How do you gain confidence when you ride? Any tips on how to get comfortable/used to a horse with a big trot/stride???

@Abby Andrews a horse should have at least 1 acre of grazing to itself so a 7 acre field can hold roughly 6-8 horses spaciously

I am a hunter/jumper and I am a little confused about the flying lead change part. I kind of thought that everybody just does those pretty simply, and they aren't difficult so I guess if anybody could clear me up on why those aren't until upper levels for eventing and dressage (disciplines I am looking to convert to), then I'd appreciate the clarification.

Sorry if this is too late, but flying lead changes are seen as difficult because the horse has to switch their lead midstride. It's seems like a quick movement that happens in the air in a really limited amount of time. Because of this, a horse often struggles with this compared to a simple lead change, where they have time to set themselves up well.

Victoria Maxwell I understand. Perhaps I've just been spoiled with horses that have been thoroughly skilled to execute flying changes since my discipline does demand it. Thanks for the reply! :)

KayleyEliza event horses will swap their leads, but it's not a priority if they do a late back change. The key with an event horse is about rhythm, pace and rideability.. For hunters, you are being judged on nailing those leads. I suggest to my hunter riders to work on lots of trot/canter circles in both directions. Leads are about balance. Very often, like humans, horses have a preferred side. We need to make sure the horse has balance and understand collection--I see far too many riders chasing a horse in the canter for a lead--wrong. Rushing a horse creates flatness, and that will create an unbalanced horse/horse on the forehand. Won't get the lead. Try a placement pole across the diagonal or on the flat line (EXB). I highly suggest working with a trainer to help you understand leads :)

Although I love the answers they give to questions about horses, why don't people ask normal questions? I was oddly happy when that girl asked about his favorite beer.

Q: how many horses should I have in a 7 acre pasture? :)

+Abby Andrews I would say about 4-5. I guess it depends on the horses and if some parts are wooded.
