try the freezing method, it's a game changer! Rinse fruit, put in mesh bags in freezer for a day or two. place in colander over a bucket or bowl and let thaw. Half the juice will run out on it's own and the rest you can easily mash out with a potato masher. I did a side by side experiment and got more juice freezing then burning/peeling!

Awesome! Well done Cheryl and Mark. These are incredibly useful. I built one about 10 years ago, but it was for sifting gravel when I lived in Arizona, so it's more heavy duty. Mine is probably the same length but much larger in diameter (2 feet), so it's easier to get the shovel inside. The frame is made out of lumber, but I used casters for the rollers, non-coated steel mesh for the screen, and steel for the flange, rod, and ball bearing mechanism.

Can you make something for gardeners to shred their greens for faster composting with a handcrank? I don't have electricity in my community garden & don't want to use gasoline powered. In the olden days there used to be hand cranked shredder for roots & stuff to shred as feed. I remember as a kid growing up in Germany we helped out with shredding. Wish I could find such a tool.
@itsno1duh
@itsno1duh 2 жыл бұрын
@@MaryJohanna If you have a narrow shovel with the short handle you could do like I do. Stack the pulled weeds or spent plants and then just stand over the pile chopping from above. Gauge the thickness of the stack on how easily the shovel blade gets through to a complete chop. I often do a H2o fermentation compost by packing these cut up greens in a bucket. Sometimes you can add a second amount and turn the mass to sink fresh stuff. Put a cover material on it to block out the smell (like horse manure!) After they change to a duller green and are pretty stinky they can then be piled and layered for the rest they need to break down. I get buckets from my pet loving friends so have quite a few at any time.
@hullbarrett
@hullbarrett 2 жыл бұрын
@@MaryJohanna No, sorry, not off the top of my head. I would have to do some research. It looks like such tools do exist today. Try an internet search for "manual food shredder" or "manual compost shredder." How about a manual food mill? Or a manual reel lawn mower? An electric lawn mower that you can charge the batteries at home? A knife and cutting board? A meat grinder?
@MaryJohanna

@@itsno1duh thanks for your recommendation, I should do the shovel. Right now I use a hedge trimmer looks like scissors if you know what I mean. I am a member of a community garden and we wondered about a manual shredder. I will keep looking for something but try the shovel next. Thank you!

Hey! I'll pay you to make one for me! But only if it's going to cost less than an arm & a leg... Mostly bcuz my arms are almost worthless, so that counts my arms out for trade value! I need one to mix my soil. Bcuz I have Rheumatoid Arthritis in my elbows as well as hands, something as basic as mixing soil is rather difficult for me. And I like to get all science-y with my soil mixes! I thought of getting a small cement mixer, however, the way things are made these days, and prices jumping sky high, well... It just doesn't seem worth it. But something like THIS ! With the option to hold the soil in while it's mixing, then I could remove the outer cover and sift it into soft, fine soil ! Seems like a winner!! Oh, and if I ever need help turning the handle, I could use a belt and hook it up to my old record player to make it turn! You know, just like they did in the Looney Tunes cartoons!! 😆😆😆😆😆 😳 I bet it would work tho. 😳

P.S. We also shred a lot of leaves around here. I mean - A LOT !! So ANYTHING invented which makes that process lighter on my arms, is definitely something I'm interested in!! Currently we use the vacuum option on the leaf blower. Leaf blowers are sooooo heavy for me! And we have 5 old growth Live Oak trees which pump out leaves twice a year. Their leaves are very, very, thick. Which means they take about 3 years to break down - and that's IF they receive continuous moisture. BUT- If they're shredded, they can turn into garden gold in at least half the time!! Oh - and acorns mixed in are the thing that chews up the leaf blower mulching blade! There's NO WAY I'm going to pick out acorns from leaf piles!! So a good, long lasting blade, will definitely be needed. just sayin...

We had a similar rig for cleaning grain on the farm. It was larger and run by an electric motor. The screened drum was slanted and the grain ran in the top end from an auger and out the low end as the drum turned and into an elevator that took it to the bin. It was quit effective at removing weed seeds from the oats which helped keep the oats from heating in the bin from the moisture in the weed seeds.

I got a better idea for you. Do a rolling scoop design where it picks up items from the wheel barrel and then also at the same time on the other end dump them. Then you can create a simple mechanism to drive the whole thing using a small belt to the wheel of the wheel barrel and you can then use the forward momentum to get more done just by pushing the wheel barrel. You can then do a whole plot of land with this trick in a day.

That looks like a chile roaster in Santa Fe, NM. (USA). They took bigger ones that are identical to that and would have flames beneath them and roast green chiles, then bag them up and sell them. You’d take it home, scrap off the charred skin and chop them up and make pickled green chiles, chile peppers or green chile sauce. And the smell in the air. Nothing like it.

This is awesome. I often buy compost in the fall to let it break down over the winter. Some winters are super dry and about half won't be broken down. I could use something like this to sift out what's broken down and recompose the rest.

My grandfather used to make his own sifters. I loved playing with it on our "farm" in Montana. I would like to buy this product. I have a small garden and I use a metal sifter that i have to shake.

Mark, you really need to let people know whether the prices on her website are AUD or USD. Because if its the latter, people might be pretty angry when they receive their credit card statements and find that the $266 item actually cost $384 in Australian currency.

The diameter of the drum needs to be bigger for most gardeners, as Mark struggles to get his shovel in and empty the compost onto the mesh. The base would also need to be enlarged, but would still fit on most standard sized wheelbarrows. For those with a very big garden, the sifter could be further enlarged and improved by adding wheels and extendable legs, so that it can easily be moved around and raised and lowered to meet the height of the receiving container, be it a wheelbarrow, storage bin, or even directly onto your growing beds. The next natural improvement would be to add a v8 engine with nitro injection, and a pair of rally wheels ;-)

I simply use a square 2x4 frame with hardware cloth in the bottom. I have one with 0.5" hardware cloth, and one with 0.25". I use them by propping them on top of an old heavy duty plastic trash can, and shake the material through. This one might be a bit easier on the joints, but it's obviously a lot slower to use and a lot harder to get materials in and out of. It would take quite a while to do the work in the volume I need. I do need to do some repairs on my existing frames, but they've held up for twenty years, and I think for about $30 tops I can get them both into great shape. And along the lines of that V8 engine improvement... I'd love to have one that is free standing, slightly sloped, and has powered shaking. Electric will do--I imagine one could just use an old washing machine motor to agitate it. Shovel stuff in the top, the sifted material drops below, and the big stuff eventually drops off the low end.

Much like the dragon fruit, I use mine to trim dried cannabis buds. I fitted it in a clamshell made from two totes with the handle sticking out. I can catch all the trim and easily collect it to make hashish later. It takes about 10 min to process 300-500 grams. It saves days of hand trimming in the fall. Great product 10/10.

If I made one with a permanent 1/8 inch screen inside would that be ideal for you?
@jeffgorkisch4489
@jeffgorkisch4489 2 жыл бұрын
@@earthkeepinggreen7763 I can see that working great for a lot of operations. I personally only use a 1/2 inch screen anymore. I have such an excess of product every fall that I only focus on the larger/prettier buds. Everything that falls through a 1/2-inch screen is made into bubble hashish (made with ice and water) for use in topicals and edibles.
