroke engines which have oil added to the fuel don't tend to suffer either. The issue is that in a small engine like the Honda 20 four stroke you have a small aspirated carburetor. In a small four stroke engine with a small carburetor and no oil added the ethanol evaporates leaving a gummy, sticky mess in the carburetor. Other than taking the carburetor apart (not my forte) the best preventative measures are; 1. to disconnect the fuel hose and run the engine dry (out of fuel) every time you are not going to use it for a few days. Good habit to get into. Two weeks you might get away with but after a month in tropical heat that ethanol will have evaporated and all the little springs and bits and pieces may well be gummed up 2. you can get fuel additives to put in "ethanolated" fuel which are specifically designed to combat this carburetor problem and 3. try not to use old fuel. Fuel sitting in a tank in tropical weather degrades quickly. Fair winds and happy Honda!

Thank as always Oliver, it is a point I had not thought about. It an absolute certain, that if I can find one, I will be getting a yamaha 2 stroke for the next boat. I will have a stab at your suggestions, but the old fuel one is tricky when we are well off grid. Hope all is coming along well for you own build.

@@carryonsailing Pleasure to be part of your journey. The problem with fuel in the Caribbean and 3rd World countries is that ethanol is cheaper so they cut it with as much ethanol as they can get away with. Running the little mother dry every time is the best solution.

Thank you James for your great help and information! Just checked the website of Integrel, looks very promising. Is it an idea to make a in dept video of your electric system setup? I am considering a N51, next two other performance multi's. I don't want a genset and as much as possible solar. Want my boat as simple as possible.
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 2 жыл бұрын
You're on the right track. Get integrel, at least 660 ah of lithium and I'd also put a 16k btu aircon for the master cabin at least for at anchor and at night to run off the batteries. You could get another bigger aircon for the whole boat. Depends on budget. Keep everything Dc not Ac if you can

@@carryonsailing Thank you James for answering! Because of you also looking into 48v. From Neel (a dealer of Neel precisely) there is not so much cooperation towards a more electrified N51 so I have to figure it out by myself and more importantly, with your informative videos. Found the fully electrified N51 of Wolf Boss. Have a great day from The Netherlands and hope to meet in the future..!
