I've got a single malt scotch whisky from the Edradour distillery in the highlands today. This is a single cask "Straight from the Cask" offering, and it's a total sherry bomb. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

The straight from the cask series has always been interesting to say the least. They are typically flavor bombs with heavy hitting, no nonsense whiskies. Like you, I like this one. Whenever I want a rebellious sherry matured whisky, I turn to Edradour. They never disappoint. My favorite cask strength expressions from them would be the 2009, 12 year sherry cask, the 2007, 13 year bourbon cask and the 1999 Barolo finish, I think that is a 22 year whisky. Also, did you just divulge the secret of making Edradour whiskies?!? They be coming for you Geoff!

I have yet to come across a reasonably priced cs from them in those Ibisco decanters. I did try some as a sample, though. It was bourbon matured and it was absolutely delicious. I'm keen to try more heavy hitters from this distillery. Btw I love the term “rebellious sherry!” 🥃

Got a 12y cask strength from my gf for christmas. its very oily, full bodied, sweet jam dates but also the typical edradour tobacco leather, notes. What suprised me, even tho the casks are so active, it has a very nice malty, cereal note. Amazing stuff. But Edradour is also my fav distillery, always enjoying their dirty whiskies.

Edradour is a distillery that has always interested me. I've tasted a few and it's been hit and miss. I love sherry and I love peat. But I have not tasted a Ballechin that quite hits the spot with me. Their sherried stuff though gives me that "dirty" and "funky" flavour I really like that is sometimes missing from other sherried whiskies. I have recently moved from South Africa to Europe and left a large stash of whisky behind in storage and am slowly building a new collection here. I definitely want to add an Edradour to the mix here and am torn between this SFTC edition, the Signatory release or another Independent Bottler's called the Ultimate (all easily available here). Their standard 10 year old at 40% is nice but I can't bring myself to spend hard earned money on 40% ABV whiskies. This review may have just pushed me over the edge to go for the Signatory or Ultimate bottling. Thanks for the great review.
@Gwhisky
@Gwhisky Жыл бұрын
I agree with your point about Ballechin. I've had some fantastic ones, and quite a few lesser ones. I think the "funk" lends it better to the Edradour line. I liked the SFTC stuff. I can't say I've tried the other two. Sadly, the Signatory isn't available in my market, but I've heard good things about it. There's also the Ibisco decanters to consider, although they're pricier. I'm sure you'll be happy with either, though. For me it's quite a reliable brand as long as you can get into the "dirty sherry" genre. Cheers! 🥃

I agree with the @4:13 where you visually express that you wished the bottle was larger. Here in Canada it's around $165 so you can do the math for a 750ml. The price has stopped me so far but I am curious that you say it's almost over sherried. Although it might not be as well balanced, I wouldn't mind having something on the extreme side in the collection.
@Gwhisky

It's definitely unique. Closest in style to a Kavalan or an Amrut, one of those super dense world whiskies from warmer climates. I like it, and it's very different from my other bottles. It's definitely a cool one to have and to show to friends. Unfortunately I don't think I'd pay CAD $165 for this bottle. Oof.

Some 20y ago, circa 2002-2004, Ontario had these for 85$CAD (500 mL) : it was too much at the time, since a Macallan 10 CS (750 mL) was 55$CAD. Back then, these CS sherry monsters above 55% , were all equally dark - thick (oily) - and saccharin sweet to Nth degree ! ( i still have a case of each, circa 1994-1995 vintage) ! . . . I add 1 ounce of these to 3 ounces of the mundane 43-46% abv of todays monsters to add zest, floral notes and punch on the nose. Sorry, never water to my Scotches, only a dab of younger malt from same distillery. Great review.

The 2010 vintage of SFTC Sherry Cask goes for ~66-67 euros in Bulgaria. Dollar for dollar the price is the same as the price of the 0.7 l. , 12 yo Ibisco decanter release. So far I've been holding back on this one because I have the IBISCO bottle, the Signatory 10 yo 46%, Caledonia 12 yo and Fairy Flag 15 yo. I have also tasted the bourbon matured 10 yo Ibisco release. So, albeit SFTC is apparently very well done, I doubt will will be something unheard of. Plus, I absolutely hate the pathetic, low-cost timber box which looks like some home-made bird house :) Not that the tubes that Ibisco Edradours come in are particularly classy, but this box is outright junk for me :) Cheers!

"Home-made bird house." Hah! I like it, but it totally does look like one! Yeah it sounds like you've got enough Edradour. Was really excited about this video as soon as I saw that thumbnail, as I just recently put this Whiskey in my digital cart in some web shop. But didn't bought it yet. Actually thinking to buy this one for quite a while now. Can someone help me, with how it's taste profile relates to the Signatory Vintage - Edradour 10 46% dark releases? Example: (Edradour 10yo Signatory 2010/20 [L20 Cask 52, Bottle 75] 46%) about 60€ here / Straight from the Barrel about 90€ Tried and got some of those as they are a great value, for me, with most of those, the last edge of taste, making it really interesting is missing for me though. Would be happy for any feedback on this! (I'm not afraid of really bold flavours in general, but maybe that's the problem with the Signatorys aswell, the Sherry kinda over-killing it.) Cheers!

Hi Geoff. By shear coincidence, I was drinking the Signatory bottling of this, as your feed came to me. When it comes to my market, I’d like to say to Edradour, “why can’t you produce an integrity bottling of your own scotch in a proper sized bottle. Why have you left it to an independent bottler to show us what a great spirit this is.
@Gwhisky

Well Edradour is owned by Signatory, so they're kind of one and the same. But they've made some odd choices with their lineup. Similar to Ben Nevis, the range is a bit messy. A standard range, a finished range, a single cask range, a series of Signatory releases, and a separate peated line that's similarly divided. They're all over the place, it can be pretty confusing. I've heard the Signatory stuff is good! Cheers guys! 🥃

So, firstly, well done, Good Ser…and, I’m most (respectfully) proud of you, and I’m sure you know why. That said, let’s get the one nitpick out of the way quickly, as their peated elixir is actually pronounced, “BA-LECK-KIN”, not, “BAL-A-KIN”… 🤷🏻‍♂️😁 And, to answer your indirect query about how they get their SFTC, IBISCO, and UCF SIGNATORY whiskies so unbelievably unctuous, they use 12 YO SPANISH OAK Hogsheads and Butts from Jose Y Miguel Martin, each one having aged Oloroso Sherries for the full time duration scribed herein. The “wet” cask idea that always pops up here and there as genesis for the natural color of the whiskies is factually inaccurate, as the 5+ liters of Sherry left in the casks becomes (mostly, if not fully) absorbed by the Oak during both the roughly 3 month and 1 month (total time) boat and road trips to Edradour, respectively…🥃🏰🥃

Probably in the minority here, but I personally prefer smaller bottles. 700ml is just way too much for me. There is so much whisky out there I want to try. Can't keep up. Samples are too small. 200-375ml would be perfect. I can enjoy it long term and I can share some and it wont stay open for years and years.
@Gwhisky
@Gwhisky 2 жыл бұрын
I can see that. Some lesser bottlings do tend to stick around a little too long when you've got 700ml. But I often split bottles among friends, and those that aren't splits are shared among my whisky group, so nothing ever seems to last too long. But yes, there's definitely a case to be made for smaller bottles. We can try more whisky at a lower price, which is of course a good thing!
