This video is brilliant!!! I've been struggling with canter lead right for months on my 5yr old ...tried everything imaginable, watched this video and everything made sense ! Rode him the same night and couldn't believe it worked straight away ! Did lots of trot to canter transitions using this method and was laughing with joy ! People at the yard now think I'm a bit mental but how brill !!! Thank you

This is the best explanation and demonstration of how to pick up the correct lead. I ride a horse that is very "left-handed" and getting the right lead is tricky. I know I haven't been cuing correctly, so I will try this technique the next time I ride. Thanks so much!

My horse will never pick up the right lead unless I use my left rein to tilt head to the outside. This bring right shoulder forward forces correct lead. It’s just harder to do around a right turn. Straight away is easiest. Trying to make it less obvious as we continue to work on it.

Keep the videos coming! Most clips only show demonstrations on a horse so I found it helpful to see what happens with your legs on the ground without the distraction of a horse.

Omg! I love this!! You have just helped me a ton!! My horse only likes to go to the left lead canter and if I lean his shoulders to the right and the hind leg is in the position for take off into the right lead canter, his front legs go into the right lead canter and he takes an extra step with his hinds and goes into the left lead with his hinds and switches his front feet to the left lead, confusing isn't it? Haha, I hope that counter flexion trick will work!! :3

Hi! sorry your asking envention, but my 14.2hh cob always gives bucks when I tap him with the crop for a canter.. if you think about it when a horse bucks you, you are thrown forward, but when you use the crop be already in a leaning forward position (like your 2 point position) so you don't get thrown, so basically the horse will just be bucking air and not you! :) (I can always feel when he's about to buck, and every time I feel it I go into that position) :D Thanks x

The MOST important thing when asking for a lead is to use the correct timing of the “ask” If you ask when the outside front is on the ground and moving back he will trike off on the other lead. This works for both walk and trot.

My horse struggles with flying lead change should I try counter flexion when asking to change leads and see if that helps my horse better understand. Of course first ill ask for canter and go across the diagonal ask for trot then ask for the other lead first, so I'm not rushing her into it. Her old owner told us she's never been able to do a flying lead change so I wonder if having her counter flex instead of bending her to the inside will help.

Can you make a video on teaching OTT TBs on picking up the RIGHT (not correct I mean the direction right like the direction left) just bought a 4yo OTT TB gelding and he can't canter on the RIGHT lead! He can canter on the LEFT lead but on the right he just won't canter on it, I just bought him a week ago so I haven't had any time to train him yet, so can you make a video on that? The problem I have with my horse is that he picks up the right lead beautifully but on the left lead he moves off my leg and picks up the wrong lead, even if I ask him correctly he'll start on the correct lead but as soon as he finds a straight he switches he's leads again.Atleast after I've been cantering him on the lead for a while and I keep taking him back and I ask him again to canter he'll start picking it up but it is understandable because he is still young but he usually gets it after the 3 or 4 try.

I agree with ilovetonto18!!! But the horse I ride has a very slow canter off the bat and I jump 2 6 during my lessons so obviously I need a more forward canter. My trainer is always telling me to use the crop but I'm afraid to because he bucks whenever i do. Like major buck. (I usually flip flop my reigns to get him moving but it doesn't always work). Do u have any tips on how I can survive a buck without being thrown off or just sprung forward? Or any on how I can make sure he doesn't buck?

AHHH! I'm so frustrated! I have been working on this a long time. My boy ALWAYS wants to do a right lead. Even if I can get a left lead, after trying many, MANY times, he won't keep it. The saddle has been fitted, he doesn't have back pain. He'll pick up the lt lead fine on the lunge line. And, yes, I do have a trainer. But we're getting no place fast.

wiselady 425 I know this was a year ago, but it sounds like your horse is weak on the left lead and isn’t physically able to keep it. Building muscle and working on that lead will help! Plus being balanced in the saddle helps as well!

+Olivia Stone also, the horse's canter will naturally *slightly* swing your hips into the direction of the lead he's on. for example if he's on the left lead, you'll feel your hips being slightly swayed to the left.
