Just got my private pilot license last week, I’ve been following the channel since I arrived in Florida. Hasn’t disappointed me and loving it. Going for my instrument license now, rushing a bit. Maybe I’ll have my license just after the 310’s first new flight. Keep it up!

Congratulations! If your looking for a career then nothing wrong with fast tracking as long as you can retain the training and info. Going for instrument right after is not rushing. That’s great. You should. Training is never a bad thing until it becomes too much pressure combined with the rest of life. Then you may run into problems.

For authenticity and originality, keep what ever you can - That interior came back to life, literally - and it would be a pity to scarp it for something modern & 'fancy'. The whole airplane oozes of 'the Fifties! Stay on that path!! ALL THE BEST OF LUCK - you love this airplane - you deserve to get it all right!!!

I’m sooo digging the 310. Started my aviation career at Embry Riddle in Daytona. Got my A&P there as well as Bachelor in Management. Wanted to fly but couldn’t afford the flight fees after the first semester. Dad being a E-7 in the Army I was paying my own way thru college. After working for several years post college for McDonell Douglass/Boeing I started my flight training for my PPL. Then found out I was a diabetic so lost that via a medical. Had I been able to get my multi-rating I always dreamed of getting a 310…” my favorite GA plane. And love your side comments about “never challenge or dispute the CDC.” I hear ya 5x5!

I have been flying RC Airplanes since 1988 and designed a few of my own. I built a 65" Cessna UC78/T50 Bobcat from a set of plans from 1964. I also designed my own twin engine which you can see on my channel, and back in 2015 I started building a Cessna 310 from plans which would have had a 10 foot wingspan when completed. It was designed many years ago by a guy named Bud Nosen which you can also find on youtube. Unfortunately I never finished the 310 due to a divorce and loss of my building space. Maybe some day I will finish it?

Los of us RC fliers are part of the full scale aviation world even though we are not full scale pilots. We would have a heck of a head start over people that are trying to get their PPL that didn't fly RC thats for sure especially if you have built RC aircraft from plans or kits. Most of the notable pilots from the past did start with model building or RC.

Awesome Jimmy! Two questions: is the wing without stripes and cream paint the one that was replaced? How often does an aeroplane need to be polished? Its great to watch this project :)
@GaryMCurran
@GaryMCurran 2 жыл бұрын
As to the polish question, a lot of that depends on where the airplane is based, whether or not it's stored indoors or outdoors and how many flight hours it sees per year, as well as what kind of flying conditions it sees. If it's kept in a hanger, flown 200 hours per year in VFR conditions, you might only need to polish it once a year. If it's kept outdoors, flys in something like the Pacific Northwest where it's wet, rainy in flying IN instrument conditions, you might need to polish it every six months, if not more. There is no single answer for that.

@@GaryMCurran does polishing make any difference to performance? Or is it a looks/corrosion prevention thing?

@@slammerf16 Yes! LOL. It does both. The wing surface is designed to move air molecules over it smoothly. Even tiny imperfections in the surface will cause turbulence in the airflow of the wing. If you don't understand how a wing works and generates lift, please look up Bernoulli's Principal, as that is foundational to how an airplane flies. As the air flows over the top of the wing, the curvature of the wing accelerates the airflow, lowering the local pressure. There is more pressure on the underside of the wing, which causes lift. There is something called 'laminar flow' which is used in fluid dynamics, and it applies to air, as well. A laminar flow wing gives better airflow over it, versus a 'turbulent flow' wing. Not all wings are laminar flow, since it costs extra to actually make them. Piper Aircraft, for their PA-28 series of airplanes, used a laminar flow wing, and then totally destroyed the laminar flow by using exposed, rounded rivet heads across the wing. The 'tripped' the laminar flow, totally negating all of the positive aspects of it. A company called 'Laminar Flow Systems' has a series of specialized coverings for the exposed rivets that will, according to some people, can gain up to 15-20 knots of airspeed. Just by covering the exposed rivet heads. So, having said all of that, a smooth, polished surface, will reduce some of the irregularities in the shape and texture of the wing. The wax will fill microscopic imperfections, and will also allow the air to flow easier over the wing. Take your car, for instance. You wash the car, and the water just sits on it. However, add a coat of a high quality wax and polish, and then the water beads up on the surface and runs off. The same applies to waxing your airplane, and while yes, the water beads up and runs off, air molecules also will act somewhat the same. As to the look/corrosion thing, paint will, over time, oxidize. A coat of wax prevents the oxidation of the paint by becoming a sacrificial layer. Now, in the case with this 310, I'm going to assume that they also had to use a compound to bring out the color and remove layers of oxidation. At some point, that will remove the paint because it had not been cared for in 37 years. Surprisingly, the coating of dust actually helped to protect the paint, somewhat, but only to a degree. You could see that they were able to bring much of the paint back to a shiny luster, and with the addition of a coat of wax, it will maintain that for six months to a year. I hope this answers your question.

@@GaryMCurran Hi Gary I looked at the Laminar Flow Systems youtube video.....very interesting. I have a French aircraft, SUD GY80, very similar to Cherokee, and lots of rivet heads. Allan

@@victorvodkafish Allan, I am not an aerodynamicist, so I can't really tell you about your airfoil, but in looking up the specs on the Socata Horizon, your airfoil has two different parts to it, and from that alone, I would say that you do not have a laminar flow wing. But, as I said, I'm not an aerodynamicist, so I could be totally wrong. Given a clean wing, it is possible to even keep the airflow attached even farther back, giving you greater aerodynamic flow. But, literally, even bugs on the wing will trip the laminar flow, presenting a slight reduction in the efficiency of the wing.

Hey Jimmy..love your vids…my dad was a Bonanza pilot..from 68 to 90…I have the original wooden paddle Beech propeller that was on his 47 ..straight 35.Bonanza..88”..in beautiful condition…it was removed in 68 and replaced with a aluminum 82” propeller..he had a 59 K35 Bonanza..those airplanes were bulletproof…rarely ever gave any problems
