8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown is a British hybrid comedy panel show. It is a crossover of 8 Out of 10 Cats and game show Countdown. The show follows the format of Countdown, but with hosts and contestants from 8 Out of 10 Cats, and an emphasis on the humour seen on 8 Out of 10 Cats.

Countdown is a simple game show, where two members of the public compete against each other in word and number games in a thirty second time period. It has been on Channel 4 in the UK for years and has a large following of students and pensioners as they tend to be in watching TV in the afternoon. Eight out of ten cats is an entertainment show with a slight quiz element, competed between teams of comedians. One day someone thought to combine the two shows. The results are hilarious with the comedians bouncing of each other and genuinely making each other and the audience laugh, whilst still in theory competing against each other.

Someone who was at the taping of this episode said that it took forever because the audience were in hysterics and Joe was struggling to read the poem because he was laughing so much.

It's 2 x Ch4 shows mashed together. The base show is called Countdown which is a daytime (hence the odd joke about the usual audience being old) intellectual game show. Two contestants (members of the public not celebrities) compete in alternate letters and number rounds. In the letters round they have to make the longest word possible from 9 randomly selected letters. In the numbers round they have to make the randomly selected number from the numbers selected blind by the contestant. Rachel and Suzie work on that show normally. The comedians, including Jimmy, come from 8 out of 10 cats; a panel show where celebrities have to guess at answers to polls that have been taken. This is a late night and much more anarchic show. I think they initially did a one off special for charity, possibly Stand Up To Cancer, where the usual 8 out of 10 Cats people played countdown. It was such a hit they kept going. Hope this helps.

I live in Michigan and have been binge watching British game shows (panel shows as they call them). I am glad to see more Americans enjoying these shows. What impresses me is they take this seriously. This a special version of the daytime show with adult jokes and yet they still respect education and knowledge. You should watch a full episode to see the show in full glory. As noted that was a famous poet on the show. But the others have chops too. Susie Dent is a legit lexicographer. An author of several books. Her job is to solve the word puzzles along with the celebs and make judgement calls. Rachel Riley is more than their Vanna White. She is an Oxford trained mathematician. She solves the number puzzles live on the show.

Countdown is a serious show adored for decades by the elderly generation of the UK. 8 out of 10 cats by contrast is a silly panel show hosted by Jimmy Carr... This is literally combining the silly show with a serious format (the 2 regular women in these clips are from serious version). As I recall they did this at time unthinkable pilot for charity and it was so well received and such a big hit they made it a regular thing on the channel.

The format of this show is strange to people who don't know Countdown. Basically, there is a popular game show called Countdown that just does the letters/numbers bit and acts as a proper game show. There is also a completely different comedy show called 8 out of 10 cats where comedians make jokes using a 'guess the recent news story' format. This show-Cats does Countdown-is the people from the comedy show taking over the Countdown show as a bizzare mash-up/crossover thing. So they have the comedians play the game show part of the time, but also half the show is spent on them telling jokes.

Hey I know you have watched a bit of 8 out of 10 cats but I thought you might want some infro on the show you might not of picked up on, so the show your watching is called ‘8 out of 10 cats does countdown’ and they have 2 games the letter game where they give you 9(?) letters and you have to make a word out of it and the more letters equals more points but only the team with the most points (in that round) will get points (say I had 5 points and and the other team had 6 points only they would get points)(I’m pretty sure) and the number game is a game where you get random numbers (you get to pick out how many big and small numbers you get so say I wanted 3 big numbers (25,50,75,100) then I would get 4 small numbers (1-10)) then the number generation thing will pick a randomised number (usually over 200 and under 900 maybe 1000) and you’ll have to figure out how to get the big number with the smaller numbers provided (you don’t get to pick the big and small numbers just weather they will be big or small) and during breaks they would give the viewers a word like “hugecock” (an actual word they used) then they’d give you a phrase or a clue to make another word like (I can’t find an example) and it would make a normal word and not so rude (if you know what I mean) and they have mascots they usually bring those out at the start of the show😅🙂 (I think I got it all if theirs any more comment on it please my knowledge on this show is very slim since I corn watch it that much)

I don't often give suggestions for Americans or anyone else for that matter to react to different British comedy but I will for you two as you seem genuine and appreciate British comedy, I actually have an American sister in law and she gets plenty of British culture and humour etc.. Anyway a few suggestions would be classic comedies that the older generation will appreciate, in no particular order, such as Bottom, The Young Ones, Black Adder, Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers etc.. To slightly later classic British comedies such as anything from Alan Partridge (played by Steve Coogan) especially the original ones where he is a chat show host. Or The Day Today where Alan Partridge first makes an appearance on TV, believe me he is a very funny, classic character of British comedy. But for the younger British generation (kind of) I will suggest for you, which I think a lot of people will vouch for me is Matt Berry's WildLove or most things from Matt Berry, he is also very funny and unique he does quite a lot of funny parodies and he is known for his voice and demeanour etc.. He plays well known characters from different comedies for example Dixon Bainbridge from The Mighty Boosh, Todd Rivers/Lucien Sanchez from Dark Place and Douglas Reynholm from The IT Crowd. There, that's just a handful of older classic British comedies and a few later British comedies but obviously there are loads more but we will be here all bloody day. I think for the moment since you are reacting to more later British comedy quiz panel shows and stand up comics, I would suggest from my selection to react to anything Matt Berry related as he is very funny and unique as I said above.. Matt Berry's WildLove and I believe there is a Best of Douglas Reynholm from The IT Crowd played by Matt Berry. Also practically anything from Alan Partridge (Steve Coogan). Or of course any of the other ones I mentioned.

There is a comedy show called 8 of of 10 cats where they answer survey type questions. There’s another program called Countdown why they have to make words out of Random letters or the maths challenge. This is a serious highbrow show. I think it originally was for charity or a one on special but they made the 8 out of 10 crew do an episode knowing that a group of comedians could never be serious enough to play the game probably. It was a hit. People loved it so they just kept on making them. So glad you finding the British humour funny. Thanks for reminding us to laugh.

So I know you've read this before, but basically. Countdown is a "regular" game show, where you have a numbers/math section (where contestants pick numbers - technically they ask for "big or small" and they come out random- a random number comes up and they have 30 seconds to use the numbers on the board to make up the chosen number. You can only use each number once and using regular arithmetic (+-×÷)) the second part is the letters round where you choose vowels or consonants and have to make up the longest word (9 letters) you can find. There are usually 2contestants. Susie Dent is charge of "dictionary corner" (she's a lexicographer and entomologist) and rachel Riley who is a mathematician is in charge of the numbers. 8 out of 10 cats is a panel show hosted by Jimmy Carr. Sometimes they combine the 2. Carr is the host and Susie and Rachel stay in their respective positions. Since this is meant to be to a comedy show they leave out some "serious" rounds for just making fun. In this clip, since UK poet Dr. John Cooper Clarke was with Susie in the "corner" (every time it's someone different - I love the ones with Joe Lycett and James Veach) they had them write a poem. The funniest parts - usually - aren't during the "regular" rounds and that's why in these clips you always see something different. You should watch full episodes to get the idea (I personally love it) and I saw you were already told to watch it but watch the one with Johnny Vegas' poem. It was a crossover night on the channel, where they put two programmes together from different genres, and raised money for Cancer Research, I think. The guy in dictionary corner, is John Cooper Clarke, the Punk Poet. This show was so popular, and just worked, that they decided to continue it. Countdown and 8 Out of Ten Cat’s, still exist as a words game show and a topical quiz, and this show has grown legs of it’s own.

8 out of 10 Cats is a group of famous European comedians who have several shows that they work together on and 8 out 10 Cats does Countdown is one of them. They make fun of the show Countdown which is like our version of Jeopardy and Rachel and Susie are on the original show, but they also play there parts on 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown. Rachel was a "Star" on Dances with the Stars btw.

If you get a VPN and set it to UK you should be able to watch it on channel 4's website. Basically, it's a copy of a normal TV aimed at old people but this has comedians. They start by introducing and saying their mascots then there are 3 types of games. The word game: 9 letters are picked and they have to spell the longest word they can. The number round they get a bunch of numbers and they have to get to a goal by multiplying, adding, subtracting or dividing. The final round is a conundrum where they have to guess what the 9 letter jumbled up word is. All of these rounds have to be done in 30 seconds. Suzie and Rachel are from the real show. Suzie sits in dictionary corner with a guest that doesn't play and they tell the contestants what words they could've got and whether the ones they said are allowed. Rachel does the maths and occasionally gets help from Joe Wilkinson (the guy with the poem this video).

Just for added context, the guy with sunglasses and black hair is John Cooper Clarke, a famous punk poet from the UK. So he's had to perform that poem infront of alternative literature royalty

This show is a parody of "Countdown", a very respectable long-running show that's alternating rounds between a scrabble-esque anagram round called the "letters game"(to make the longest word) and a Jeopardy-eque numbers round where the answer is given and you find the maths solution to make the answer in the "numbers game". The normal, daytime, something-innocent-for-the-retired-elderly show starts with an introduction of the host, then the mathematician who stands by the gameboards and is ready to solve the numbers round and also the linguist in "Dictionary Corner" who will offer the best and most intersting possible answers to the scrabble-esque round. Each contestant is introduced and may have a mascot they've brought in with a sentimental meaning. All very nice and with the utmost decorum.... Then you get the cast of a comedy panel show "8 Out Of 10 Cats..." doing it late at night for fun instead of the normal host and contestants but keeping the mathematician and linguist who are very good sports to sign up to it. A lot of the random clips come from the comedians being introduced with their mascot. The mascots are literally any prop the comedians want to bring - a balloon-person, a cat's toilet-tray, a dead animal, a poem. It's classic British humour that offers both satire and eccentric absurdism. These mini-segments really are out of place even in the full programme. Imagine Jeopardy but with Lois CK, Bill Burr and whoever else decided to have a go with a real leniency on time constraints and the contestant introductions were just comedy skits.

Also 8/10 cats, which is a comedy panel show, based around the theme of surveys. The title (8 out of 10 cats) comes from an old UKTV cat food advertisement,(Whiskas brand) where they supposedly did a survey, and '8 out of 10 cats' said their owners preferred it! Mash the two together, and........
