Jimmy while you have the plane apart especially within the wings behind the exhaust augmenter tubes you should consider spray ACF50, Corrosion X or Boeshield to stop and prevent future corrosion.

Jimmy, I'm not a pilot but my father was and I started flying with him Back in the early 70's. Helped him build a plane in our garage which he flew VW engine and all. I love your videos and look forward to the new ones every week. I ask that you please trace all the wires down on the 310 and make sure the mice and rats didnt do a job on them. I just had to have the wiring harness on my truck replaced because the bastards chewed the wires and it only sat for a week. Was told that the old wires were made with a soy product which attracts them. Looking forward to that 310 getting in the air. Good Luck.

Jimmy, have you ever flown a 310 ? If not you’re in for a pleasant experience. I always thought it was one of the best small twin engine planes ever built. I’m 75 now and have time in a few of them. I sold my plane some years back. I really miss flying.

I have a question for you and the person below I was wondering if either of you have any secrets or special concoctions that will remove extremely heavy and hard scum buildup. Its a fiberglass boat that spent all of it's life sitting in the water at boat slip. I have tried the toilet bowl cleaner and simple green and super clean and industrial concrete cleaner and a few other things. I don't know if I will have any better luck when it warms up . I tried all these with the temperature in the low 30s to mid 20s. I'm out of ideas well i have one left to try and that's Muriatic acid. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
@JoranGroothengel
@JoranGroothengel 2 жыл бұрын
@CJ's random videos warmer temperatures usually help. What kind of scum/buildup is it, green or yellow? And is the underlying gelcoat in decent condition? Pressure washer usually can remove all the green stuff. Consider a steam pressure washer at a professional boat cleaner. We use oxalic acid for cleaning hard buildup. It's the same stuff you often find in stone cleaner, but those are often quite dilute solutions (at least they are here). Don't buy a liquid oxalic acid solution, but buy pure oxalic acid crystals. This is usually way cheaper, and allows you to make a saturated solution by simply adding the crystals to water: at some point the crystals stop dissolving, at which point you have the strongest oxalic acid solution you can make. Apply the solution to the hull, !use long thick chemical resistant gloves and wear eye protection! and then rinse it off after a while. I wouldn't go to muriatic acid, at that point you might as well sand and repolish your hull. Before starting that, I would reconsider the need for the hull to be cleaned and focus on more fun things in life.
@CJE2007.5
@CJE2007.5 2 жыл бұрын
@@JoranGroothengel Thank you for the information. I live in Idaho. The boat has never seen salt water so I was happy about that but we have heavy heavy minerals in most of our wells and our lakes. It spent a lot of time on lake Coeur d'Alene and Medical Lake, Washington. There's a lot of clay and minerals like calcium. There's no algae. It is extremely hard and very rough. To the touch. I don't believe that it has damaged the Gel coat at least not to bad. I think it will come around nice if i can figure out how to remove it. I did use CLR but it was very cold outside. I have kept busy cleaning up the inside of the boat and servicing the engine and drive unit. I just hate to see it look so crappy on the outside like that. If worst comes to worst I will have the gel coat redone. I got the boat for a great price and have plenty of wiggle room and if I have to have the gel coat done I will still be above water by 3 to 5 grand. I will definitely be trying the stuff you recommended. Thank you.

Pro tip for you Jimmy.... go to your nearest auto-parts store and get some "Valve Grinding Compound". But a dab of that on your screw bit. The micro titanium flakes will help your bit bite into the screw head to get those suckers out. To get even more leverage use a screw bit at the end of a speeder handle along with the valve grinding compound. I have sheared off MANY screw heads this way (they would have broke anyway).

Jimmy there is another simple little trick with extracting rusty screws from aluminum in that aluminum expands 1% more than steel when heated. This is a procedure used on merlin blocks when extracting and fitting liners. The expansion happened at less than 100 Deg C so all you have to do is pore a kettle of boiling water over the area and the screw will break free. You can often hear the rust seal pop. Try it it works very well and it does not stress the hole.

Boy does this bring back some memories. In 1956 my father and a friend bought a surplus Stinson AT-19 trainer (V77). It was a rodent housing project like this. His friends son and I were the designated mouse crap cleaners. It got restored and sold to someone with more money than brains. Major fuel pig. The Lycoming R680 was not bashful about fuel consumption. Good luck with this project.Emptying the shop vac was like opening Pandora's box of new virus' . Yuck!

Hi Jimmy, greetings from Argentina. I LOVE your channell and the funny/crazy guy behind it. What you are doing is heartwarming for me (and maybe all GA enthusiasts). You are a resurerector. Giving back life to an almost 40 year abbandoned airplane is just beautiful. Like those guys who resurect old cars but waaaayyyy much complicated. With all that being said, PLEASE NEXT TIME WHERE A FACEMASK WITH FILTERS!!! You´ll never know what kind of germs and/or bacterias are it that trash, and if they get into your (or somebody else´s) loungs, you will probably have a big issue. Safety comes FIRST (but you already know that). I´m anxious to see her fly again. Cheers from NE Patagonia. Keep up this good content.

Me too. I helped a friend clean out a farm workshop & annexe that had not had a proper clean for over 50 years. Thank God I thought to take overalls and a Versaflo PAPR mask with me to do the job. That 310 is nothing, compared to over 50 years of dust, rodent poop & nests, cobwebs and woodworm frass, I would not have offered to do it if I didn't have that level of PPE on hand. Rodents and their droppings carry some very nasty diseases.

Only vaguely on-topic but ...the ancient Egyptians deified cats above all other animals (so many cat-mummies found back in the 19th C, literally tons of them, they used them as fertiliser) because they were completely dependent on massive grain silos, and you can imagine the problem they would have had with fricking rodents - basically, no domestic cats, no ancient Egyptian civilisation.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m damn impressed that your friend 1) had no problem sucking up all kinds of mousey nasties on his 30th birthday…and 2) AT 30 YO has the means to purchase a Cessna 310, NOT a cheap plane to put back in the air! I also have 1 question: is it totally illegal to buy ONE of the super-expensive bits of hardware, then shop around to find a 99-100% facsimile that DOESN’T COST $MILLIONS??? Just asking, because I’m sure I’m not the only one that is watching and cringing every time you buy hardware that can be found in a McMaster-Carr catalog (same materials, matching specs) at a FRACTION the cost!! I know, the FAA is the scourge of the pocketbook seas, but how would they know if you are careful to buy hardware that very closely matches OEM fitment??
