I agree with the Jeff Gordon pick for Hendrick. JG turned Hendrick into a powerhouse, brought on and mentored Jimmie Johnson (this doesn't take away from JJ's achievements), and is still a part of the team today. He was Hendrick's biggest star: he brought a lot of new fans to Nascar and was known outside of Nascar more than most drivers. He also got the fattest paycheck of any Nascar driver, which might say something about his importance.

Not to mention he was mentored in a way by Dale Earnhardt (of all people) in the business side of NASCAR, capitalizing in the rivalry they had big time, and somewhat passing those racing skills over to Johnson once Kenseth brought the Winston system down as a way to keep himself in shape. He could have retired with 7 championships under his belt in 2014 had the sytem been the same throughout

I think for Penske Brad Keselowski or Joey Logano could be argued to be better. Keselowski had 34 wins and Penske's first championship in 2012, and Logano currently has 30 wins and 2 championships. Of them, Keselowski I believe was even more important than Rusty Wallace because he came in, completely revitalized the team, brought them a title, and made them a top-flight team.

Here’s a question. While I LOVE the Jimmie vs Jeff debate, does Larson have ANY chance at unseating them as the best HMS driver? He’s clearly the top-dog at HMS currently, had that dominant 2021, and finished 2nd this past year. 3 seasons in, the worst he’s finished in the point I believe is 9th in 2022, and I don’t see him slowing down anytime soon. If he can rattle off 3-5 wins a season for the next 10 years (assuming he stays at HMS) and can pick up another title or two, I’d imagine he’d have to be in the conversation, right?

I don’t think Larson will come close to Gordon/Johnson debate. I think his 10 wins in ‘21 was going to be his best season he ever has. I think his 3/4 wins in 22 & 23 is what to normally expect him to compete for. But he’s already 31, and I can really only see him competing for another 5-6 years. I think his love of dirt going to have him retire early and be more involved with that area.

Mark Martin also finished runner up to Jimmie Johnson in 2009. So, you're right it took some of the best ever, Earnhardt, Gordon, Stewart and Johnson to keep him from the title. A total of 21 championships among those 4. Denny Hamlin will be in the conversation of best driver never to win a championship if he never gets a title before he retires. as he has 51 wins to Martin's 40, and he's still active. No point in saying anymore in case he wins a title before hanging it up, As for Hendrick, I have to lean toward Jimmie Johnson. 7 titles with FIVE IN A ROW. 'Nuff said.

i agree that gordon was the “greatest” hendrick driver because he has better stats. but for those claiming he is a “better” all time driver? i think thats incorrect and here is why. gordon is great for hendrick because he turned that organization into the top dog as a driver. and was there longer than jimmie. why i think jimmie was better follows with these reasons: jimmie only has worse stats because he was always competing with gordon (and i believe outperformed him most years). johnson has about one year of good racing left after gordon retired and won a championship in that one year. and if they started and even ended the same time, jimmie would easily have better stats. not sure about this but it may even under the winston format. all numbers have context behind them. one could make the knaus carried argument but jimmie simply beat jeff when they were together. so while jimmie isnt the legacy pick for hendrick, he is the talent pick

McDowell clearly for Front Row. They had a couple "fluke" wins with Ragan and Buescher, but they basically built that team around him, and Michael had bounced around from MWR to LFR and maybe other teams? And Love's stepped up their sponsorship with him too, he's a good fit for them, he's criminally underrated and maybe the nicest guy in the sport too.

Kia credit whenever you consider how the point systems changed that if you analyze how Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt won their championships that Jeff Gordon also would’ve won seven championships under that format, and Jimmy Johnson would not have nearly as many that I think it’s really fair to say that Jeff Gordon is the best driver ever from Hendrick
@davemall1
@davemall1 6 ай бұрын
You can't analyze the drivers using different points systems. It's apples and oranges. If I put the shoe on the other foot and applied the Chase format to yesterdays drivers, for the most part they wouldn't have as many championships as the have now. I have actually done that before to prove a point. My results are lost in some KZfaq comment section, but nearly every great driver had fewer championships...not because they are less talented at the Chase format, it was because the old format didn't require them to practically win the last race of the season after going through an elimination format...it was because the rules were different. So just like you cant judge yesterdays drivers by todays rules, you can't apply yesterdays rules to todays drivers. There is no proof that Gordon would have won 7 titles. There is some evidence that Johnson would have done just fine in the old format, because he did, in 2002 he finished 5th and 2003 he finished 2nd...ahead of Gordon. In 2004 I would argue that Jimmie would have won his first championship if not for the Chase format being implemented. Jimmie had the best stats of any driver that year by far, but Kurt Busch won. New rules require new race strategy.

Jeff Gordon worked with several different crew chiefs and continued to win and even won a championship with Robby Loomis. Jimmie Johnson is indeed one of the greats, but I think his lame duck years hurt his legacy. Plus there wouldn't have ever been a JJ at HMS if JG hadn't already been the greatest at HMS.

Chevy was an absolute disaster for the final few years of JJ's career. The first crew chief after Knaus was horrible, but JJ and Cliff Daniels were really starting to work well together. And then covid happened. The no-qualifying rules that gave a massive advantage to drivers at the top after the first couple months of the season. Thirty of the wins that year were by the top 5 drivers.

@@benjaminwitte5184I'm sure that took some toll on him, but there were still a lot of other factors at play. Knaus and Johnson were already kind of getting sick of each other even in 2016. 2017 was getting testy, and 2018 was the nail in the coffin. The killer instinct was definitely still in him though as was shown in the 2019 Roval race. On the final lap, the smart thing to do would have been for him to just be content with the 2nd place finish and advance to the next round. I sat there hoping he'd say "fuck that...I'm going for the win". And he did. If covid hadn't happened in 2020, he would have gotten at least one, if not two wins.

@@Weezy10580 Why was Chevy a disaster? Were you watching the sport then?? In 2018, Chevy had 4 wins. In 2019, Chevy had 7 wins (and 2 of those were at super speedways where anything can happen). Chevy had more cars in the series than any other manufacturer, yet they could come up with 4 wins in 2018. That's a disaster.
