I was born in '64. If I was still wrapped in plastic, I'd really appreciate being unwrapped... Not sure that would be my first concern but a concern, nonetheless. 🙂

I purchased this kit new in the 1960's, very decent kit in the day. I built this and entered my 2nd contest and took a first in the 13 and under class. I always liked IMC and built several of their kits, felt they were a notch above the other mainstream brand kits. Life's too short to stare at a unopened kit, build it, that's what they're for.

It is really amazing that so many parts were still on the trees. It’s a shame about the tire damage, but it’s obvious they were not intended to remain sealed for so long. Thanks for sharing.

That was quite the emotional breakthrough for you! Very impressed you did it and thanks for sharing with us! Even better than preserving it sealed for someone else. The experience of opening it can be had by many more now on video.

I started cutting the bottoms off the plastic and leaving the top wrapped 30 yrs ago. No it doesn't make it a sealed kit. But it has preserved the boxes. Occasionally I would remove it all. After a bunch of years sometimes the plastic looks good - sometimes not. But there is a huge difference in box quality between the top wrapped and unwrapped boxes over decades. In the 80s and 90s some boxes got pretty thin. Majorly helps those boxes survive in much better shape. Once in a while I end up pulling off an old top cut plastic. It's gotten dusted up hard and/or maybe shrunk and split and barely there.... I'm still surprised how good some boxes still look even though I expect it more now. Saves them from all the rubbing/scuffing they get when you shuffle up them too. You did it- now you know what they look like in the box factory style!!!............Merry Christmas thanks for sharing

Awesome , the store you talk about was my best to go to after cut a few yards to get me a model when I was a kid. Cut a yard for $0.25 to $0.50. Man that was a long time ago (60 years) 10 years old at the time and model were $ 1.00 or $1.25 I think.

That's great that your opening this vintage kit. I leave the plastic on the box to keep it protected. With a little work the windshield can be repaired or replaced. Other than that it looks perfect. Thanks Matt for sharing the opening of this kit.

They never thought adults would raid the hobby and horde them on a shelf for decades, hence why the tires were just tossed in. They were expecting these to built not stored. Good to see most of the damage is repairable with the Novus system, glass is easy peasy these days to restore with a bit of elbow grease. This is why I never pay ridonkulous prices for sealed kits. Great video Matt.

Matt, Actually, you got kind of lucky that only the glass is affected with the tire burn. All the glass parts appear to be flat, you should be able to replace it with sheet acrylic or acetate like the early Revell Gassers had.

I doubt anyone at IMC gave a thought to someone opening a box up fifty years later to build one of their kits. Most of them would have been bought and built in the first few years. I'm pretty sure they didn't think the different types of materials needed protection from each other. It wasn't until I got on the internet that I started hearing of tires burning the plastic on models. I still wonder if it is a chemical reaction, or if it is heat generated from the black tires that melts the plastic.
@daviddarby6986
@daviddarby6986 8 ай бұрын
it's a chemical reaction between compounds in the tires and the plastic. IMC kits weren't alone. Pretty much every brand of kit from the early 60's have this malady. This is why, when I acquire an older kit, I bag the tires.

Looks to me like somebody shrink-wrapped that kit. Those tires are made from a vinyl compound, which explains the tire burns. Rubber wouldn't have reacted with the plastic. Speaking of tires, those drag slicks are from a pre 1964 AMT Trophy Series kits. To the best of my knowledge, the IMC 48 Kits did not come with drag slicks. Anyway, this one shows up the hazards of buying shrink-wrapped older kits. At least the damage was confined to a few smaller, flat pieces of glass.
@modelcarvideos5829
@modelcarvideos5829 8 ай бұрын
Actually they did come shrink wrapped from IMC. Not many companies did but IMC was one that did. The slicks did also come in the kit. It was a 2n1 kit and the box even mentions the slicks as an option. Thanks for the comment. I did my research on these a while back concerning the wrap.
