This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

Just seeing how badly outplayed Lichtenhein is in this game is quite stunning. The players in this tournament were mostly all strong masters of the era and Morphy was far beyond them. Even Anderssen, whom I consider the de facto World Champion of his time (not Staunton), looked far below the standard of Morphy. That's saying a lot because Anderssen was one of the great players in his own right.

Last time Morphy ate restaurant food was during his European tour (England and Paris). Disappointed in chess managers and officials, he later ate only food prepared by his mother or other female relatives. But during this I American Chess Congress, the famous hot dog was invented and first stands were open in New York near venue of the hotel Congress took place. He drank Sarsaparilla with hot dogs (name originated as a bad joke "made of dogs' meat"), and still reckless Morphy enjoyed it very much during the day. Morphy never had lunch, only late breakfast and late dinner.

In the position that Lichtenheim resigned in, Agadmator says that if you move the queen to c3, the rook picks up the bishop. But if the bishop is picked up, a forced mate happens when black plays queen to c1. Blocking with either the knight or rook leads to mate in 1.

you can't move the queen when your own king is in check, that's against the rules.

Just an honest interpretation of black's pieces. They are all pawns. But not a single gentleman in black's camp. lol

@@terranloudenback2102 Fischer would definitely have an edge due to his obsessive studying practices. Morphy is just such a beast though because he pretty much showed everyone else how to play chess.

In my games i also play like Paul Morphy. One calm move back and i show my opponent, "u should resign" cause checkmate folllows. And Yes, a couple of moves later checkmate was on the board... but not for the opponent
