That's a good rule tbf, I'm a HUGE proponent of painting with washes, bases and inks only. I managed to paint 10 orks in an hour and although they're not detailed apart from the teeth and nails they look good on the table. What? The shorts, chest, gloves and cloth are all the exact sand colour? Well thanks to layering washes they have a gradient on them.

"It's an army level game, the individual models don't count." It took me ages to internalize this. I've got a fully painted Sisters army (knocked It out in a little over a week for a tournament). The paintjobs are garbage, but people at my local club kept telling me how great it looked. I didn't realize until one of the guys pointed out that I was the only person there that night who even brought a fully painted army.
@cinifiend
@cinifiend 2 жыл бұрын
Same here. A fully painted army ALWAYS looks better than an army with 1-2 units and a few characters painted well and the rest is 80% grey. The whole is more than the sum of it's parts.

I have cerebral palsy, and saw it as a challenge to learn to paint. It's taken time and effort (hours of frustration too!) to have what I call a "messy style". I get pleasure doing it even though I might not be good at it, but people seem to see it as awesome as they don't think that they could do it. Anyone should just give it a go! There are loads of people on FB sites as well as KZfaq to encourage and help you.

Mainly because I don't have a deadline, I don't play (I don't have who to play with), but also because I to look at them and I feel proud of them..... This is pretty much my ideology, but I've started branching out in the last year or so. I've made my 40k orks my main army. I go all-in as much as I can when working on the boyz. However, I've started cutting corners for speed for my alternate projects. Like I did the Fyreslayer half of Fury of the Deep in about two weeks (which is like light speed compared to my normally glacial pace) by giving a bunch of extra techniques the axe. They aren't up to the standard my orks are, but they still look rock solid on the tabletop in their units with some terrain and an army to fight against. Even a really basic color setup can look respectable several feet away in a gameplay setting.

Here's actually a good tip for painting "artistically" in a bad way: paint half your model green, half purple, then dry brush over another colour on top of both in the dark. You may think I'm joking, but I've got some pretty cool looking Necrons that way.

Something I learned myself and embraced as my own "hack". 1. Black base 2. Layer of color 3. Drybrush or just go lightly over places where hilights would go (just much bigger) 4. Wash Wash will blend dark and light parts together into something that looks the same. Also, dark wash fits everything, since you are getting "comics" look on them

A friend of mine had his 7 year old daughter paint 2 Space Marines recently, using Contrast Paint for the main armor, adding some details on the aquila and the weapons in metallics. One was classic blue, one a lovely bright pink. They both looked pretty good, actually. If a 7 year old can do it, so can you!

I made the mistake of learning to paint from one guy who was a golden daemon winner and another guy who painted so many minis for Reaper that they named minis after him. I put 80 hours into a PanOceana Orc Trooper painting from black primer to white armor. It wasn’t good enough. Like they literally told me they were disappointed in me and felt I could have done better. Since then i started a “good enough “ crusade for my minis. I in fact last year started started a project for all the random Necrons that I collected over the years that I started calling “The Good Enough Battalion” I had to pull myself away from the urge to go back and fix minor mistakes. The whole exercise means I now have 9 stands of scarabs and 34 warriors I can put on the table. Good enough is a godsend mentality. Keep it up!:)

I started painting minis in the early, early '90s, with enamels. Yes, enamels. Having acrylics and videotutorials is like iddqd and idkfa with a paintbrush. You want to churn out armies fast? Go Contrast over a grisaille/zenithal prime, with very dark recesses and very bright extreme highlights. Maybe a couple metallics.

That is an accurate description of my first space marines. I wanted to get all of the base color on one marine with one load of paint on a brush. Back then I could paint 7 marines in an hour, but lost some detail on the helmet face. I painted the details neatly and managed with only 5 paints total. Still adding to that army with the same color scheme and style but I paint more carefully and use a colored primer for the base color. Only added nuln oil and a few more colors.

Love this video.... I paint as a form of relaxation.... But if I otherthink what I'm painting then I am no longer relaxing.... I spray the main colour then pick out some details with a few base costs the. I cover in nuln oil or earthshade.... My entire nighthaunt is basically sprayed white and have armour and weapons picked out in gold then they have that blue wash over them.... They look great and took about 5 minutes a model.... Faces are the only time I put a bit of effort in and add a little bit of highlighting over the wash.... A finished army is much better than a pile of grey...

I actually think Guy and Brent's channels are great because they are relatively average painters. I hope that doesn't sound offensive to them because I love those channels but they generally produce very achievable results. Then I watch something like Squidmar and feel discouraged by the high level of painting and casual condescension for beginner level painting techniques. There are honestly quite a few channels out there I just don't understand the popularity of because I simply don't have the patience to spend 20+ hours on a single model. I hope everyone doesn't feel obligated to spend that kind of time on their models because of what's out there. I'd rather play against an avergae fully painted army than one with 90% grey plastic and 2 or 3 spectacularly painted minis every time.

eBayMiniatureRescues does style painting and has excellent examples of good looking armies with minimal effort and while a lot of it is airbrush work, you can apply some techniques to get a similar result. For example, painting your soldiers to make them look like stone golems. Prime in grey, drybrush a lighter grey, give them glowy eyes. Don’t get leadbelcher, get a vallejo metal air paint you like (dark aluminum is close) and with nuln oil there’s no difference. It applies in one coat with a brush, thinner than you can thin your paints. It’s magic.

The easy win for me is a lazy zenithal, contrasts paints, then streak and grime, miner edge highlights with either grey seer or wraithbone. My main army is Space Wolves so I do my Zenithal with "The Fang" as a base, Russ Grey as midtone and Blue Horror for the highlight (and edge highlights). These colors let the other bits take to contrast paints like a duck to water. I will admit I'm not bad a faces (I learned the wolves don't like to wear helmets), before I got into the hobby I watched million videos on painting faces so by the time I painted my first one my brain was like "I know this!"

We live in a day and age where every little mistake person does makes them a dumpster fire. This is especially true at most jobs, where people are made to suffer for every little mistake and the good of the corporation is far more important than even basic needs like food or bathroom trips. This inhuman perspective has permeated through every level of our culture, including hobbying. Being caught between fields of gray and three layers of highlighting, the attitudes towards painting in this hobby are broken in almost every way. I stay away from the hobby community and don't play at events any more partially because of this. Maybe if people understood that good enough was good enough, we wouldn't have record numbers of people dying from drug overdoses and maybe this hobby would be less toxic.

Noice. Just finished my first complete painted ultra marine today, and noticed, that the "quick and dirty" paintjob I always do isn't just a lack of practice. It is kind of a style, and I like it. Now that I fully realized that, painting is way more enjoyable 😁

I got back into 40k abouts 12 months ago and one of the factors on picking an army was how easy it was to paint. Ended up with Death Guard. You can make almost any mistake work. Now I actually paint pretty ok. Like above average I think. But its super nice not stressing too much. Things are gonna get all grimy when I oil washing them in Burnt seinna and I like more DG extra gory so there is a fair bit of blood. End of the day anything that looks like it might be a mistake is usually lost by the time I'm done.

These minis are so expensive and beautifully made that I like to take my time while painting them. I've moved on and boycotted GW in my workshop, but have many minis from other manufacturers. I love to take my time and to put in a lot of effort into them, even though they will never be "pro youtuber level". Having said that I do it because I love it. That's what matters!

I literally painted 90 guardsmen in 2 evenings for a tournament once, 3 color standard. I about wore out my airbrush doing it and I went several weeks without painting afterwards.

Painting my armies is simple I just prime them the main color and then make sure everything else is colored the way it’s supposed to be and then I do the nuln oil and now they look like they went through the grime and then god enough

I'm glad I'm not the only one who screams loudly in terror when painting faces. In all seriousness, great video! I've started enjoying painting more so than ever before by just reminding myself to have fun and ignoring superfluous, overly sculpted details that don't add much to the overall look of the miniature.

I think the best advice i could give people is to find your style and stick with it. What comes naturally to you will often be the quickest and easiest for you with a bit of practice. Im not the best painter in the world by a long shot, but i've won plenty of comps when i bother to put in the extra effort and i've done my fair share of commissions. I actually prefer the models i've done in my own style over the ones i've done super technical paint jobs on for competitions/commissions. For me at least, my painting is sort of my interpretation of the old warhammer artwork i loved so much back in my earliest days with the hobby.

Base, layer, wash, bit of a highlight and you're done. If you use a rattle can primer that is the same colour and the majority of the mini and you can paint a load of models up to a decent standard really quickly. Units don't need to be painted stupidly well as a group of minis in the same scheme looks good.

I started painting for it's own sake and like... damn, I found I REALLY don't have fun trying to paint a whole unit "properly". I love spending 8 hours on one character model, but repetition is mind breaking. Don't understand how some people can paint 30 man regiments of troops without resorting to every speedpainting hack under the sun Prime, couple base colours, drybrush, oil wash into a feeling of bliss and accomplishment. It really pisses me off when painting channels on YT will talk about drybrushing like it's some kind of scrub technique. It's 20% of the work for like 80% of the effect if you use a makeup brush.

I've (almost) finished a viking army of 130-ish minis. (I have 17 more to go that need primed) This took me about a year to get through with several side projects to distract me and keep from burning out on them. I enjoyed not having to make them all the same and to not go crazy with a tonne of shading and highlights. I contrast that with the Space Marines I spent so much time on when I was still enjoying playing 40K several editions ago (One Page rules may rekindle that interest, we'll see.) As far as anyone caring about your painted miniatures, its nice to play against a painted army versus the grey ghosts, no matter what level you're at. Save the "40-hour paint jobs per miniature" for the competitions. I'll do my table top quality and enjoy the GAME.

Definitely agree with the points in this video. Personally, I would much rather have mediocre paint jobs on my minis, than using unpainted minis when gaming. Not all the minis I paint, are painted to the same quality level. If I did, I'd have a handful of painted minis, and thousands of gray plastic pieces. And that wouldn't really look great in play.

Yeah, absolutely! I've personally been saying lately that if you want to get your minis ready for play, you need to lower your standards a bit. Less paints, less paint steps, less fixing misplaced paint, etc. :) Let's keep on painting, and getting those minis on the table! Cheers! :D

Simple Blanchitsu everyone can do with great effect: White/egg primer, liberally apply Nuln Oil, drybrush with white again. Finished. Add blood effects where needed for extra flash or choose a single primary color for things like cloth and banners and apply with wash/contrast.
