I believe I've read somewhere that Sylvanian peasants were actually happier with Vlad than with his Mad Count predecessor, at least initially. I mean, sure, some young folks disapperaring, monsters roaming the street, a skeleton or two walking in a graveyard - still that somehow beats bureaucracy and ravaging bands of imperial mercenaries.

Discourse: "No one actually lives in a goblin cave..." Me: "Hey!" Discourse: "Except for goblins, of course" Me: "Saved yourself from getting bitten in the shins there!"

The 90% thing in bretonnia is a little bit nicer in the in-depth lore than the quick version. What it usually amounts to is that 90% of the harvest goes into storehouses owned and operated by the local lord from where it is then redistributed among the peasants (minus the feudal cut) to ensure nobody starves and the economy continues to run. In most bretonnian villages it's more like "you only get a say in how 10% of your harvest gets used" which is still unpleasant but at least not cartoonishly evil. Of course, there _are_ plenty of lords who really _are_ that bad.

Sylvanians: Yes, our Lord might be a bloodsucking Vampire, commanding legions of undead. But he is still better than the old Von Drak family before the Von Carsteins!

Oi, you leave Sylvania alone. My old school vampire counts general (2nd edition WFB to 6th Gen), Katerina the Impaler was a kind, benevolent ruler of her people, and only impaled people, condemning them to a horrifyingly painful and slow death when she had no other option. Or just felt like it. Or was board.

Logically, Sylvania shouldn't exist. If surviving as a human there is so impossible (considering you can't even grow enough food to survive the winter, and constantly being besieged by monsters), the vampire lords of the place would very soon run out of livestock. There's only so many negative factors a human population can endure before collapsing. And in the case a human population is able to survive and thrive in the area, they would be so goddamn badass that they could just rebel against the vampire lords and claim their own badass domain for themselves.

I'm positive that Manfred is the singular reason Chaos won. The forces of Order, and the forces of Death and Destruction that joined them against chaos, could have made it through the rest of their mistakes. It was Manfred's betrayal that ended the world ultimately. Such a d-bag.

I must intervene in the name of the sylvanian lords here. The life of a sylvanian peasant is in many ways preferable to that of a bretonian. The bretonian peasant can keep 1/10th of his produce while the rest 9/10th goes to their lordly superiors. that is BARELY called living. And no bretonian peasant will see wine OR the lady :D Hunting is reserved to the nobles owning the forest. Hunting peasants are prosecuted and hanged. In Sylvania, those monetary tributes are way more human then their bretonian counterparts, there is of course the blood tax aswell but its not nearly as devastating and unsustainable as you may think. The bretonian lords are in the end parasitic blood suckers aswell. Then there is the judicial system. While it is *an honor* to have your bretonian overlord visit the village and any young ladies/men they and their entourage may find to their liking, forced recruitment and otherwise (and there are nasty lords as everywhere else, not everybody is a beautiful knight in shining armor) those kind of tribues are absent in sylvania. When there is a raid of beastmen, the bretonian lords may call a hunt but very rarely a thorough one. Those losses are just part of everyday life. The nobles can also do almost as they please without fear of prosecution. In sylvania, every orc, beastman and unsanctioned feeding on the populace from out of control or less civilised vampires are being crushed with utmost brutality and swiftness. The sylvanians live in many ways a better life. While losing a relative to your overlords is hard on everybody, many give themselves willingly to the vampires and many Sylvanian lords even have living servants and soldiers and even standing armies. Yes, the land is dark, swampy, agriculture is difficult and monsters are running about but things could be worse :D at least 2/3rds of the monsters are protecting you relentlessly.

A few other locations I can think of include Araby (slavery a major source of wealth), Tilean/Estialia - constant wars/back stabbery or the border kingdoms (either conscripted into the army of one of the various warlords, or just killed to prevent a different warlord from benefiting from your 'labour'). I think if I did live in the WHFB world I'd probably choose Albion - no ones going to go looking there (assuming that the mist remains and it's several centuries before Belakor got up to his usual tricks).

i remember reading a while ago, where as sylvania and other vamp places were quite dark and swampy, they wernt that bad to live in as a regular pessent. as other than the blood tax, the normal taxes wernt that much, as the vamps didnt need money to pay for fancy foods, (your the food) but even that, there would be like one or two vampers per settlement of sevral hundred of people, so the chance you getting nommed isnt that high, as well as all the creepy monsters are controled by said vampire, they arnt mindless creatures, so they wouldnt really attack you as long as you stay in the towns, as why would the vamps randomly kill their cattle, where as the rest of the empire and bretonia, your settlement would be open from raids from all sorts, even the something as small as a highway man, but in sylvania even the poorest highway man isnt suisicdle enough to try and rob there

I would argue that Mousillon is worse than Sylvania. All the pros and cons of living in Bretonnia, with all the pros and cons of living in Sylvania!

I would consider living next to the Moot as being another reason Sylvania sucks with it full of those lying, stealing, obnoxious little assholes. Truly the worst place to live. Also, if it wasn't for the fact the Moot is so fertile, I don't think the lie that halflings are cannibals would be a lie, with how much they eat.

Sylvania is actually only the second worst place to live in the Old World. The actual worst place is its neighbour, Stirland. Why? Stirlanders drink boiled beer. Boiled beer. The mere thought of it fills me with dread and horror.

Best place to live? Lothern maybe? Humans are allowed to live their (in a special area). It probably has decent plumbing and is very protected.

Kislev? I mean, vampire bad sure, but nonstop war and living with the impending doom of whatever twisted fate you can get hit with if the warriors dont make it already is a hard bargain to sell but then stack on the idea that they live in one of the hardest environments to survive in just makes that so much worse.

Actually, the Chaos Wastes are the North Pole. Norsca is more like Scandinavia. Also Mousillon exists and it's Bretonnia's equivalent of Sylvania so it's even shittier.

I wonder how the hell do Sylvanians actually grow crops and animals... I mean without sunlight there's not much of growth... For anything. And if there's constant famine, then small children would die of starvation (or their parents would first, and then they would die), even if they indulge in some sweet pork.
