Speaking of sleeping, I actually had a dream about Lockstin once. He introduced a new Lockemon: Neo Diglett and it's evolution Magtrio. They were a fire/ground type and lived inside the recently re-activated Cinnabar Volcano.

What I like about like about the English Mineral Badge over the over the Japanese Steel badge is how it plays into the notion of Steel-types being newly discovered, and that Jasmine actually used to be a Rock-type gym leader before her ace Steelix evolved from an Onix.

Was going to say much the same. It plays into the idea that Jasmine's type speciality only recently changed and there hasn't been a lot of time to update the gym's branding. If I recall she doesn't even have any gym trainers when you battle her in the original games.

@@Arohan71: True, although since you have to climb the lighthouse first to meet her, it's arguable that the lighthouse trainers double as her gym trainers... at least mechanically, although the lack of trainers in her actual gym helps add to the narrative that the steel-type is too new for there to be other specialists.

To add on to the mineral badge, Jasmine was a rock specialist before switching to steel in canon, so mineral fits both rock & steel.

It's interesting how Cianwood and Mahoghany are almost like inverses in type-specialties/town names. Ice is a cyan, Fighting is a brick reddish.

I always assumed that Chuck had recently taken over the gym from a water type gym leader, hence the waterfall in the gym. For some reason he could redesign the badge but not change its name. The previous (in-universe) design of the badge could also have been cyan.

That's a really nice headcanon. I'll take it too, thx, lol. He could resist the Water attacks w/ his Poliwrath, and fight back w/ Dynamic Punch, etc. Dojo takeovers sure were popular back in the day, huh? Could've also been a tangential reference to the thing about the previous Saffron Fighting Gym getting taken over by Psychics in gen 1.

Y’know, I just realized. The mineral badge is the same shape as the boulder badge. Perhaps the badge itself is a reference to Brock’s? After all, her signature is steelix, the steel evolution of Brock’s signature onyx.

There's one more mention I like to give Whitney about her Plain Badge. Her design is inspired by baseball players, so her badge could also be a baseball field(specifically the area which is designated by the four plates). A field is also another word for plains.

It makes sense as Japan is as big into baseball as the U.S. and Whitney wasn't the only Pokémon anime character into the sport. Remember Casey and her love for yellow Pokémon with stripes?

Random suggestion, but since we are already analysing the badges, maybe also analyse the type symbols, like why swoshi represent grass with leaves while scavi uses actual grass

Ever since Gen 1, Grass was always represented with a leaf starting with the TCG. Then jump all the way to Pokemon Go, where ever type finally got it's own symbol to be used in the main line games. Grass was once again represented with a leaf with these new designs. Note that the Pokemon Go symbols for types are the same ones used for SwSh. But now fast forward to Pokemon BDSP where the symbols for the types were once again redesigned. This was where Pokemon finally decided to represent the Grass Type with grass finally to probably be more in line with the type's name. This is where SV got the symbols from to use BTW.

In regards to the Japanese name of the Storm Badge, ショック (Shock) can refer not only to the state of psychological shock but to physical shock (also called mechanical shock) as well. As in the sort of acceleration put on your car by a sudden force when you're on a bumpy road. You then use shock absorbers to stabilize the vehicle and lessen that acceleration. The same concept of shock is applicable to how one's body accelerates after the impact of the punch or kick of another. The name definitely doesn't translate well to English, but it sense conceptually. A more appropriate localization might be the Force Badge, maintaining the mechanical physics being referenced but also in regards to the physical force behind Chuck and his Poliwrath's Dynamic/Focus Punch, two high-damage moves.

Since Jasmine used to be a rock type trainer, maybe (at least in English) she just kept the badge name when she changed to steel type. The design would probably work for either type too.

If she used to be a Rock type Gym Leader, that would mean she had to change her badge after the Steel type was discovered, since it is called the Steel Badge in Japanese, which would imply that it used to be the Rock Badge or something like that.

These are the German names of the badges: 1 The Zephyr Badge is called "Flügelorden", so wing badge 2 The Hive Badge is called "Insektenorden", so insect badge and it fits 3 The Plain Badge is called "Basisorden", so base badge (when I was little, Whitney´s Miltank brickwalled me, so I thought the badge is called that cuz you need a sturdy base to advance) 4 The Fog Badge is called "Phantomorden", so phantom badge 5 The Storm Badge is called "Faustorden", so fist badge 6 The Mineral Badge is called "Stahlorden", so steel badge (but after Avatar´s Toph I can accept mineral as a synonym for steel) 7 The Glacier Badge is called "Eisorden", so ice badge 8 The Rise Badge is called "Drachenorden", so dragon badge As always, German is pretty much on the nose with its naming Don´t know if that was useful or interesting to anyone, but I had fun remembering my first run through Johto

All accurate I have one objection though. Are you sure you accept "Mineral" as a equivalent of Steel due to Toph's actions of inventing Metalbending in Avatar? Don't you think that Guru Pathik's words "Even Metal is just a part of the Earth, it just was cleaned and refined a bit." affected you more there? Especially given it is superimposed over Toph's first tries from within the cage.

@@catriamflockentanz I mean probably, but both is fantasy so we don´t have to be suuuper exact with science, otherwise nothing would work out (for instance, water gun would have only 1 PP if the Pokémon is not close to water)

@Gnoggin there's something that I think you may have missed about the Storm Badge. It's not storm as in weather, it's storm as in storming the gates aka engaging the enemy. Hence why it's the fighting type gym badge.

I feel like storm being with fighting is closer to like, how storming someone means charginf at it with force. Like storming the castle. And maybe shock being like putting things into shock, like when you hit things so hard they go into shock or somethin

Spinarak, Ledyba, and Heracross would have been a good gym. Heracross's four times weakness to flying would keep it from being too too op for a second gym. It would probably be easier than Scyther, since Scyther is pretty fast for that point in the game but Heracross is slower

Concept idea: What if each badge gives their owners a specific power related to the badge's design, name and pokemon type. Think the talismans form Jackie Chan's Adventures but not as op. Like the Fog Badge can turn you into a mass of fog, or summon one, and the knuckle badge can either make your punches really powerful or make you able to do multiple punches in quick speed like a jojo stand.

A "Mineral" Badge actually still makes sense since she's said to have previously been a Rock type specialist. Other gyms have also changed types without changing the badge; it happened twice in Gen 2, once in Gen 3, and twice again in Gen 5. Gen 7 doesn't have gyms but still changed specialists

So one thing you missed with the Mineral Badge, Jasmine was originally a Rock Type leader before the discovery of the Steel Type. So, thematically it being the Mineral Badge makes far more sense with this little caveat known.

Maybe, some older mirrors were made of metals like bronze from what I understand. Though it looks more like it's metal that's been refined out of the Boulder Badge, since it's the same shape and rocks often contain metals within them.

Burgh's badge was the insect badge. Viola from Kalos had the bug badge, as well as Katy from Paldea, although I'm reluctant to count the generation 8 onwards gym leaders since as a whole badges are now named the same as the type.

I guess Storm Badge could also be a sneaky reference to Lugia, since Lugia's dex states that it can cause 40-day lasting powerful storms by flapping its wings and Lugia tends to live in the ocean and given the location of the gym's town... Yes I know Lugia isn't a Fighting type but ya never know

Interesting ! In french, most of the name are similar, if not pure translation, such as : Le badge Zéphyr (Zephyr badge) Le badge Plaine (Plain badge) Le badge Brume (Fog badge) Le badge Minéral (Mineral badge) Le badge Glacier (Glacier badge) and finally, Le badge Lever (Rising badge) The meaning may be slightly different, but you get it, we have two different ones though, the bug and fighting ones The hive badge is called "Le badge Essaim" aka, swarm badge which...well, doesn't make much more sense I guess ? The storm badge is called "Le badge Choc" ! Which is literally...Shock badge ? Or Impact badge, which can carry the same water meaning in a way, but seems to suit more the fighting one, after all, when you get punched...you get shocked ! Or it does an impact ! Also looks a lot like Chuck ironically

The Storm badge or "Shock" badge might have to do with dynamic punch being in this gen for the first time! In Japanese versions, its called exploding punch. So it could be the shock of such explosive power.

Who else knew what a zephyr was by the time they got into Pokémon because they recalled Owl referring to the Blustery Day as that in Winnie the Pooh? It can't just be me, can it? There's no way everyone else missed Disney's biggest source of merchandise in its animated canon, right?! Also, gotta love how it only just hit on me that the Plain Badge's name has more than one meaning moments before you explained it. Never thought of it before, but the badge is surprisingly well designed for being so simple!

Maybe a bit of a stretch but getting the Rising Badge from Clair, the Dragon type gym leader could be a nod to the classic Shoryuken move, which translates to "rising dragon fist"

my headcanon is that the Storm badge used to be a water type until that guy just punched everyone into a Fighting-Type. either that or is symbolic of how Fishing Towns have to fight the storms to endure

I saw someone mention badge names in German so get this: badges in French 1. Badge Zéphyr (same as English) 2. Badge Essaim (Swarm Badge) 3. Badge Plaine (plain as in a grass field, it doesn't have the other implications that Plain does in English) 4. Badge Brume (Haze Badge, pretty similar in meaning as Fog Badge tbh) 5. Badge Choc (Hit/Strike/Shock Badge) 6. Badge Minéral (same as English) 7. Badge Glacier (same as English) 8. Badge Lever (similar meaning to Rising Badge, lever -> the act of getting up or rising)
