I've watched this video probably more than a handful of times, and with each and every time, it leaves me feeling.. Empty. I can't help but think about all of the awesome stuff they could have brought to light in this video, and Donut Media, of all people I feel really dropped the ball on this one. I'm here to pick up where they left off feed you that good stuff.
In This comprehensive video I go in depth with Z32 and it's racing heritage in Le Man's. Top Speed record at Bonneville as well some of the fastest, Street chassis Z32's in the world, from record setting passes, to the vehicle's downfalls and weaknesses.
Whether you're an automotive enthusiast, a 300ZX owner, or simply curious about exceptional vehicles, you won't want to miss this in-depth analysis that goes where Donut Media didn't.
Special thanks too:

I love how people refuse to even consider the 300zx and their engines. Z32’s and Z31’s are some of the most capable cars that I know of, if you know what to do with them. Even the VG30ET has good potential.

I've owned my 93TT since 2009. Had to fix many hack jobs from previous owner. It was my DD for 4 yrs, then ran overboost resulting in detonation for couple of yrs. It is still running today without issues. These cars are difficult to spot nowadays and it gets alot of attention now. Having fun in my fast tesla at the moment but eventually I will get to adding major mods

Previous hack jobs are a big risk. I was recently looking at a "mint" NA, and it's overall excellent, with a just a few weird things. As I was looking at the engine bay, I noticed a harness zip tied to the radiator hose, wiring unprotected from the loom, so I think it's likely it's had at least one hack repair. I really don't want to deal with previous hacks, so I walked away.

Donut Media is generic. They have no idea about the racing heritage of the 300zx (once again you said what I was going to type). You also nailed another issue about the car being handed down from owner to owner (my experience). When I had my black 300zx Twin Turbo (automatic), I was a young kid and the third owner (23-years ago). I was young and there was not much on the net about the repairs. Lastly, 15 years ago (you beat me to it again), you were able to get a mint 300zx Twin Turbo for 16k. Even before COVID (2019), you were able to get a mint Twin Turbo for 19-21k. Great video. You hit the facts.

Great video Billy. The z32 is a victim of its own success, selling 89,000 in the U.S. alone during its production run and frequently winning car and drivers best in class awards many years while directly competing with mk4 Supra (~11,293 produced) and Rx7 (~13,879). With so many more Z32s being produced and so many owners not keeping up with the sometimes expensive required maintenance many of these cars fell into disrepair and changed hands often. I believe these issues helped to generate the stereo type of them not being mechanically sound and to just swap them. The joke often is, that with current cost and availability of most of the popular stock swap motors (2JZ, Rb26, LS) you could spend that same money to make the stock VG mechanically sound and producing over 500whp.

The 2+2 is an interesting talking point as well, for about 150lb(?) you get a more stable platform due to the longer wheelbase in addition to near 50/50 weight dist. :D You're a great source of info for these cars man plz don't stop.
@Billy_Built
@Billy_Built 11 ай бұрын
For Sure! 2+2 's are definitely more balanced out of the box. Although their are multiple ways to shift weight around on the 2+0 which I'm trying to do to an extent actually! Once the car is all together I'd definitely like to get it on some scales!

@nomienoman9232 I bought 3 cars, (FD RX-7, Z32 300ZX, and MK4 Supra) with basic knowledge on cars. All of which needed an engine and supporting mods. I threw the supra together cheaply, and it runs like a champ still. I took a gamble with the FD RX-7 and was careful about key things. It runs like a champ after 4 years. The Z32, I put it together and got it running, then no oil pressure, bought an oil pump, replaced steering rack bushings, and it kills injectors. Bought a brand new engine harness, runs perfectly for 3 days. Then kills the injectors again and now fuel pump randomly primes only... this car is driving me insane. I'm now changing the battery cable and doing a grounding kit. I pray that this works....

Love your passion for the z32, Billy! It was my first car, second, and third car. '90 2+2, '95 TT, and then the '95 vert. Mine has sat for quite some time now, but some day I'm going to fix it up. It's been so long since I've followed the cars that I feel completely clueless these days, ha! It's a great car. My '90 Twin-Turbo I got from my Dad. It was one of the first in the US (oct '89). I took it over late '90's and drove it off and on as a toy. My son took it over for a few years until he deployed. I personally think what killed it is how daunting it is under the hood and challenging; pulling the upper intake for injectors for instance, or my dead turbos will take a engine pull to do it. So.. it is super expensive to have it done, and beyond what you want to do in your own garage for most. Out of my collection of toys, it's the one I dread working on.

Certainly intimidating under the hood at first. However it is the direction that many manufacturer's have gone as the cars become less and less consumer-repair friendly.

lol.. "at first".. I've been looking under that hood for 30 years and its still intimidating. None of my other cars evokes the same feeling of dread when there's something I need to fix. Even replacing a headlight bulb requires my daughter's skinny hands and nimble fingers since my meat hooks can't make the squeeze.

The unspoken advantage come from the chassis dynamics... particularly the slicktop. The weight in this form is light, compares to that of the vaunted NSX, can be made lighter still if you choose, much lighter than the jug-ass Supra, plus it has a lot of torsional rigidity, and when you considser the VG in n/a form, which with a proper crank can spin up, make tons of power. The weigh balance is favorable. You end up with a consistant, real canyon carver that very few can keep up with. And its daily drivable - very light on its feet.. Not everybody drag races the Z32.

Great video Billy, excellent information. This is definitely a video that needs to be watch several times so as not to miss something. The only thing I'm tending to disagree with you on is the transmission. My original one was great and I always treated it well. No hard launches, no burnouts ever, easy on the downshifts especially into 1st. And it was great, even with supposed weak sincros and all, at north of 500 whp since 2001. But as soon as I went north of 700 wheel hp and torque, after a few hundred miles it began to whine, as did the new 98 spec one I bought from Nissan. In fact, that one is even worse, as it's MUCH louder then my original one. My original one has RP 75/90 in it and the 98 spec has MT90. Any thoughts or suggestions you may have on where I should go from this point would be greatly appreciated.
@Billy_Built
@Billy_Built 11 ай бұрын
That's true, the wine I feel is almost unavoidable. However, I've heard speculation that it has to do with the alignment of the transmission into the pilot bearing and such. I just came to accept the fact that they will always whine. Lol The CDO0 is not impervious to these stupid problems either though. Which is why I would put them on equal terms, especially considering the 350Z trans is way newer.

I know its been 3 months, but my advice is buy a Honda or something reliable because drifting is very expensive so you are going to need a job first. Tires alone are like $400 a drift day, then gas and if you crash. RX8s are unreliable but you can Kswap them. Basically buy a Corolla or a Civic or something cheap and good so you can get to work and pay for the drift car because when you drift a car, or drive it hard at all it WILL break eventually.

Agree with your point on just getting a Z over a 240. Always gotta laugh at 240 guys asking 5k for an 89 s13 with no interior. Also, I never understood why people are so afraid of these motors. It was the first car I cut my teeth in on when i was 16, made it me a better mechanic. At 25 finally got around to doing the full NA to TT swap on my 92 2+0. That was 5 years ago and I havent had to lift the hood on it since...but with that being said I literally just found a set of new style TT injectors so Plenum pull this week. Best advice to anyone buying a Z, just pull the engine when you buy it. Get a seal kit, do the 120k service, delete the EGR, coolant bypass, and AIV. Oh and get the upgraded det sensor sub-harness. Once you do all that, you'll have peace of mind and the car becomes cake to work on. Also, theres a shit ton of space in that engine bay without Rad, intake hoses and the plenum off.

Honestly i dont get why 240 guys dont buy these, swap in the sr20, and the front knuckles and coilovers. They end up swapping to most of this stuff anyways and you have to swap out the ka anyways. Vs swapping everything down to the brakes out of a z. Just start with the Z! Na Z32s are still super cheap.
