One of sigvalds most infamous exploits was that one time when he ravaged his way throughout the bretonian countryside with his army. He brutalized every army sent to stop him and the bretonian Dukes was unable to make sense of his seemingly random actions. Eventually the army of the favored son of the dark prince found it's target:a village who's main trade was the trade of wine making. Sigvald had the entire population put to the sword. The village was burned to the ground and the wine yards up-rooted and the ground salted. When the knights of the local Duke arrived to investigate the carnage they found a single mutilated survivor on the brink of death. The survivor told the knights that the reason for the village's destruction was that Sigvald had acquired some wine that originated from the village and it didn't live up to his refined tastes so he felt that an example needed to be made.

My favorite exploit of Sigvald was when I fought him on the tabletop with my Ogre Kingdom's army, and my Tyrant dodged every attack before beating Sigvald into a handsome gold paste with a trunk of wood. I've lost every other battle I had with Ogres but I'll always remember that one victory fondly.

@@84jesterx Discourse is more cynical than anything, and I'm all for it. She has the right kind of saltiness to pour on the gaping wounds left by GW corporate policy. I consider Bricky more... parody or goofery. I do enjoy the occasional Bricky vid, I just think he's a terrible source for accurate information about 40k lore :P Then again, 40k started as homage/parody, so maybe it shouldn't be taken so seriously or people will think it's a "rip-off" of Dune etc. (which they do, because the setting takes itself more seriously now than it did in the past). There is far too much information to concentrate on in a Luetin09 video for me to get serious work done, I would constantly have to backtrack to things I missed (like when you zone out while reading and gotta re-read a whole page or more).

Well Athurian legend comes from Wales but it was also prominent in Brittany (Bretons are decendant of Britons fleeing the Anglo-Saxons to Gaul). It went many changes and additions in France forming the legend we know of today and was then spread to England by the Normans. If you think about it the English are really the bad guys in the Athurian legend. Makes sense it was more popular with the French.

I always loved the Empire vibe soooo much in WHFB. I love that they are so close to actual Renaissance and a scientific breakthrough, but they are always teetering on the edge with magic being real, superstition being rampant and so on. That period of history where we knew SOME science already (like blackpowder), but chalking up other shit to literal magic and religion is super fascinating for a dark fantasy world.
@NotNewButYork
@NotNewButYork 2 жыл бұрын
They're late Renaissance moving to Baroque, ca. 1550s to 1610s. All their gear, uniforms and units are closer to the Thirty Years War, which ripped the Holy Roman Empire apart in a way that it never recovered from. Flagellants, Pistoliers (which are Reiters essentially), Greatswords (Doppelsoeldner) and so on are typical of the era. All the units look like Landsknechts too, so there's that. In lore Leonardo di Miragliano is already dead and Marienburg (the Netherlands) is already independent. Repeating guns made their first appearance roughly at that time (most famously made by the gunsmith Kalthoff ca. 1630, even though the versions the Empire use are more primitive) As it was a religious war in the beginning (going back to guys named Luther and Huss, who certainly inspired GW and their naming...) there was also plenty of sacking, famine, plague, witch burnings and the like. So the Empire fits somewhere between the Protestant Reformation and the Thirty Years War. Also matches the art, look up Albrecht Duerer's Riders of the Apocalypse, or anything from Hieronymus Bosch for the truly disturbing stuff. Makes sense, as the Thirty Years War was often interpreted as the End Times at the time.

Sigmar never strived to be worshipped as a god either. He literally walked away from the imperial throne and didn't even want an emperor's level of idolization. It was the masses of people who loved and respected him dearly who immortalized and materialized him as a god long after his abandonment of the throne.

Ogres existed back in early Warhammer as well. In WFRP, ogres in the empire were solitary, mercenary types that sometimes wandered in from gods know where and took odd jobs. Ogres weren't playable, but you could run into an ogre inside the empire just fine. Ogres visiting the empire, Kislev and other places adopted the language and culture of that place in a simplified form. They were moderately bright muscle for hire. Ogre armies are like playing with an army of small monsters. Basic ogre infantry got at least three Wounds and high Toughness. An infantry block of ogres could be 5-10 dudes and whack a regiment.

I'd say that the main difference between WHF and 40k is that for all the mud and lack of indoor plumbing WHF it's still a vastly more _hopeful_ setting than its sci-fantasy cousin. Actual progress is possible (and in full swing in the Empire). Human societies are for the most part dynamic and vital (Bretonnia and Cathay are major exceptions only because they're deliberately kept that way by powerful magical beings). Monsters may roam the dark woods but they're pushed back further and further with every year as civilization expands. And the various races and empires often get along quite well...the High Elves happily trade with just about anybody, the Empire and the Dwarves have a strong alliance, even the Tomb Kings are generally content to unlive and let live. There's constant skirmishes but the non-stop apocalyptic warfare you see in 40k just isn't there. Chaos incursions and big Waaghs happen, but they're separated by decades or centuries of relative peace. Compared to 40k, WHF is basically all fluffy unicorns and sunshine.

Kislev haven't really had a stand-alone army, because they have always been a part/subfaction of the Empire and they have gotten plenty of coverage in those army books. So while they did not have their own army-book, you could most definitely make a purely Kislevite army. For several decades you did not see an imperial army without their iconic Knights of the white wolf and their oversized polo clubs. Until very recently, they where not the land of the bears, but the land of the Wolves, as their Primary god Ulric, is the god of wolves, war and winter. The TTRPG had even more lore on Kislev, as they had a couple of adventures set there. Like Kislev Carthay have actually had an army list, back in 2nd edition (together with Nippon), completely with warrior monks, hwacha rocket artillery and dragon cannons, they never had more than a couple of official miniatures released (mostly reused sculpts from Citadels historical Catalog), but one of the White Dwarf writers did kitbash an entire army once, giving us a pretty good look at how an army would have looked. They even got a ship in the Dreadfleet game. The rise of Nagash books also feature some lore on Cathay, as the old Khemri empire dealt with them. The ogre kingdoms are actually located just between the eastern steppes and the Dark lands, in the mountains of Morn. The eastern steppes are actually populated by the real Mongol equivalent, the Hobgoblin tribes, who ride wolves instead of horses, but are otherwise the same.

Oh yeah totally, but I assumed that the unit design etc. was done by CA with GW approval?

@@DiscourseMinis in the first interview with CA they were asked about this and they said that all the work about Cathay concerning background, history, characters and concept art were Made by GW. I think it makes sense considering GW attitude regarding IP 😅

I'm glad you are shining some light on fantasy. I always preferred fantasy over 40k personally. I'm hype about warhammer old world but at the same time I don't feel like taking out a loan to participate, hopefully something changes internally at GW when it does release.

Absolutely loved this... I just hope the KZfaq algorithm ( or Tzeech) favours you.... The pendant in me only wishes you would compare the Empire to 'the Holy Roman Empire' and not germany but other than that top marks... Cannot wait for part 2.

Of course hard times create strong men. My father would break a fully grown wolf completely in half with his bare hands for a pint of beer. A puppy he would break even for a small cup. Haven't seen him in the last 15 years but he's probably breaking puppies somewhere.
