How can he be convicted with statute of limitations the way it is? What are the options for victims when their recovery is on going and it takes them 16+ years to get to a stage where they are able to communicate what happened to you?

@@KJ-pi3qu Legislators all over the country are raising the statutory period and there are things that can "toll" the statute to pause it while victims/survivors recover. What often happens is that the offender keeps on offending and subsequent victims and survivors report and when they do all the rest come out even though their statutes may have run. This happened in the Larry Nasser case and Cosby and several others. Generally if a client reports and goes public, we will get calls from many others whose right to sue may have expired but they are willing to testify and juries are impressed by this. Also, in most state the statutes don't begin to run on victims until they are 18. The system isn't perfect but we're working to change it.

@Sarah Not cool to hold the victim responsible for their abuse just because it happened in multiple relationships. I don't know the backstory, but this repeat pattern happens more often with people who had some kind of childhood abuse because it's been hardwired into them that certain behaviors are normal, which makes it harder to see the red flags. Even without childhood abuse, women in our society have been raised to think they should be compliant and the nurturer in relationships. Also, abusers often have a kind of radar for people who have already been "primed" for abuse and will seek them out, and they're on their best behavior in the beginning of course. To the OP, I'm glad to hear you've broken free of that pattern! I don't know if we ever fully "recover", like as if it never happened, but you've clearly come a long way! I remember watching horror movies when I was younger, and when the protagonist prevails at the end, I remember thinking "Great, but what now? How do you come back from that and just go about a normal life?" And that's me, now. You don't "come back" to some state of innocence, you're never the same. And I've learned that that is okay, I can live with that. It takes work and insight and time(and therapy), but it's not so much about undoing the damage as it is healing and growing from it. In many ways I'm stronger, wiser, and more compassionate because of my experience. Which is not to say in any way that it was a positive thing, but that I choose now what I take from it. I believe you are on that path as well!
