On the subject of Lauda, He was as arrogant as Enzo, but only if you gave him reason. When a Boeing in his airline went down and killed all aboard, he personally got involved in the investigation and found that a thrust reverser opened mid flight, causing the crash. Boeing said the pilots should've realized it and accounted for it, and that it was pilot error. Lauda tried it in Boeings simulator and found it typically not the case. When Boeing disputed this he said he would take one of his planes and do it himself since it was apparently safe enough by Boeings standards, basically saying if you're wrong, I die, and so be it. Boeing accepted defeat and fixed the problem on all of its aircraft.

Although that bit about the pilot error is true there were investigations of austrian prosecuters into the downing of the airliner an although evidence suggested there wasn´t any knowledge knew about the sketchy maintainace that the aircrafts thrust reserver and it´s error that it gave for and if correctly identified by the maintainance crews would shown that there was a danger (although as you correctly pointed out it was undersestimated of how it would influence the aircraft if it did) but instead let if flew for over a hundred hours up to the accident instead having to ground after 60 or so at the latest by Boeings recommendation. And I am even willing to say that Lauda Air knew they fucked up by playing game by not giving the investigators and prosecutors these maintainance logs they wanted until 10 days after under the threar to get a search warrant. There was even a former Lauda Air maintainance supervisor who said that he recommend to NOT fly with Lauda Air due to the fact that maintainance couldn´t done properly since everyone was in fear that Niki would get upset if one of his aircraft would have been grounded for whatever reason. And don´t get me started of how the families of the deceased were supported or better were completly ignored by Lauda Air until the takeover by AUA (which Niki Lauda did manage by using his political connections).

Immediately after winning the 1976 Monaco F3 race, Bruno Giacomelli was invited to have lunch in a restaurant in Maranello. Upon arrival, Mr Ferrari was sat waiting for him and invited him to sit. After a very nervous lunch, Enzo offered him a seat to replace Regazzoni in the F1 team for 1977. Giacomelli explained that he had already signed an agreement with March to race for them in F2 next year. Enzo offered him his lawyers, and Bruno returned to March and explained the situation. Mosely understood and said they would let him go if he signed for Ferrari. When Bruno returned to Ferrari, Enzo had changed his mind - the offer was now only an F2 seat with a terrible Dino engine. Giacomelli refused. Won races with March in 1977 and broke the record for the most wins in an F2 season in 1978 (8/12, still stands today). He’d make it to F1 with McLaren before linking up with one Carlo Chiti at Alfa Romeo. He would take pole position at the 1980 US Grand Prix East while Ferrari’s reigning champion Jody Scheckter failed to qualify.

Enzo Ferraris egotistical attitude is like a character trait that we love becuase it's funny to watch and is very defining, like Starscreams trechary or K.I.T.T's smug-yet-smart attitude. He also once said that "Aerodynamics are for people who can't build engines."

@@Turbo.RF4It led his team to domination in both sports car and formula racing. Despite this quote, Ferrari was first to use spoilers and sharp separation edges in sports car racing. In F1 Lotus introduced wings first, but Ferrari had been developing their wings longer and arrived with much better construction for the next race, totally dominating the field. Most of claims about "what he was against" are either total bullshit made up by journalists or stuff he told to clients to sell more road cars.

To be fair, Japanese companies didn't really participate in European racing during Enzo's Golden Age. While companies like Mercedes, BMW or Porsche were always present in motorsports (later on Audi too), they never had much to do with Ferrari outside of the competition. Most of the people mentioned in the video were former or would-have-been business partners. Something that doesn't apply to the German manufacturers, because they were never interested in that.

Side story: Fissoré also developed a sister design of the Monteverdi for TVR called the Trident as they also wanted to enter into the opulent GT market. Trident later became an independent company of TVR to produce the car and resulted in a 289 Ford powered GT car that was the fastest British production car (ahead of the AC Cobra) before Aston Martin released the V8 Vantage in the mid 70s. I’m restoring one such example myself, very interesting cars inspired by GT race of the mid 60s by Ferrari, Iso, Lambo etc

the mere existance of ferrari was in part instigated by his overall dick attitude about life. as we all know, he ran alfa squadra corse, or however it was called back then, and was kind of the chief engineer, but one road car engineer was far talented and not only that but also got along nicely with everybody AND THE BOSS. so naturally the boss of alfa romeo kicked the angry italian man amidst his cries for power off of his throne, and named Wifredo Ricart head engineer. he was a spaniard who in the war emigrated back home to spain with many of his colleagues from alfa, and founded pegaso. that explais why pegaso z102s have so much alfa technology, including the alfettas rear de dion suspension and transaxle.

Italian here... 3:40 pretty much everyone that cared for his head had to at least put in a facade of support for Mussolini, but the italian partisans were very much active and using their conctact (don't know how to spell) to deliver better blows and the american generals themseves said that "It brings our troops a great deal of comfort knowing that [the nazis] can't have peace even behind the lines [....] I'd rather have the parisans continue their work than have a whole new division" Not much to say about the rest. Just don't forget Lamborghini was pretty similar in temperament to Enzo and that the "Old Man" as he was called by his employees in Monza often heard him joke about some of the mistakes he made :) Ps The whole situation with ford happened because of the arrogance of the ford representatives and their refusal to stick to what was previously agreed upon (it's a breach of the principle of reliance on the conclusion of the contract (don't know the correct translation so i went with the literal one)... in other words when the discussion has reached a point in wich there can be a reasonable belief the contract will be signed if the other party pulls something out of their ass at the last second hoping to force you to accept a change or retreats from the negotiation you can bring them to court) so Enzo decided to stick it to them and as seen in the film decided to play them

I think Enzo was just put off that Ford wanted to buy into racing and winning. Ford wanted to be exotic and have sales including exotic cars. Enzo just didnt want to sell out and most of all have a big money corp change italian exotic niche car making. In a way, if everything went opposite, Ferrari as a marque would not have been the same...and also we wouldn't have gotten all that great racing with Ford and Porsche in the 60s and 70s. Enzo kept his brands rep and Ford still found ways to make money and branch out. We ultimately got the best case scenario. If I built my brand from the ground up and wanted to exist only to race and create special vehicles...I'd probably act the same way. Its like his baby. I think these movie portrayals are a bit hard on Enzo and probably he may not been as bad as they say. I do think....he had a track record for getting close and bumping shoulders with opposition, with prospects of making deals....then ultimately wanting to protect his baby and backing out, even with contracts written. That would get under anyones skin. And those other marques still went on to build great cars anyway. Enzo proved to them that they couldnt buy into winning on day 1. He made them fight for it on the race track. And thats the whole reason for competition. And that's why all these great marques are all celebrated today, and still going strong. Don't be so hard on Enzo, thank him.

Here is a fun fact for you, Lancia famously made the first production V6 engine in 1950, but what is lesser known is that they won the 1953 Carerra Panamericana, 1954 Mille Miglia and the 1954 Targa Florio with the Lancia D24, powered by a 260hp 3.3L Quad-Cam V6. Fast forward literally one year, in 1955, after running into financial issues Lancia sold their racing team to Ferrari, including some of their engineers like the great Vittorio Jano. This was right around the time when the Dino V6 were conceived, and as a result the Dino engines (there are actually 2 distinct Dino V6s, the common 65° and a rare 60° designed by Jano) actually incorporated many design features and lessons learned from Lancias own V6 engines. In a sense, giving Dino engines to Lancia was payback, since Ferrari went on to win the 1956 F1 Drivers Championship with a car they inherited from Lancias F1 team.

Enzo Ferrari's problems weren't all by his hand, as his wife Laura (as you touched on slightly) also had a hand in causing some of the headaches for him. Now granted, Enzo didn't make it easy for himself. In fact, the problems with his wife stemmed from all of his extramarital affairs, especially the one with Lina Lardi which resulted in the birth of his son Piero in the direct aftermath of the death of Dino. As a result, Laura used this to blackmail her husband to push herself into getting more involved with company matters and make business matters personal in Maranello. In fact, it is her attitude towards business that created the series of events leading to the Great Ferrari Walkout and the spawning of Bizzarrini and ATS. Now Enzo also caused his own problems in all of this with Ford and Lamborghini. That said, once Laura died, Enzo could finally acknowledge Piero as his son without fears of repercussions and the grouchy old man started to tone down his bitter attitude. Excellent video as always Mr Binman, and I can't wait for your next video. Also, if you ever get the opportunity, could you look into some defunct American auto makers?

The best thing Enzo ever produced was the burning desire to absolutely crush him in the thing he loved most.

I know it's probably in your 'to do' pile, but a video on the insanity that was the Group B rally series wouldn't be amiss...and for the audio, just use the engine sounds...

Ferrari should have been the most dominant car maker in most top-level motorsport from the 1950s to the 1980s. But his consent fucking about cost him and damage his company big time. Almost bankrupting the business on more than one occasion.

Yes Enzo upset a lot of people, but if you think about it, without that Lamborghini wouldn't have started making iconic cars like the Miura and Countach, the GT40 or Bizzarrini Strada wouldn't exist either, along with many other cars, so really we have a lot to thank Ferrari for.

The saddest thing is, that the R8 wouldn't exist. The best thing, the Urus wouldn't exist either.

You know, ferrari may no longer make the fastest cars, or have the best racing team in the world, but they are symbolic as an automaker and racing team. Enzo may have been an ass, but he solidified ferrari's place on the world stage. Its something money cant buy.

If the apocryphal story about his quote on car production is true, then at least he did share some information that was useful to the rest of the car industry. He is supposed to have said “Always build one car less than you have orders for,” which is good advice for a lot of today’s supercar/hypercar manufacturers.
