To be fair, it looked like at first he was running off, but then saw everyone else staying put and probably thought he was the one who was mistaken. Groupthink can be very powerful.

It's also possible that he just straight up forgot about the out of thought it was a different inning because the first out was right at the beginning then the next at-bat was pretty long... His out would've either not registered as part of the game or seemed like "ancient history" so to speak

Only partially describes the season. This one at least had a happy ending, with inning ended and no damage, and they even won the game. In most cases this year, disaster followed

Herd mentality is a real thing. If one of those guys starting jogging off they would have followed. The outfield sees the infield staying put and so do they, along with the scoreboard obviously

I've seen players and umpires mistake the pitch count before. I've seen batters walk on ball 3, not walk on ball 4, and even strike out on strike 2. I've seen individual players forget the number of outs. But I've NEVER seen almost an entire team forget the number of outs. Incredible.

Living in the Balmer area for a handful of seasons before Showalter and a handful with him, I agree. I think he may be the smartest manager in baseball, the Mets are **loaded** with player talent, yet the team is lacking in the success department. Showalter deserves a better fate than the one coming soon.

I was at the game, the scoreboard said 1 out before this play. i know this because I wasn't even paying attention for the first out and was really confused when nobody moved after the double play (because I knew there was already 1 out from looking at the scroreboard)

I made that mistake once In little League. Started walking to the dugout after being a runner on 1st cause i thought the inning was over. Thankfully my coach started screaming his head off and I ran back before they could throw me out.

Met fan here. For Nimmo not to know how many outs there were is really strange. He's like the scoreboard keeper on the field. When he gets on base, he'll stand there with a fist in the air representing no outs in the inning. Oh well, no one's perfect and certainly the Mets aren't this year.
