In 2016, as part of Formula 1’s transition into the social media age, the Driver of the Day vote was introduced: Formula 1’s answer to MVP in American Football, and Man of the Match in actual football. In the final stint of each race, fans can vote for who they think has driven best that day in a first-past-the-post system, and the results are published soon after race has finished. It has no effect on the Championship, but it is a nice badge of honour for the drivers to have. So, here’s a summary of who’s been voted Driver of the Day, and why.

@@jamesvoneschen6603This is why DOTD voting needs to end a minute or two AFTER the race. The move that really showed Fernando deserved it was literally the last corner on the last lap. To me, before Fernando’s reovertake, Lando deserved it more for being the only person even close to Verstappen.

Its always been a bit weird to me. To me a lot of it wasn't warranted, as he got so many in 2016 even thou Lewis and Rosberg were ahead battling for the championship and that was what mad 2016 championship a very fierce one. Also I see his fans complaining now that he doesn't get DOTD of the day even though he won the race now. But its been like this from the start. The sport and its fans tend to give the winner DOTD

@@san-joshuabarrett There was a lot of F1 hype in the Netherlands after Spain 2016. A lot of Dutch people liked the vote and voted for Max. Added to that the commentator would mention it when the popup came on the screen. The Dutch had so much power over the vote that when Max had a bad race the commentator would say "I think driver X deserves DOTD today" and that driver would win it.

What a job once again Peter. Hands down to you. As some fun facts, the only driver to day to get a DoTD award on his debut is Nyck de Vries, in Italy 2022; and the driver who had to wait the most GP for his first DoTD award is Esteban Ocon, who finally got it in Monaco 2023 after 116 races

In the 2021 Portuguese GP, a large number of fans voted Mazepin for the DOTD, but the results were not shown on the live broadcast after the race. It was only later on that Checo was announced, initially with no percentage figures. This DOTD may have been manipulated.

The reason Max Verstappen got so many DotD in 2016 was that (after his win in Spain) F1 got very popular in the Netherlands and the commenter on the TV coverage always talked about voting for driver of the day as the Dutchies could apparently influence the result of the vote by their number.
@Arsenic71
@Arsenic71 4 ай бұрын
Umm, considering the UK has about 3 times as many people as the Netherlands, your claim is ... dubious at best. That's even disregarding the entire rest of the world.
@TestarossaF110
@TestarossaF110 4 ай бұрын
I've never heard the Dutch broadcasters say or advertise that, but it is probably true a huge amount of dutchies will vote for their countryman but that at most is probably a couple million people, I'm sure there are more English voters or Spanish voters that will vote for their country people.
@Rob2
@Rob2 4 ай бұрын
@@TestarossaF110 During that season Olav Mol mentioned it almost every time. And apparently it worked. Note that out of a viewership of millions, only some 1000 people will vote for something like this. Especially when the voting site is made so tricky (on my computer with the cookie settings I use I never was able to vote). So encourgaging a small group of people to vote will have a lot of influence. A fact that has affected (and also killed) many voluntary voting systems.

0:09 slight bit of pedantry, in american football MVP is not equivalent to driver of the day/man of the match. As league MVP is for a whole season. A closer equivalent is the conference player of the week. Similar to driver of the day AFC and NFC POTW, don't necessarily go to the "best" athlete and usually are more about story than just performance

I have learned a few things from this. 1. If you want to win the world championship you should not win driver of the day at the first race of the season 2. To win DotD you should have a terrible qualifing or a terrible start and then make up for it in the race 3. If you dominate the whole race you can (you 90% of the time will) still lose it to someone who made the race entertaining

He means football. You know that ball game you play with your feet. You must be talking about rugby which is the one you play with your hands

22:10 Really dude? Can someone come up with something new for once about gender identity, or is it always gonna be the exact same joke forever?

Ok, calling George “Osama bin Laden boy” out of the blue for the crash he had in Singapore 2023 (a blunder he can only learn from) is not only very disrespectful, but completely irrelevant to the qualities of his driving and his character and you know that. I know that it was mainly used as a joke, but the way it was mentioned in the video, I didn’t take it that way and I implore you to be careful about who you compare him to. As far as I know, George was, is and will not be anything like a shady person as Osama.
