/* ---- VIDEO INFORMATION ---- */
Ok so Everything, Everywhere All At Once is my favourite film of 2022 and I thought what better way to close out the year than with a big breakdown on the movie. In this video we're gonna be going through the film scene by scene to point out all the hidden details, easter eggs and little gems that elevate this above most of the other movies released this year.
Everything is really well put together with even the title sequence being something that is stagged out throughout the film during several shots that all echo each other.
Now throughout the film we follow a laundromate owner called Evelyn who's down on her luck. After being called into the IRS her husbands body is possessed by a man claiming to be him from the Alpha Universe. He drafts her into a multiversal war a force known as the Jobu Tupaki who has the potential to destroy all life as we know it.
The name Jobu Tupacki is a bit of a weird one and it was said by the creative team that this was chosen because it's just a bunch of sounds that dont mean anything. It's meant to be disjointed and incomprehensible much like the multiverse itself and all the things that exist within it.
Revealed to be Evelyns daughter Joy she was selected by her mother to be someone who would travel across the multiverse. Unfortunately it fractured her mind and Alpha Joy now exists everywhere all at once. She can see everything and thus through seeing all life she realises that nothing actually matters. It's kinda like when you see those universe you are here memes and Joy saw everything as being insignificant. She placed everything onto a bagle and this has now created a black hole that can destroy all life everywhere.
Now a Bagel being used for this actually has a deeper meaning. Howard Bloom theorised that the universe itself is shaped like a bagel and thus the idea that a bagel encompasses everything has more to it.

I think it’s definitely intentional that they named the daughter “Joy” as we get lines from Evelyn about “wanting MY joy” or “where is my joy?” But now your video brought another use of it to light for me. In the universe of movie star Evelyn and CEO Waymond they “don’t have Joy” because they didn’t stay together. Both the emotion and the daughter character.

Akwafina had to drop out of the production of filming, where she was to play Evelyn’s daughter, because of scheduling conflicts with this film & her role in SHANG CHI….I’m actually happy that happened, because Stephanie Hsu playing Joy was a breath of fresh air. I feel Akwafina would have been too much of a visual comic relief disaster as, Stephanie’s sweetness & innocence made the role much more likable in this instant.

One thing I thought was phenomenal was the number 42 bag missing at the start with Googly eyes. Number 42 is meant to represent “everything” or the meaning of life and Evelyn says it’s lost until Waymond says it’s upstairs with googly eyes on it. Evelyn then removes the eyes and says “no more google eyes”. Very much representing how waymond is actually always that positive full of life character “I think the bags are happier up there” and how Evelyn didn’t see it that way at the start of the film. Number 42 meaning of life missing from Evelyn, waymond helps her find it and she dismisses it straight at the start of the film. And I thought that was bloody genius.

This is hands down my favorite movie of the year. I had a few that stood out amongst the rest but when you take into consideration the budget of this movie was somewhere between 15 to 25 million you forget all of the others. I wanted to see this movie after reading it won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. I was blown away by the film while trying to figure out what was going on and even noticed its connections with Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, especially Batman vs Owlman. Your video also helped. Personally, I've imagined myself in alternate worlds or different versions of me (fighter, rich, etc.). This happens often when I've experienced sadness, anger, and pain. Heck, even not getting several likes on a comment can make me imagine a world where it had the most. However, I often forget to be grateful for what I have and accomplished in life (fight to help others achieve their goals, rich in friends and career, having the option to leave a comment, etc.). This movie also made me realize that even when I'm living my life, there can be moments of when I can still be distracted by my imagined universes, but I need to remember to stay in my life and embrace it, regardless of whether it's good or bad.

I was reminded of "A Christmas Carol" when I watched this, along with all the other references. A curmudgeon (on the outside) focusing on money instead of family is shown what her life could have been and changes in the end. Lots of differences as well, and the emotional gut punches in this film are so much stronger than that story, but it felt like there might be a little Dickens DNA in the story.

A character being in the audience watching the movie they're in reminds me of one of my favorite movies - Tampopo - the character also breaks the 4th wall in these scenes. A really fun watch.

The bagel seems a lift from The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, in which the entire universe is generated from the stochastic patterns found in a small piece of cake. Also the stick-on eyes reminded me of the Mighty Boosh, where Polo mints are stuck everywhere.

Everyone seems to miss that the sword Jobu Tupaki uses when they go through universes is a crouching tiger, hidden dragon reference.

Merry Christmas, Paul ! What a better family movie to celebrate it with than this masterpiece !? Little correction, though, at 27:16, the universe they jumped in is not feudal Japan, but more like 18th century China (visible through the style of their clothing, that was the vestimentary style of the Qing Empire, the last dynasty), an era where lots of Chinese kungfu and Wuxia movies take place (most notably among them, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, also starring... Michelle Yeoh !). Also, as a chinese descendant, I just wanted to point out a little tidbit that mostly only chinese people have seen : the everything bagel is black, with a white hole in it. The googly eyes are white circles with a black dot in it. These are actually directly symbolizing the duality between the yin and the yang ! The bagel being Yin (darkness, water, cold, death, feminine essence...) And it is the symbol of Jobu Tupaki. The Yang energy is the polar opposite, light, warmth, fire, life, male essence...) and it is the symbol of Waymond. They are basically Evelyn's little devil and angel on her shoulders, constantly trying to get her towards their viewpoint of life, and in the end, Evelyn chooses a third path : her own, right in the middle ! Embracing the nihilism of Jobu, but also combining it with the kindness of Waymond, thus combining both Yin AND yang, becoming a full circle of Taiji herself, therefore reaching cosmic balance, becoming the most powerful being in the multiverse (and possibly in the history of filmmaking !) This movie is just insane ! Wish you a great first holidays with your bigger family, now !

@@harold3165 If Doctor Strange is so strong then why couldn’t he stop Thanos or Wanda? If Wanda was as strong in MoM then why wasn’t she strong in Endgame? Plot holes. Also Antman sucked, why did Kang die and is Scott stuck in the quantum realm

Not to mention the book show at 27:38, titled like the movie is basically the nihilistic version of Dr. Seuss' book 'Oh the Places You'll Go'. The cover's are direct opposites of each other too: Seuss' cover shows a character surrounded by a colourful world, elevated to the sky to reach their goals, whereas the movie's version of the book is a monochromatic world with the character being sucked into the bagel-verse void which is nihilism.

Thanks for breaking this all down. I really love this movie. My favorite scene is when she's turning things around on the staircase and Waymond says, "What are you doing?" and Evelyn says, "I'm learning to fight like you."
