You mentioned Virbank could be named after Burbank because they’re both industrial, but a stronger connection is that Burbank is called the “Media Capital of the World” because it’s right outside of Hollywood, just like how Virbank is just outside Pokéstar Studios.

Maybe…but that would be a bit off since Unova is based on NYC, not LA. HOWEVER…there is still a connection given how many shows are filmed in NYC, so it’s not too far off.

@@gamemasteranthony2756actually that's only partially correct. Ney York was the primary inspiration yes but not the only inspiration. Game freak took inspiration from all across the US, including California. After all there are no deserts in Ney York lol

I’m pretty sure the Wave Badges colors represent the four difference types of Zones in the ocean as they get darker and darker; the Sunlight(Epipelagic) Zone, Twilight(Mesopelagic) zone, Midnight(Bathypelagic) Zone, and Abyssal(Abyssopelagic) Zone.

This isn't overthinking, most of what is said in these videos is just gamefreak following basic design principles(giving things a theme, referencing historical/mythological things in designs, making sure to stay coherent throughout the entire thing) you could argue some of the things he says sometimes are a reach or unintended side effects but this video was pretty spot on outside of missing some references(virbank having pokestar studios next to it and every citizen being named after someone from california, for example) if you look at any game with a big budget through the same lens you'll be surprised to find how much is just inspiration and referencing

I think the Legend Badge might actually be based on Zekrom and Reshiram: The badge is made up of two layers, a light one and a dark one, which could actually be referencing how both Zekrom and Reshiram were only one Pokemon before. Both gym leaders are also very familiar with both of these dragons, and the gym design is also fully black and white.

I thought it was more based on the town and gym leaders themselves than the type referenced. It’s got a larger dim grey (for the old man with plenty of white Dredan and the past version of the city) behind the more darker grey (for the future city and the darker colored cinnamon roll Iris). Would make more sense if Iris was the leader of Black and Dreden of White, but it does still work. Iris is being influenced by the town (black before white) and Dreden protects this hi tech land even as it leaves him behind (white embraces black).

1:26 It's almost like they're a rotation battle. 4:20 "Basic" also fits because it's "knowing the basics". Knowledge. Library and museum. Now you know the basics once you beat her. (And in B2W2, Cheren's a teacher and near the Trainer School, which also has the elemental monkeys). 12:01 I think the white and black interlocking is also about Unova's dragons. Marlin being after this in B2W2 is almost like saying "The legend continues". Ripples. 12:01 Virbank's like the closest thing to a West Coast city, fitting for it being the "West Coast" of Unova. Burbank, Roxie looks like Kurt Cobain, literal Industrial Metals, her guitarist is named Billy Jo and I'm betting Nicky is named for Stevie Nicks, etc.

One detail about the legend badge that gets unoticed, it resemble 2 different clock pointers, that connects back to everything you said about Opelucid city's theme like Drayden (old/past) and Iris (new/future)

One thing about unova badges compared to other badges.... Is that the badges (at least to me) resemble more military ribbons, with their long thin design. Just vertical instead of horizontal.

I did my very first playthrough of Black not too long ago. I really liked how these badges looked and the first gym was very interesting to see. Can you imagine if the rest of the gyms were similar to the first one?

Cool idea! No clue how that would work though, it makes sense for the first gym since it picks from the starter's types, but after that you can catch more pokemon and the type thing wouldn't work as well

17:20 Bonus meaning for Virbank. A 'cloud bank'. A cloud bank is a large mass or layer of clouds that covers a specific area, often observed as a significant range of clouds approaching or covering the horizon, which usually denotes an impending change in the weather.

Another potential angle for the Basic Badge's name: learning the _basics._ It fits with the book-like design, and, from Norman to Ilima, Normal-type specialists seem to have some or other educational role. You could probably also add Whitney, since she's essentially a super-Lass, and Lasses are almost always depicted as schoolgirls. Larry is still an exception, with his angle being "I have no strong feelings one way or the other".

The Legend badge could be based on the the box legendaries half white(Reshiram), half black(Zekrom) from the same core(the original dragon).

10:06 There _is_ such a thing as cloud seeding though. In the US, it's used for droughts, to reduce the size of hailstones in thunderstorms and to reduce fog at airports. It's also used at ski resorts and hydro plants (although one plant in Oregon had to stop as it was giving the locals too much rain)

The 4th oceanic zone is the abyssal zone which probably links Himalau City to the Abyssal Ruins which are underwater

About Clay’s badge, the specific way the parts are positioned against each other has it looking like a fault, which occurs when a large piece of land sort of shifts down and creates this broken line pattern.

I never recognized that the Basic Badge is designed like the spine of a book, that's really cool. Also, there is a reason why Virbank and Humilau don't really look like places in New York, it's because Unova is based on the 5 Boroughs of New York City and important surrounding areas which often includes New Jersey. This is important because Virbank is based on Jersey City and Humilau is based on Long Island, at the very least based on location and such.

You mentioned Icarus but didn't make the connection with flying to high to the sun causes wax to melt, just like snow on a mountain top melts into icicles and eventually feeds streems and rivers. It's a great transition from the previous gym. The legends badge looks like a lance or a stylized sword and shield (Gen 8 foreshadowing.)

I take the legend badge to be kind of a stylized overlaying of the two legends hands. Zekrom and Reshiram both have kind of paddle looking extensions over their hands with reshirams being larger

My own interpretation of Opelucid's name is actually a combination of the opacus cloud and the word, "lucid" which means something is understood, or expressed clearly. Not only is this a combination of two opposites, but I think it works well for the city where you learn so much about the legendaries. You could also justify it's name based on one particular scene. The one where Ghetsis declares N's capture of his dragon and urges people to free their pokemon. Many people of the city have their hearts _clouded_ by doubt, but you, Iris, Drayden, and Alder understand _clearly_ that his words are wrong.

An interesting fact is that the Unova cities in Italian, do not have names of clouds but of Winds, example Openlucid City in Italian is called Boreduopoli (Bora+Duo+Poli: Bora is a cold wind, Duo from two because of the two Gym Leaders and poli is the Italian suffix for cities in general). It would also be interesting to know about the motives or inspirations behind certain Italian names, wouldn't it?

Pronouncing Cilan like Sill-ahn is a choice, considering its canonically pronounced Sile-len in the anime. Admittedly, the former makes more sense.

Yes, the anime also pronounces Delibird as "Deli-Bird" and not as "Delivered but with a b instead of a v". Cilan's name comes from Cilantro. Pronouncing Cilan like Cilantro but without the "tro" is imo reasonable.

@tanandalynch9441 But... That IS correct. Arceus (Ark-ee-us) had its name pronounciation OFFICIALLY changed, because "Arce" is how the British tend to pronounce "Ass".

@@tanandalynch9441 Arceus is both correctly pronounced "Arse-EE-us" and "Ark-EE-us". Both are right. Originally, it was "Arse-EE-us". It was changed to "Ark-EE-us" to avoid controversy over the appropriateness of the name. If one wants to argue one pronunciation as more correct than the other, then "Arse-EE-us" is originally correct and "Ark-EE-us" is just a retcon. Instead, it's better to just say, "both are correct because both were and therefore are canon pronunciations."

The wave badge’s layers also represent the many “layers” (zones) of the ocean. As you get deeper into the sea, less sunlight shines through and the water gets dark until you are in the inky black abyss

I love that this video is so well edited and researched and very educational and reminds me of the good old days when badges were cool and deeply designed yet the one thing that's going to live in my mind rent free and make me smile every time is "they're those really really clouds" 😂 I also love that no one caught that in the bit for Roxie, you said "is also very *sitting* of the city where the poison type gym is". never edit these out, seeing others make the same type of word flubs I do on a regular basis makes me feel so much better about how often I do it

Some trivia about Unova: In spanish, the names of the cities come from different building materials, and its the only time they change the region’s name to be diferent from English: Unova (EN) Teselia (ESP)

I think the Basic badge is also supposed to be a litmus test because shellfish are also extremely sensitive to the acidity and alkalinity(baseness) of the water they live in. It would relate back to normal types because it is about finding how close a liquid is to neutral

the one thing I will say is that what I notice nobody mentions about the aesthetic of the Unova badges is that they're very obviously Art Deco inspired, which was very popular in New York specifically, which I just thought was really neat. Post-Modernist faux stained glass looks and all that jazz too

In the Legend Badge I see a dragon sort of coiled around the red circle. Like its main body is the lighter part, the darker part is a wing, and the triangular shape at the end of the coil is a head. Kind of abstract but I think it's neat.

Lifelong New Yorker here. Humilau City is EXTREMELY based on Fire Island/Jones Beach Island, the barrier beach strips of Long Island. We may not have many palm trees on them, but most of the towns are beach houses with either no or very few roads, and just boardwalks that you walk around on from house to house. And they're one of the nicest surfing scenes on the East coast! Look up Davis Park for an idea of what I'm talking about. Next time, ask a local first before making a giant sweeping generation like "New York has nothing like this" my dude ;)

My favorite detail with the Castelia Gym is it being a Bug type AND set within the city that's based on New York City (The Big Apple). 🍎🐛 Not to mention The MET art museum in NYC being one of the most famous museums in the world, which ties into its theme nicely. The Applin line was a few generations late for Burgh, but we'll have to see if it joins his team for a future remake/sequel. 👀 I love Unova, and learning about all the concepts/lore squeezed into every game. Thanks for the fun, detailed deep dives as always, Lockstin!

I always thought the Jet Badge looked like a bird's wing and its talons! Skyla doesn't have many taloned Pokemon the first time you fight her, with only Unfeazant having the signature talons. BUT! In B2W2, Unfeazant is swapped out for Skarmory, AND in the World Tournament she has Unfeazant, Archeops, Braviary and Mandibuzz. Also, you may have been onto something with the mistral. In Castelia city however is likely the BIGGEST teaser for Gen 6. In Black and White, there are some tourists visting Castelia, which is reminiscent of NYC. There's a few of them, with one namely being german, AND ALL THE OTHERS SPEAKING FRENCH.

Shiny Haxorus has similar colors to the Legend badge. It can probably reference the unified form Legendary dragon as well.

Now that's interesting. A basic book that's a mix of Scarlet and Violet colors, whose cover we can't see. Outlined in gold, and yet important enough to be the Gym Badge. Gen 9 foreshadowing confirmed?

The Basic Badge's design makes total sense resembling a book given that the Nacrene Gym is a library.

I find funny how awfully convenient is that Lenora, the gym leader with a controversy during the Black and White games decided to "retire" for the black 2 and white 2 and that the new gym leader that they added is just "tanned"and not actually black just in case another controversy ended up happening. Also, the badge for the last gym kinda looks like a Spartan helmet. And it has black and white colors. Probably related to the name of the games and the two dragon type legendaries.

I highly doubt the "controversy" had anything to do with it. BW2 starts you in a different area with the BW starting area being post-game exclusive. Obviously, the Striaton and Nacrene gyms would be the ones replaced.

I always found it weird that Drayden is the gym leader in Black and Iris is the gym leader in White. Wouldn't it make more sense if it was the other way around? Have the old guy with white hair live in the old rustic city in White version and have the young girl with dark hair live in the new futuristic city in Black version.

Well, when you look at the way they dressed, such as Drayden, where he's like a business man, willing to put in the work of today's day and age. Where as Iris not only dressing casually, but is too laid back and wanders around here and there. Even more so in the anime, where she's more depicted as a black female Tarzan, what with hanging out in the wilderness and climbing trees. More in line of how people of the old days would be like, with old ways of not wanting to stick to just being in one place all day.

The four white parts on Roxie's badge could also be seen as the four tuning pegs on the headstock of her bass. But I doubt that was intentional lol
