Agadmator, as it turns out, the question of Evans' invention is easier to understand than you might think. You will find a much more general set of regulations that all boats, public and private, are required to have these multiple colored lights for night travel. Usually Red & Green in the front at angles to demonstrate their orientation, and White all around. Having the juxtaposition of these colors makes it easier to differentiate the ship lights from natural phenomenon; and can also help oncoming boats determine in which direction the other boat is traveling. So, you're not looking for a cool old photograph of some object or mechanism. I think his invention was only this basic idea, and its purpose. Much the same way as the Evans Gambit was another great idea.
@trequor
@trequor 3 жыл бұрын
White is normally supposed to be near the centre or the stern. A white strobe is also used at the rear of airplanes as well, with red and green lights on the wingtips. Red indicates the port side (or LH in the case of aircraft) with green indicating starboard (or RH). This allows one to determine the direction of travel of a vessel in poor lighting conditions and at a very long distance.
@hughtube5154
@hughtube5154 3 жыл бұрын
You can also use the lights to determine what type of vessel it is, how big it is, and whether they're having any navigation problems, all of which can potentially save lives.

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/cd/Ship_positionLights.svg/800px-Ship_positionLights.svg.png?1598297919214 That's basically it. Now imagine you are a captain on another boat and want to avoid a collision. (You're not a pirate that is.) White light implies everything is fine. The other ship is moving away from you. Same with green or red light unless it is and stays right in front of you. What if you see green and red at the same time or alternating? Well, you are doomed! Pirates are coming for you. 🤣

For those of you who are curious, I am no ship captain but I think this is what he meant with the lights! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navigation_light It's a tri coloured light system that let's you know which direction another ship is headed in darkness so you can take navigate accordingly. TLDR: If you see white and green, it's the ship's starboard (right) side, white and red is port (left) side. All three colours is head on and just white is aft (back) side.
@waves_under_stars
@waves_under_stars 3 жыл бұрын
Not entirely correct. You can't see all lights at once, and you only see red and green if they are head-on to you. You see red when you see their port (left side), green when you see their starboard (right side), both when you see their front and only white when you see their back Edit: btw i am a skipper

Not a ship captain but I am a coxswain for a college rowing team that practices before sunrise so I am very familiar with that type of lighting! Basically how it works is there is a red light and a green light to show which side of the ship you are on. If you are looking back to front at the ship then the red light will be on your left side (port) and the green part will be facing the right side (starboard) and the white light faces forward. Basically it lets you know which side of the ship you are on and which way it’s moving to avoid collisions at night! Thanks for another great video agadmator, I hope I also gave people fun facts to use at the bar! #quote so you see this :)

Love your analyst of all the games!! The lighting system: Red= Starboard Green=Port and White from the rear. This was also adopted to aircraft years later. The Chronometer is also very interesting with Navigation of ships in the mid 1800s. If you have the time "Longitude" BBC production available on KZfaq, (Michael Gambar,Jeremy Irons) Depicts John Harrison (a Carpenter) who made very accurate clocks., with pendulums. These can not work on a ship. He concluded that the accurate way for ships to navigate the oceans is to have a clock onboard with GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) time . The British Crown set a competition who can solve the Longitude problem will win 50,000 Pounds. The challenge is to make a mechanism (escapement) small, durable and accurate enough as to not be effected by the rolling of the ship. Now we have GPS, which uses TIME from 3 Satellites to pinpoint our position anywhere on Earth. However, there is a Chronometer on every ship even today. They are set in a box or in the counter of the Bridge on pivots so it stays relative 0 degrees to the ship.
