You're so right champ ... most have been teaching it all wrong for a looooong time ... but also coaches are not teaching people to keep hands LOW at setup to free that lower body more up and get totally tension free. I noticed how low you are so that club shaft at setup has a good degree of angle from ur arms to shaft (sitting much like ur body is = a little V-shape) ... arms straight-ish down and club head way in front cause hands so low. This is massively important for both that wrist move as it is for hips and knees to be "activated" effortless as u make it all look out to be. BEST COACH ever ... totally agree with that ... no matter how good one is .... from ur videos everyone learns and benefits a great deal ;)))))

Great video Clay. The whole wrist and hands movement is the one thing that I am inconsistent with. Sometimes I hit great shots when it clicks and on other occasions I get sliced shots. This video breaks down the movement. Thanks a lot 👏🏽👍🏽

Hi Clay, thx for all the great content you put out!! as a beginner golfer, should I start with half swings, be sure to ace them first and then progress slowly to 3/4 and full? Or should I practice full swings from the get go? Cheers!

Unfortunately one of my early instructors told me to swing my right hand "like a tennis racket," but I don't think he played tennis because you twist your right wrist forward in tennis to give it top spin. That's not what you want to do in golf! It messed me up for a long time. I've been able to correct it though thanks to these lessons. Thanks Clay!

You want to do the smother hooks in practice then ease off of it to get nicely compressed draws. Play well!

Would we want to do this with driver as well since technically we’re trying to hit up on the ball with no forward shaft lean?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, there won't be a lot of shaft lean because of the ball position with the driver.

4:54 "I promise you you can't overdo this." Dude, you haven't seen me go at it yet. When I started topspeedgolf, I was fighting a slice for years. Now I sometimes can't hit a fade and hook about 1 of every 4.

You can't open too much and swing to the right too much. If you're not doing both of those then you can over-do the other one.
@Concordeagle
@Concordeagle 4 жыл бұрын
I tried it and can see more shaft lean at impact, but ball flight is hard left or push hook. How do you draw the ball this way? Seems like club face is completely shut at impact.
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 4 жыл бұрын
You're either over-doing it or you need more shaft lean. I would take a look on video to see what's going on.

I never really understood or bought into a lot of hands forward at impact. One reason is; using the club's bounce as designed is best for most players. Avoiding the leading edge digging in will benefit most of your audience, Clay. Focusing on simply laying the right (back) wrist back is enough intention to avoid an early release and the weak, non-compressed strikes caused by the club head ahead of the hands at impact. The wrist action in this video is not the wrist action of the GOATs if you consider Hogan, Snead, Nelson and Wright as the GOATs. If you simply hit what Elkington calls the "non-negotiable line of compression" which will have the shaft exactly perpendicular to the ground at impact with your right (back) hand slightly cupped and your left (front) hand slightly bowed, with ball placement about left nipple or slightly forward of that, which causes those hand positions automatically, all is good. If you end up with one or two degrees of forward shaft lean, no harm no foul. Impact is solid, you are using the iron with the bounce it was designed with, and the leading edge digging in is eliminated. The extreme hooding of the club face on the way back is evidence of the golf community copying the "modern" tennis forehand; specifically the Rick Macci "pat the dog" backswing first introduced by the great Vic Braden back in the tennis boom days. Again, it's not the backswing action of the GOATs. To me, it is a death move because of the cause and effect it has upstream. The juggernaut PING certainly is banking on this extreme hands forward position because of the extreme amount of bounce built in to their irons. Twelve or thirteen degrees of bounce on a PING pitching wedge is begging you do throw the hands way forward to reduce the bounce felt at impact. Just my opinion of course, but I value simplicity very much.

Why would you not keep the club face closed on backswing instead of closing the face in the downswing?
@TopSpeedGolf
@TopSpeedGolf 3 жыл бұрын
You can do that but you have to keep it that way in the start of the downswing.

Robin, our Director of Instruction, does private lessons in the Orlando, FL area. If interested then follow this link: topspeedgolf.com/in-person-lessons-with-robin-rosado/. Play well! Mate I know what ur saying but you'll get there! If U combine this video I will link with what Clay is saying it might help...I certainly found it very helpful as it gives a really good way of taking the feeling of that shape into your actual shots: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qbF3mZSGtrzJY2w.html Another technique (or feeling) that I find helps to achieve it, is to think of covering the ball with your right hand if that makes sense. (i.e that your right palm is pointing downwards at the ball at impact) This will give you forward shaft lean. You will find that as you start to do this (whilst still swinging the way you are used to) that the club face will now be open at impact. The next step is then to clear your left side (by pulling backwards with the left hip) until the club face is square. Then - boom before U know it U will find yourself in the position that we all see in the video slow motions. Take some videos and use the next video I link to make some comparisons: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hNJkibCZvMeXgIU.html (This is one of Clays best ever!) Practice, practise and it will start to feel normal. I remember being so scared I could never learn to read. Then one word at a time you start to get it and then by the time U know how to do it, it becomes second nature and is impossible to 'unlearn'. Good luck bro!

Your gonna have to do a lot of non-dominant hand only swings and slowly incorporate the dominant hand while doing the drills in slow motion. Watch some Eric Cogorno or Athletic Motion wrist focused videos to get even more detail on the proper positions. They are amazing teachers, maybe even better than Clay if you want real factual numbers. Eric Cogorno also has some guest teachers on his channel every once in a while which teach different methods/drills which might click for you. Another good thing to watch is the team Clay diverged from Rotaryswing Golf, they have full live lessons on their channel where they go over drills in slow motion involving the body and arm positions. I am currently teaching one of my close friends (I played in college) and it's taken a full summer of 2-3x per week hitting short shots to get his swing looking decent and his dispersion much tighter with wedges/low irons but we still have to move into long irons and woods where faster swings/longer clubs can really throw things off timing wise. So don't quit even though it may take a few months or even a couple years.
