I m responsible for critical infrastructure in Minnesota and retail shopping centers for hazmat and disaster recovery. My shop was 5 minutes from the riots and those were already my customers before the riots. During COVID The Mall of America was my responsibility for preventing mold growth in retail stores. Had nothing to do with a cold. 😂 FYI that commercial property wasn't good to begin with. Half pound slugo and your through the wall in 3 swings and don't get me started on a finished building full of drywall 😂😂😂 in 1-3 days your property is uninhabitable become of water. It's a scam for sure. Then you guys come in and fight our estimates. Unless you have good insurance. Then it goes smoothly.

There's nothing particularly iconic about Telegraph in Oakland, but jeeze, you couldn't find breakfast? There's a Noah's Bagel shop just across the street from where this guy's standing. You can't miss it; it's right near the big NEWER Walgreens on the corner, and just beyond Noah's is a Peet's Coffee. A couple blocks south and you'll run into a Jack in the Box on the west side of Telegraph, and just beyond that is a McDonald's on the east side.

@Metal Leo Are there any Californians, who are absolutely angry at how the politics allowed this to happen, who want to change this to restore it to the way it was? Because my only impression is that this is the work of Gov. Gavin Newsom. If it was a law or measure voted for by the people, how come no one said anything about the impact that this, would happen? If this was a law created by the Capitial of Sacramento, by the legislature and passed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, then this is just one of biggest reasons why this guy needs to be removed from office. This would be paramount to something like treason - if you could make a claim that it is. Businesses shut down, people lose their jobs, people move out of California, and the dramatic increase in crime, and etc., are the reasons for a class action lawsuit against the State of California. The whole state is suffering from the politics that allowed this to happen. Therefore who ever has to live with this ( the people who run the cities ), must be extremely angry about this. The property value, land value is going down just by the way every vacant building looks covered with graffiti, vandalism, and other detrimental details. Again, if there is a group of Californians who are angry, who want to change this state, I would submit this video and others that you have made, to them to promote changes in the state law.

Damn, that's ugly and depressing. If you're concerned by this hollowing out of our cities then the you have to ask yourself why this has to be. Sure, you can go back and point to the pandemic and the immediate effect it had on closing everything but it's been over two years since those stupid and destructive rules were ended. The truth is that a large number of cities are getting progressively worse by every measure - particularly here in California. For example, you have an alarmingly high abandonment of commercial space which includes both big office parks and formerly small family run shops. Almost no one is starting new businesses to replace them and you have to ask yourself what is it about the conditions in these cities that discourages people from taking the risk associated with starting a business in these places?

exactly. As you mentioned it, RISK. The risk is too great and costs are higher for startups than in the past. There are plenty of places in the US, I bet even in Oakland, that are much, much less riskier to start up a business. CA taxes are a monster though as are rental prices.

People defending Oakland and pointing out businesses that closed because the owners got old and retired are missing the point. In a healthy economy, and a community where people felt safe, new businesses would move in. Sure, some of those buildings were in rough shape, but several others were very nice commercial spaces. Open businesses in other parts of town do not balance out the blight of the places Leo is highlighting. All of this is tragic for the middle class in these communities.

The COOP was even further north, at Telegraph & ASHBY, and that closed down in the early 80s and BECAME Whole Foods. At that time there was a Rexall right there at College and Bancroft, numerous pharmacies north of campus, and that cute little one near Alta Bates. No UC students went trekking down to 34th freaking Avenue to get a prescription filled. 🤣 Lake Merritt has NEVER been a big hangout for Berkeley students. There are plenty of spots closer to campus -- Lake Anza, for instance, where you can actually go swimming. And they live on one of the most gorgeous, woody campuses in the country, so have never needed to take the 40 bus to any postage-stamp park in Oakland. Nor did they have to live in deep Oakland, either; there's PLENTY of student housing available much, much closer to campus, and there always has been. (As we used to say about the 40, when you see the wig shops, you know you've gone too far.) And dude. There are plenty, plenty, PLENTY of drugs right there near campus; clean drugs, too, so nobody has to venture into Oakland to seek out the sketchy stuff. Hell, we used to get LSD, pure as morning snow, from grad students right there in the Chemistry department. And anyone who couldn't find weed within a two-block radius of campus was too dumb to be attending college there. There was speed and coke too, of course, but the dealers cam to Berkeley, not the other way round. And the trusted suppliers were in San Francisco and rural areas to the north. Whatever drug labs there may have been in Oakland, nobody at UCB trusted nor needed them; everybody there knew somebody THERE.

I like your videos. They keep me up to date. Now I understand why doors are open to immigrants. As for me, I will never immigrate to there. I choose to remain in Africa being chased by angry lions and laughing hyenas daily😐

People need wake up, get angry, forget writing letters and calling your Congressmember, it's a waste of time. Before the pandemic lockdown, we had stores, we had people working in those stores, it was as close to normal as you can get, and then they shut it down for 2 years which was so overkill, when other states open after 6 months or so. You don't see this many closures in other states like Florida and Texas. While I was in lockdown in year two, I was watching the Snapchat and Instagram stories of people living a back to normal life in other states, no lockdowns no masks, people eating at restaurants and going to the clubs. What young people need to do is protest, we got tricked into complying with the lockdown, and we thought after the lockdown everything would still be there, but instead we have seen many cities big and small, lose a alarming number of CRE. And it's become a eyesore for the people who live there with the vandalism and garbage. And I don't know how this death of retail hasn't already crashed the Bay's residential real estate, like what does the realtor even put on the bottom of the paper on Sunday Open House? Beautiful home with new kitchen, convenient to abandoned stores on all the main streets? The housing market should have cratered by now. I have people who see this as a long term problem and they are not renewing rent, and just getting the hell out of the state, going to where they have some semblance of preCovid life where there's stores and places to go, no cabin fever living at home like it's still lockdown. We are basically still in a kind of lockdown if you have no stores near you, the Berkeley theaters are out of business, gas is too expensive to go far, so you're mentally depressed living in a tiny space like the lockdown is still going on. The young people sacrificed too much, their jobs, their savings, their mental health, years lost they'll never get back, all for old Boomers who asked society to lockdown for them so they didn't die. What should have happened is the old Boomers stayed home, they should be retired anyways for those 65-75, so why did young people have to now deal with this aftermath? Now young people are hella pissed, their stores are gone, the places they used to eat are gone, bars are gone, and they're young and there's nowhere to go on the weekends, and they feel like their best young social years are WASTED in the Bay...especially Alameda County which sucked before the Covid19. Now they're hella pissed because the cost of living in the Bay has gone up and what they're paying for each month, they see no benefit, no entertainment, no shopping, it's all ass backwards in Democrat cities. I didn't see a single march of protest by Boomers urging for the lockdowns to end quickly. Theaters went out of business, bowling alley went out of business, stores went out of business, and it looks like Detroit. It's sad to say but I don't think it can be fixed with lootings allowed, no new businesses are going to take a chance, no when they're going to lose money!

This is sad to see and as a person who grew up there the impossibility of Telegraph and Shattuck shutting down would be hard to imagine. When there is no push back about covid restrictions and you think it's less racist that a middle class chinese person was eating bat soup opposed to gain of function research this is what can happen. Not all rioting is outrage some of it is opportunism and there are consequences. Thanks Leo!

I like seeing this. Liberals called me all sorts of unjustified and untrue vile, crap at SDSU. Now, friend, it is your turn. Seeing S.F. rot into oblivion, its streets covered in human waste and used syringes pleases me. Your kind is the racist/false accuser. And now Karma is here!
