Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, [world-renowned Israeli virologist who researched and developed Sambucol] and is president of Razei Bar [the company that manufactures Sambucol], first tested her research on patients in the Southern Israel flu epidemic of 1992/3. The results were extremely encouraging.
“Within 24 hours, 20% of those patients taking Sambucol had dramatic improvements in symptoms like fever, muscle aches and pains and coughing. By the second day, 73% were improved and by day three, 90%. In the untreated group, only 16% felt better after two days. The majority of that group took almost a week to begin feeling better.”
A 2001 study published in the journal, European Cytokine Network, focused on how elderberries engage proinflammatory cytokines in a healthy immune system.

About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

I simmer the berries in water to make a type of cough syrup. It's better than Zicam to stop a cold in it's tracks. Also, I make pie filling from them and make an old Norwegian pastry from them. I dehydrate a LOT of berries for future use. They have to be cooked to use them. Not sure about the tame ones, but the wild ones do. Or you'll get a stomach upset from them if eaten "raw".

Get to a boil in the Instapot, then I steep it overnight, strain, add honey.....and then I give it an extra KICK with some essential oils of lemongrass, lemon, clove and cinnamon. Last weekend, I took a couple of girls on a random hike. All three of us are trained herbalists, so we're always on the look out for plants. The trail we were on was filled with elders, but were too deep in the thick brush, except for one, but the berries were too high. I put one of the girls on my shoulder and lifted her up we came home with enough Elderberries for all three of us. I made syrup the following day. While watching this video, it occured to me to add elderberry syrup to the kombucha I bottled last weekend sitting in my kitchen. You're the best

I used to get the flu as a child every year and it would always last at least a month and my parents always gave me the main stream meds but once I moved out on my own someone told me that the medication I was taking could be the cause of my prolonged sickness. They told me about elderberries and umka something found at a more natural store. I made the switch only out of desperation to not be sick for a full month. And now I rarely get sick or the flu but when I do (recently got one for the first time in 3 years) it only lasted for a few days!

I remember as a child taking walks with my grandfather into a wooded area to gather elderberries. Once we got our supply back home, Grandma would clean, put into a sieve with a large wooden ball attached, and wind and wind to separate berry, etc. I loved her elderberry pie, and jams. I have often wondered why i never see the plant, or ever hear of people picking them... So many of these little gathering trips became a thing of the past because i do not even remember how to tell if the plant is safe or not., or where to find... I smile when i see these articles, because maybe one day we will be picking elderberries again,,,

Oh, my gosh! This popped up randomly, and I'm so glad. Google couldn't have been eavesdropping, because I did not say "elderberry" out loud. I did put some elderberry jam on my biscuit, though. Maybe my phone camera caught me doing it.🙂 Anyhow, I bought a few cuttings from Riverhills at an OEFFA conference in Ohio several years ago, and now I have 70 plants! I don't think I provided enough water to the planting area last summer, though, so I need to call for some advice, but this information was so valuable. I had no idea I was supposed to cut them back to the ground, and this is a perfect time to do it here. I'm retiring from a desk job this year, so I will be able to devote more time to my amateur farming. I just subscribed to your channel. Thank you!

A KZfaqr called "Amazing Polly" (investigative journalist) did an excellent video about this sometime in 2019. This is a serious loss of privacy. They say it is strictly for marketing purposes, but I no longer believe that's the only reason. OK, that's all. @@minihaha3940 Hi Doloris, I would be happy to send you some just for the shipping cost, but I'm not sure how to exchange addresses. I don't want to post my address publicly. You might be happiest ordering them directly from www.riverhillsharvest.com. The owner, Terry, is the guest speaker in this video. That's how I got started. That way, you will know exactly what type you are getting. My plant varieties are all mixed up in my field, so I've lost track. Again, if we can figure out how to do so, I'd be happy to send you some. I'm in Ohio. I just pruned mine back today, and made the cuttings as described. I pushed most of them into the ground. The extra ones are in glass jars of water on south-facing windowsills, so I'll see what happens. I had stuck some randomly in my raised bed garden two years ago right out of the packages Terry sent, thinking I'd move them as soon as I could to a permanent location. I cut them way back the next spring thinking I'd have time to move them, but I didn't. They took off!!! They grew above my head in just that one season and produced lots of berries. I had good duck-bedding mulch and goat manure compost in that raised bed, which probably is why they did so well. Last year I moved them to another field, and they didn't do much, so I'm hoping that the pruning I did today, along with applying more compost and water, will pay off this year. Let me know what you decide to do.

I have the American variety in my garden, too, and I cut them down to about 4 feet every spring. They grow back to 12 and more feet within weeks, lol. However, I only do this to control their spread, since they act much like a weed and are extremely aggressive and invasive. In Europe, we let them grow along meadows and country streets, and nobody ever trims them. Nonetheless, they bear fruit and do great every year! A friend of mine here wanted to start an elderberry farm in MO, and he learned the hard way that the deer love these shrubs. He would have had to fence everything in to make it deer safe, they literally ate hundreds of his little elderberry plants! The two I have were the last ones which he had not planted, and I got the two little pots from him! They turned into little monster bushes, and the birds get the entire crop!

I was a kid in Nevada, my dad was a Forest Ranger and my mom canned a lot of food. In the summer we picked choke cherries and elderberries for jelly, syrup, and jam. My dad loved elderberry pie. My sister and I spent hours cleaning elderberries. They are easy to pick in big clusters but they are hard to clean but, it is worth it. I am 84, in good health and maybe that is the reason? Igunana

To explain more about Elderberry: From one plant the roots go underneath and mew trees would be growing all the places around it. The best way when you have a big yard is to diversify, it is good to plant many fruit trees and anything that is edible but healthy. Also, knowing how big are the trees. Look for ideas in a video “A complete guide to vertical gardening” It would give you ideas for fences and utilization of the resources available.

My neighbour Bess who taught me everything I know about herbal remedies kept her chickens in an enclosure (big enclosure free range really but they had a coop too) with a plum tree and an elderberry tree. Now you said that about coccidiosis, I am going to see if my feral pigeons at my London flat will eat some elderberry with their feed. Thank you. Elderberry is rampant in the Scottish Highlands where I come from, we must have a couple of hundred trees in our woods (we have everything in there as we have a few hundred acres of woodland that was clear cut and we replanted it with literally thousands of indigenous broadleaf trees) we have Pine Martins and badgers and even Scottish Wildcats have been seen in our area. We have made it as close to a natural woodland to see what wildlife comes.

We had a large elderberry tree in the garden, bout 15' high. Birds ate the top berries and we had the lower berries. I would warm up the berries then sieved them, pips being so sharp. I would add the juice to apple pies, the two together compliment the flavours. Berries that fell on the ground would produce a lot of shoots.

Greetings from Cheshire UK, where our towns were built on salt mines causing considerable subsidence. There are spectacular old black and white photos of the buildings being raised on timber when subsidence caused collapse below pavement or below road level. My best tip for using salt is as a natural weedkiller. Great for paths, pavements or dandelions in lawns (unless you want to make dandelion root coffee!). Keep away from living plants, vegetable as it'll kill them too.
