Hot dogs are about as American as apple pie. It's not uncommon for different states to offer their unique spins on classic American cuisine, and the hot dog industry is no exception. While some stands and shops take inspiration from other popular local cuisines for their toppings (like adding coleslaw or fish sticks to their classic franks and buns), others insist on layering, excluding, or adding ingredients to ensure their dogs remain a distinct staple to their regional style.

LA street hot dogs have a special place in my heart, every single concert or event I've been to in LA, you bet a street vendor will be waiting outside grilling some tasty dogs, the caramelized onions are the best part!
@Park_Place
@Park_Place 7 күн бұрын
There are two rules of thumb when it comes to street dogs: 1. The less official the stand is, the better the food is. If that sweet old Mexican lady is cooking out of a laundry cart and keeps her ketchup and mustard in rinsed-out Suavitel containers, the dogs are gonna be fire. They'll also be super generous with the portions and give you a sausage wrapped in 4 bacon strips topped with a pound of onion for like $6. 2. The more indistuingishable each ingredient is, the tastier the hot dog will be. You don't want your street dog to look like the photo at Costco food courts. All the ingredients need to mix and make the dog look like garbage in order to maximize the flavor per bite.

I grew up in South Carolina, and as far back as I can remember my parents would make Carolina Dogs. So these are a must for a real Carolina dog, but I will say that the pink wiener is totally optional. It must have a nice chili with no beans, a coleslaw that can be creamy, but must have some vinegar in it, a nice yellow mustard and some chopped sweet Vidalia onions. I love almost all hotdogs, but the Carolina Dog in my opinion, when made right, is absolutely the best. There is also a Carolina burger that I grew up on as well that has the exact same ingredients, but obviously with a Cheeseburger or regular burger and instead of a hotdog. Wendy's actually sold a Carolina Burger for a limited time, and was pretty good, but the coleslaw needed more vinegar.

This is false. Chocolate has never been used in Skyline chili. I'm allergic to it and enjoy eating there. That myth came about when someone posted a copycat recipe in the Cincinnati Enquirer in the 70s-80s claiming to have cracked the code. They thought they discovered chocolate was giving it it's color, but were mistaken. That didn't stop every mother and grandmother from copying it down and putting it in their recipe box. So, now if you eat homemade Cincinnati chili from grandma's "secret recipe" you're really eating a failed copycat recipe from 40-50 years ago. It's why homemade tastes nothing like Skyline.

This is a great story. We ran a Top Dog cart in DFW for years and brought in different hot dogs and buns from around the country. By far, the Chicago style was the most popular followed by a Texas chili dog. We only did catering jobs and were booked solid from Memorial Day through football season. We traveled to many different spots and a few of our favorites were the Skyline, Maxwell Polish, the Sonoran and the Detroit Coney. If you’re ever in Denver, a trip to Biker Jim’s is a treat as is Pink’s in LA. The ripper in NJ is also a great dog but the Italian served at Jimmy Buff’s was too much for us.

I was 8 when I had my first ever coney in Cincinnati. It was cold as hell outside, and I put Tabasco on top of those chili cheese and onions (I hated onions as a kid but this converted me) and I took a bite of my first ever real deal dog and fell in love. Back in the day, there were so many places here in NJ that served "Texas Weiners". Most all of them were owned and operated by Greek immigrants. The thing that made them special was the sauce put on the hot dog and you could even get chili burgers and chili fries as well. The sauce was made up mostly of spices from the Mediterranean region. I have made it at home many times....it is Cincinnati chili made with simmering ground beef with many spices and yes, unsweetened cocoa powder, cinnamon and all spice are indeed in there. So even though you were in NJ eating a Texas weiner, you were eating Cincinnati chili . Incidentally in Cincinnati, they serve it over spaghetti but you can have it all the way with shredded cheddar, sliced onions and all.

I'm from RI, and the "hot wiener" is our style. It's sort of depicted in this video at 10:34, but chefs traditionally load a row of hotdogs onto their arms for saucing. I mean, they're standing right in front of you with a row of buns all the way up their hairy, bare arms moments before serving you. In recent years, they've cut back on this tradition (probably for sanitary reasons), but they still do it a bit. I've heard stories of people getting skeeved out and refusing to eat.

You missed the boat on the New England Hot dogs. We have two kinds, the ordinary one, the one served on a lobster roll like "bun" called a "hot dog roll" with yellow mustard, sweet relish and chopped union with the roll toasted. The other is called a Coney Island hot dog. This is the one you described as "New York System". These first showed up in Fall River, MA, in 1915 at a place callled Geroge's with yellow mustard Greek sauce and and a big topping of finely chopped onions on a regular hot dog bun. In 1920 Nick came up from Philly and opend Nick's Coney Island" on Main street (Rt 138 MA) . For some 58 years, this set the standard for Coney's. n 1948, King Phillip Lunch opened up selling this kind of dog and in 1966 Fa-Neek's Hot Dogs opened on Plymouth Ave. There were several also rans like Tex Barry's, Jerry's and the top dog of the North End, Roger's. Now, all I know of in the South end are Nick's, which has or had a website, Fe-Neeks' and a relatively newcomer, and my favorit, JJ's hot dog which is the typical Coney in this city; yellow mustard, sauce (usually of the owners creation) and finely chopped onions. I had my first hot dog in 1951 at the age of 5 at the Tiverton, RI Lions Club Carnival and it's been a love affair ever since. Nowadays in faFall River you can get coney's in more places than "regular" hot dogs. The best of the regualrs I ever had was at the A&W on Townsend Hill on South Man St which closed in 2003 or 4. Winnesimett on Stafford Rd in Tiverton, RI was one of the last places I know of that sold Foot-long hot dogs, which I first had in 1956 at a diner near where I used to live on Main Rd, RT 138 RI Tiverton RI. When I saw that thing coming in my direction, I was blown away. In the backfround, my uncle John had fed the jukebox and it was playing THE FLYING SAUCER: pT1. I was 10 or 11 and all was right with the world. I guess hot dogs ar the "all's right with the world" food. I'm 78 and just can't see the hubbub over the burger, for me, the hot dog is the All-American fun on a bun

Son of the sunny South here! Growing up in the 1970s, my mammy and pappy taught me that a hotdog ought to have mustard, chili and onions! NO ketchup! Today's Southerons - yes, that is a word - tend to embrace ketchup on their hotdog. Of all the things in our complicated and divisive history, I wish the South had remained firmly in the no ketchup column. Best wishes and a big thank you to our Northern neighbors in New York and Chicago who embrace other, more exotic ingredients, but still remain firmly committed to no ketchup!
