Thank you for sharing these stories. In a world where we see too much division and ugliness it's touching to see a community coming together. The compassion, love, shared grief and willingness to help others really touches the heart during a very difficult time. May God bless all of those affected, turn their tears to joy, beauty from ashes and bring them peace during this trial.

Tornado shelters. Invest in a shelter then a 75 inch tv. Diving the speed limit. Put the cell phone down when driving. Kids wear helmets when riding 3 -4 wheelers. Common sense.

We always went in a corner in the basement, under a very stable industrial work table made of thick planks of wood. The table was placed next to the wall from where most tornados would come. I thank my Dad for setting that up for us. My Mom said that the windows should be open even if it rained in, so that the wind could go through. It was long ago but I believe that she told me that houses implode in those storms. She also fought, before buying, for a brick house in case of storm or fire. She wanted to have something left in a crisis. I thank her for those directions because I was often alone with my siblings and had to gather them from wherever they were playing outside. In the night, you can't see any funnel clouds although I tried. On those evenings we just stayed in the basement, relaxed and watched the weather report. My brother has no basement. I can hardly believe it. He must have some type of shelter though. He is a smart guy. Being prepared doesn't always work but we tried. We know the fear for sure. I never slept in those cases. I stayed on alert, the oldest born of 4 kids and 2 tired parents. Am so happy to see all of the helpers. Be proud that you are alive.

Mom told us the exploding house thing too. She was like a tornado watch dog. At the drop of a hat she was throwing open windows, tell us to get into the tub and hunker down, all while cussing saying she would have a tornado shelter at her next house. Thankfully, we were never hit by a tornado, but we had a lot of wet windowsills.

I've heard of the window thing also. It's not really true and can actually make it worse because it allows swift winds inside and that increases the likelihoodof the roof coming off. The theory came about by thinking houses would explode due to the pressure drop that accompanies tornados (which is why your ears pop) and could cause a house to "explode", so opening the windows might prevent that from happening. That theory was never really possible because houses are not a airtight structure to beging with. We now know that the key to keeping a house intact during tornado has to do with the roof. If you can keep the roof on, your home should (in theory) stay somewhat intact. Not undamaged, just relatively intact which leads to be a better outcome for the occupants of the structure. Here where I live in Louisiana all new construction are required to have the roof anchored by Hurricane straps. These anchors are drilled several feet into the ground and are designed to help keep the roof on the structure during hurricanes and depending on how close you live to the coast determines how many straps you need and how deep they need to go. Now when you're dealing with a monster like this tornado was, it's really just luck. Most structure don't stand a chance unless you live in a bank vault or underground.

I'm so relieved that I don't live in a country where anythings like this can happen. I live in Denmark, We literally don't experience any kind of destructive Natural forces like in the US. No Earthquakes, No Tornadoes, the worst storm we have ever experienced was something called the (storm of the century) in 1999 Only happens every 100 years. And it was only considered a category 1 Hurricane. That is it, Of course we get floods but its more of Materiel cost. Nobody dies from them. I feel for you my American friends, Take care.

We had an after work dentist appointment. We almost got home... We took a bus, after waiting a long time.... but under a bridge, just one stop further it was flooded. The bus driver told us to leave the bus, he could not go further. 3 of us held onto each other to have more weight against the winds, we were already soaked from waiting so we walked home through flooded river-like streets and decided that only trees and parts of rooves would present the most danger. Our jackets, under layers of clothing and shoes were so wet and heavy that we could hardly walk. I told the kids, hang on, don't let go. We got home and I was so glad. Katrina got to our area so suddenly. We won't do that again.

That's why I try to leave a couple of windows open during a tornado warning. The vacuum created inside during a tornado makes the walls breath in and out until they explode like a bomb.
@scottfw7169
@scottfw7169 2 жыл бұрын
After a 1979 tornado in Wichita, KS, that was declared the wrong thing to do since open windows allowed winds to come in and pressurize the home interior while outside wind flowing across top of roof created lower pressure, essentially subjecting the roof structure to airplane wing type lift forces, thereby lifting the roof off and allowing increased home interior pressure to push the walls outward.

Are you a scientist or a follower? If your a follower go back & read how the government made a mission of manipulating the weather. Look no further than Bill Gates obsession of doing so. Don't be so confident. Weather is unpredictable, but if it is being manipulated that is treason against the American people. Why is American only seeing these extreme weather events? Where else in the world is this happening?

@@ohsugar5431 Just because you saw the episode of Family Guy where Stewie made a weather control machine with his baby toys doesn't mean it's real, honey. It was just a TV show.

@@ohsugar5431 And just because you're unable to see past your own country doesn't mean other countries don't experience this. Like Peru very recently. But you're right, if it didn't happen in America it didn't happen at all lol
