Thank you for posting this. I have a lot to think about. I'm the gay son of a Southern Baptist minister, who left that church at 21. I'm 60 now. I have zero desire to return to 'church', but your talk gave me hope that there might be a place for me in the universe.

This is why I have such disdain for organized religion. I grew up a Jehovah's Witness but was outed at 21 which turned my life upside down. I was immediately kicked out of my parents house, the religion, which included every friend I ever had from the age of 5 years old. I tried committing suicide several times and ended up trying to drown my sorrow in alcohol and drugs. I'm now 57 and managed to stay away from booze for 7 years. I have no idea where my parents live or even have a phone number for them. It's been over 30 years since they talked to me. All this pain and loss because of imperfect men on a power trip decided to make up ridiculous rules to control everyone else.

I understand this completely. I was a worship minister at one time and had to quit because I came out. It was devastating but it really was a blessing in surprise

Its a phenomon this experience is, almost universal. I grew up in carribbean churches and sexuality is severly punished with beatings, and conversion attempts. The level of this impacted my growth and stunted my development, I swear it messed with me mentally. I was completely blown away seeing the existence of queer people once I went to college and completely crashed and burned balancing both worlds.

I'm so happy and lucky to have grown up without religion. The ignorance and intolerance of society is powerful enough, but religion is on a whole other level. Real morality isn't making innocent children hate themselves for being who they naturally are when it hurts no one.

I worked in a gay bar for years (pre-internet). It was not really surprising the number of religious leaders (pastors, priests, etc.) who would come in there. It was really sad to hear them try to navigate around their religious beliefs as it pertained to their sexuality. In most cases, they would dismiss the gay label and come up with some other euphemism to explain their attraction. I actually did see some of them years later, and they could have made this video.

I love him he felt so genuinely sooo open and good heart. I love the idea for this channel as a queer trans guy who came from a pentacostal family who still believes in Christ so hearing this really affrims that belief :)

To me it is a difference to speak of Spirituality, which is deep conversation between me and the higher being, which I turned to, when the "church" unmistakenly showed me, it was not there for me, when I was going through ten weeks hospital after brain injury. The months and weeks before, there were some families, where they asked the congregation to cook and help clean the houses of families who were expecting. And there was I, needing support not only during the hospital, but also during the times at home. I was partially paralyzed, the pastor always talked about if you can not go then at least call the person in need. I got exactly three visits from friends, real friends, and no calls, visits or support of any kind from the church community . So I see a difference between, what I call true spirituality, and religion, which is the rather preach than do approach from what I experienced. So long story short, I was burnt by the apparent " non caring in times of support need " attitude. If I had one wish free, it would be that I can find a group of likeminded people, who want to explore and live spiritual development. We could be there for each other and help to spread love, community, responsibility for us and the planet we live on.

In a time where anti-gay rhetoric is on the rise socially and politically, I just want to thank you for holding this space. It is helping humanize those of us in the LGBT + community to the rest of the world in really powerful ways, particularly those of us that grew up in the Christian Church. I believe conversations like this move us closer to more love, light and understanding amongst us all. As someone that grew up in the church, this conversation definitely made me feel seen, heard and understood. I have often found myself straddling between two worlds, Mariah Carey's song "Outside" captures this phenomena perfectly if your ever interested in listening, its a great song! Being in a church setting where you don't know if you will be accepted or not is akin to walking on eggshells and is damaging both emotionally and spiritually. I am currently on the path of creating a spiritual faith system for myself that allows me integrate my sexuality, my values, and my spirituality- one that empowers me to be my best and see the best in others. Interesting chat, if in a very different language from mine though not in the way that sounds. I’m a native English speaker. But at no time in my life have I ever been a Christian nor involved in any way with any Christian church. As a 71 year old gay man I’ve certainly been aware of its biases though touched by them only once when an out of state cousin banned me from his family’s gatherings. That hurt their feelings more than it did mine. He’s since relented and apologized. So it’s interesting to hear you discuss pressures and challenges I’ve never faced. Thanks for your open honesty!

You want community? Do some volunteer work that is beneficial to the community or children or animals etc. Want to have discussions? Find a book club, take a foreign language class, develop a hobby you can do with others, learn pottery or some other craft/hobby. There are a million better ways to interact with your community than to get caught up with church people.

The cool pastors were the Quakers who advocated homespun to protest slave cotton & abolishing slavery. There are churches that have been doing this for centuries.

I also was raised in a fundamental baptist church and knew who I was but kept it bottled up inside me until I was 27 thinking I would never be able to be who I wanted to be and love who I wanted to love. I did confide in a staff member at the church, who told me to never tell anyone else but who also love to have "sleep overs" with just the two of us, cuddled up next to each other until we fell asleep.

There are ELCA churches, MCC, and Episcopal churches that need vibrant younger generation ministers like you and those denominations are affirming but lack young church leadership that are millenial & Gen Z.

"Being kind of safe at your church is the same as not being safe at all." OMG so much this! My church was pretty much neutral (the pastor has gay loved ones) but .... let's just say you never know what a guest speaker will say! And gay people who have been in similar environments just won't trust a church that's not specifically affirming. I was once part of a church that never said a word about it ... until I brought my gay best friend, he took to the church like a fish to water and the church pushed conversion therapy on him.

Look for him in Isaiah 41, the remaining descendants of Joseph in the Book of Amos. To explain what YHVH means by ... Isaiah 56:3 No foreigner who becomes a follower of the Lord should say, ‘The Lord will certainly exclude me from his people.’ The eunuch should not say, ‘Look, I am like a dried-up tree.’” 🙏🙏🙏

I think the real watershed movement was when Exodus folded. Many people sunk huge chunks of their lives into "change". What is strange (or maybe not so strange) is that nothing has come forward to take its place. The evangelical church just ignores this. I'm not saying that something should emerge to take its place, but the Bible verses that were quoted is what is left.

Religion arose when people began to be too successful. Being a meaning-based species, we probably always had some kind of comprehensive theory of existence. However, once we started to be too many, humans had no choice but to compete and arraign ourselves into civilizations. Religion became the best means to engender schooling behavior in our species. Like some fish, we came to rely on massed individuals to live. Religion evolved to be the best means of social cohesion for a species that required diversity and extensive division of labor to survive in competition with rival societies. I think that atheists like me, we need to be really mindful that religion was the only social scaffolding that made states and economies possible. Gods do not exist, but as humans we found a way to make mythology a virtual place where we could all meet regardless of class, occupation, gender or age. Religion is a curated delusion that we as societies have learned to use to act more like a super organism. We must understand that religion is one of the most important BIOLOGICAL phenomena that define humanity. Mythology aka religion was an adaptation that must have been pretty fiercely selected for in the last 20-30 thousand years. Today, we can't but witness its continued success. As an example, consider Pizza Gate. This myth arose very quickly. It acquired tens, hundreds, of thousands of adherents in a short period of time. This spontaneous religion promptly dispatched gunmen to rescue non-existent children in a non-existent basement of an unremarkable restaurant. It doesn't matter that the goal of this new myth was ridiculous. What the myth actually accomplished was tremendous. It used the demonized figure of Hillary Clinton to create a great social force to wield against liberalism and progressivism. These are things they all hated as individuals, but the myth gave them all the collective organization to act against it. Myth empowers the collective. As atheists we need to understand that myth might always have the upper hand over reason because myth evolved for speed. Science led us to understand that our brain is prewired for grammar. I think that science has failed us by not helping us understand better the neural circuitry of myth, and it is very important that it catch up, very soon.

Stuff like this is what makes it interesting when I see theists asking gay people, including myself, why we either left the church or in my case left god (because I was never a member of a church other than when I was a kid and couldn't make any decisions for myself lol) just because we're gay. And it's like, nothing about being gay inherently makes people not religious. I'm not religious because I don't believe in god, and of course the anti-LGBTQ rhetoric that's spread across most religions doesn't help, but even if they supported the LGBTQ, that wouldn't change the fact that I don't believe in god. But yeah, gay people don't leave the church, the church shuns gay people and kicks them out. So religious people that ask gay people why they left just don't understand how religion works.

It is written 30 and more years after the apocalyptic cult leader died and there were no contemporary witnesses to the stories and quotes in it. It's handwritten copies of copies of third hand reports of events not even written in the language of the guy it's supposedly about. There's no reason to think it's divine or even special. I do think it should be thrown away.

This is my first time watching, and i like your content, ill subscribe. Your discussion was very interesting, it brought back a graat deal of memories and feels. The thing that really hit home was how many pol our age dont go to church, i don't, abd haven't for years and years and years... Its sad but true.

I am gay since forever and I am a Christian all my life and had my fair share of doing worldly acts like the lgbtq people which I don’t want to be with, doing worldly acts put my life in danger and had my rock bottom experience in which Jesus helped me back to correct the mistakes i committed. I promised Jesus to stay away from doing bad and Satan was really strong to temp me to to back to worldly lifestyle and thank God for always doing things to keep me away from temptation, I experienced Gods miracle since my childhood until now and I promised him to stay single and free from homosexual acts until I die. God blessed me this life and I believe that to all gays this is the burden that we should carry and carry this burden to God. Jesus loves everyone gays, criminals etc all he wants us to do is to accept him as our saviour and to be faithful and trust him, he only hates the homosexual acts and not the homosexual. Those who hates God re those selfish people who only love their self. Had my life and death situation and only Jesus knows everything about me not even my family know what I went through it’s just me and Jesus. So to all homosexual don’t give up on Jesus but to trust him through good and worst time, never turn away from him but instead hold tighter and those hated God please read the bible and pray every day because you can’t just trust and depend on the pastors because many of them are just pretending to believe God but in the end they turn away from him.
