We had a great burger joint here in Charlotte, called Zack's. It went out of business during the damnpanic, because our a$$hole Demo governor was playing God. We lost a world famous chicken joint too; Price's Chicken Coop. I will never forgive these people for what they did to this planet for two years.

Yeah, in Utah there are a lot of burger joints with Greek influence, and Crown Burger always stands out among them. They all serve pastrami burgers, along with the Arctic Circle chain, Peach City in Brigham, and its sister joint KIRT’S in North Ogden. They’re all over at least the northern part of the state for a reason.

Various places I’ve gone in the USA have pretty good diners run by Greek families. Currently I’m in Stuart, Florida and all the diners seem to be run by Greeks, a good fraction by the same family. Rochester, Minnesota seems to have a similar situation. Some towns I’ve visited in Illinois have the same situation, apparently. Of course, Greek immigrants to Ontario probably invented or at least firmly established pineapple on pizza! And I think it was Greeks who created Cincinnati style chili!

Thank you. Came here to say the same thing. It's a stable in North Carolina. And depending on the region of the state the slaw is either red or white. Which adds another layer of uniqueness to it all. And to order one of these it's "a hamburger all the way".

In Memphis, it's common to put a light vinegar slaw on top of our pulled pork sandwiches, so I'm not surprised this is a thing even though I've lived in the South most of my life and have never heard this described as a "classic cheeseburger". And as for Dyer's burgers... the idea that the Health Department would let them use 100-year old beef tallow... well. Is it recycled and heavily filtered? Yes. Is it a myth? Almost certainly. Are the burgers really good regardless? Yes. After a night of partying on Beale, Dyer's and the Arcade are Memphis icons.

The slug burger recipe came to Corinth from Germany....via St. Louis, Missouri. A Corinth businessman, in 1927, was in St. Louis (on a business trip, of course......duhhhhhh) when late one night he and a German fellow snuck into the hotel kitchen to raid for food. The German found all the ingredients to make America's first slug burger. The Corinth man loved it and brought it home with him and started selling them for 5 cents a piece.

Sedalia MO checking in, thanks for recognizing our claim to the Gooberburger! I had my first one as a teenager, I thought it sounded disgusting but a friend convinced me to try it... It is actually really good. The combo of sweet and savory works great. We were disappointed when they closed the Wheel Inn because they claimed it was in the way of a highway extension, but they moved to another location further south in town for a while, and probably failed since they didn't have as much traffic. Miss sitting at the circular bar at the original, glad I got to experience it before they closed...

I still miss Bob Kolglazers Ranch Berger from the Ranch House in Louisville, Kentucky back in the 50’s. They were before fast food restaurants. I also had a roast beef sandwich at a roadside restaurant in Maryland. We were Marines on our way back to North Carolina after a weekend of liberty up in New York. It was like 1961 and we stopped for gas. They had a big thing of beef on a stand and sliced off a bunch and put it on a sesame seed bun like Arbys. Arby’s is a total disappointment compared to that sandwich. It cost .50 cents and I had.60 cents. I had a dime left over and put it in a 10 cent slot machine hoping to win enough to buy another sandwich. I lost but never forgot how great that sandwich was. If I go to heaven I would think that would be the kind of roast beef sandwich they would have there …. Along with the Ranch Burger 😅

regarding in n out, part of the secret to their success is keeping things simple and limiting options. the more burger topping options the more expense, logistical headaches and that in turn means higher prices. In n Out concentrates on making the best burgers around sticking to the Keep It Simple Stupid, [KISS] method as opposed to trying to be everything to everyone. It works. Also, they don't cook it until you order it, everything is served fresh and hot...a totally alien and unthinkable concept to some of their more famous competitors.

Couple notes. The addition of lettuce and tomato on a hamburger is a California invention. The Hamburger Deluxe. And In N Out was there for that. Hawaii's traditional burger resembles the Mississippi Slug Burger with the addition of very finely chopped onions and sometimes even green onions. And while they are being slowly eclipsed by pure beef patties, all who were born there know a place where they can get "local" burgers, and they are preferred.
