This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

I can’t imagine Barnes missed Nxe4-it just seems crazy to me that someone at Barnes’ level could overlook such a tactic. Maybe Barnes saw that Morphy could relieve tension by trading the Queen for Knight+Rook, and thought this would be letting Morphy off too easy? Either way, very strange!

@UCSo6H4NZ9WE1MOjxroQahIw I dont know much about the evan's gambit as an opening but I think if you play Ba5, the bishop would have little influence on the center so I think that is what the opening wants to happen.

After the couple of seconds I thought about the same idea than Barnes with the bishop. It just seems nice, I think it's because it forces your opponent to react to your moves. In comparison, playing the knight doesn't force Morphy to capture it.

Has anyone else noticed that the latest video no longer shows up under the "Home" or "Chess Daily Videos" links? You have to click on "Videos" to see it. The Barnes videos are a nice and entertaining surprise. The book "The Exploits and Triumphs, in Europe, of Paul Morphy, the Chess Champion" by Frederick Milnes Edge does not do justice to these games and to Mr. Barnes' abilities (at least I didn't find that it did). So kudos Agadmator for bringing these games to life.

(@4:00 I'm thinking maybe Barnes saw until this point and feared that Bxf7+, King takes and Rf1+ . Didn't double check with a module and probably it doesn't achieve much, but it's a risky variation, which we know Barnes to have avoided in the past)

I find it absolutely marvellous that each passed pawn of Barnes's exploited the same weakness he would have had if he went for the g2 move - his pawns promote on BLACK squares! There's no way Morphy would have had time to fix deal with the two of them all at once! What beauty are these games!
