Batman v Superman comes out in 2 weeks, so this is week 1/3 celebration leading up to that. Zack Snyder is with many critics, and maybe his style is an acquired taste, but Watchmen stands on it's own. The Critics. Are. Wrong. Right? Here's everything right with Watchmen.

Kelly There are elements that are shit and elements that are great. I personally love it and have watched the Ultimate Cut at least a dozen times, but I also know that it objectively fails in a number of areas. The Dark Knight and Joker are pretty much universally accepted by people who actually do this for a living as the greatest examples of PG-13 and R-rated comic book movies, respectively.

FurballGamer, Rorschach was like Batman if he didn’t come from money & had Red Hood’s mentality. That’s what I liked about him. He was one of the people who had a bad day & rolled with it. Even though some of his views are very Black & White, he was still a hero among the people & he ended up being my favorite Hero out of the entire film. I think that Jackie Earle Haley should’ve gotten more recognition for breathing life into the character & making him so much more realistic than he was in the pages of the graphic novel. And that voice! It’s perfect for the character. He did an incredible job with it.

This movie would be huge if it were released today. It's only problem was that it was a deconstruction of the superhero genre at a time when movie going audiences were really just being introduced to that genre. Comic fans appreciated it, but the general public didn't. Judging from the success of recent movies like Logan and Deadpool that tweaked the superhero genre and pulled it apart, it seems likely that the Watchmen would be received very differently today.

Look closer at that shot with Nite Owl from the Dylan video. You'll notice that Batman probably *doesn't* exist because in this alternate world of superheroes, Nite Owl saved Thomas and Martha Wayne from Joe Chill. Remember that in the Watchmen alternate timeline, comic books are not about superheroes at all... they're about pirates. Here's one reason why.
@millwaterpublishing1387
@millwaterpublishing1387 8 жыл бұрын
In the graphic novel, comic book superheroes were a thing. Superman inspired Nite Owl I and probably Hooded Justice... But the rise of "real world" superheroes diverted comics toward pirates after that. Batman comics may have slipped-in before pirates became the dominant genre. The scene does look like Nite Owl I saves the Waynes, but that's probably just a little homage, as the Wayne murders would have been like 20 years earlier.

Millwater Publishing Yes, I am aware of those "Under the Hood," excerpts found at the end of the first few issues of Watchmen. If I recall correctly, Hollis did spend some time talking about his fondness of the wholesome morality tales found in Superman, Doc Savage, and The Shadow. I don't remember if he ever spoke about Batman, but I don't think he did. Considering Batman was an adapted riff on The Shadow, I don't see where both characters would need to be spoken of in the lean narrative spun by Alan Moore, even in his early years. The inclusion of the scene in the Dylan video, I thought, was a meta-commentary on the alternate history of Watchmen (possibly one for Batman?) Again, largely unnecessary, but a cute little Easter Egg... even if it can't be verified.

+Admiral Ackbar Nah man, the artwork itself tells a story of its own. The panels with the news-vendor talking and strips from the in-comic comic (The Black Freighter) CANNOT be replicated as poignantly in raw text. This is even more evident in the build up to the NY explosion where Veidt explains his masterstroke and alongside final few minutes of those New Yorkers' lives are shown.

One awesome moment you missed is when they ask Oz what he would have done if they gunman had shot him first instead of the woman. He gives that sardonic little smirk and offhandedly says, "I guess I would have had to catch the bullet." Its this smug little moment that in the (relatively) grounded heroics is seen as bluster or arrogance. Yet later, when Laurie shoots him...

He's smaller than even Laurie (as you can see in the Watchmen group shot that you can see here: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4e/Watchmen_cast.png He barely comes up to Dan's shoulders) But he still kicks ass and takes names. @hallwaybeats86
@hallwaybeats86 8 жыл бұрын
ABSOLUTELY! It's a big choice for a studio to go PG-13 or R17+. Money? or realistic adaption? Even though Deadpool is the biggest R17+ movie of all time, it still only took around 1/2 of the Avengers box office takings. 20th century fox knew it would never surpass the Avengers. That's why they only gave them a 57m budget. Also didn't do a summer release because they weren't trying to focus on the families going to go see it in the summer break. But turning 57m into 750m is a very good profit from their perspective!

The novel had a ton of fat. The movie still isn't as good but it's one of the best superhero movies ever made. Rorschach is brought to the screen perfectly. Almost every character is. The action is better in the movie as well. In the book Ozymandias just trashes Rorschach and Nite Owl immediately but in the movie they at least put up a bit of a fight. The bullet catching scene is also done better.
@geneparmesan8748

"The novel had a ton of fat". Agreed, and I feel like a lot of people don't understand this. The novel is brilliant for how many things it intrinsically weaves together. If you're a reader with an eye for detail, there are hours upon hours of Easter eggs to glean out of every panel. If you're a speed-reader, you can still get a very good story, but you'll miss out on a wealth of details. Moviegoers don't have the same ability to skim the minutiae, and I think it would be impossible to make the Watchmen comic into a movie (or even a series) without it being an absolute pacing nightmare. What they chose to leave out, and what they chose to change, worked for the movie. Even this new series refreshingly decided to make a sequel, instead of trying to recreate every tiny detail of the original, and I appreciate that.

Rorschach’s death is also way better since Nite Owl is there to see it. Adds way more to the scene than he and Silk Spectre fucking did. And the Manhattan bombs taking the place of the squid things is another much appreciated change that makes all the nations uniting make more sense. They all know what Manhattan is capable of, unlike in the comics where they unite purely out of paranoia that there MIGHT be squid creatures attacking the planet. Honestly kinda wished the miniseries went with that instead of the squids, but it was still pretty good.

How the mask works was explained in the book. And that scene where Rorschach says the Comedian was "a parody" of the world's true face... There needs to be a second part to that line... While the Comedian was a parody of the world, Rorschach was a mirror for the world. He shows it it's true face. that's why they fear him. They can't bear to look at what they truly are. He shows them just how morbid and evil they are. The world is ever changing, but the difference between right and wrong (in Roraschach's eyes) is ALWAYS Black and White, just like the mask... While the shapes and forms on the mask may change, just like the people, culture, and times of real world, the nature of right and wrong will ALWAYS be black and white; just like the mask.

I have seen movies that don't try to impart anything meaningful and people gush about them as though their lives have been changed. This movie has so much to say about humanity and mortality that I have really found some comfort in it when I look around me. I don't think Zach Snyder is a bad film maker. He just needs to be restrained a little. He's better when it comes to adapting others scripts/stories rather than his own. I think a lot of his downfall is when he try's to make smart films and they become unnecessarily convoluted like BVS or suckerpunch. He's not a smart filmmaker he's a visual storyteller that needs to focus on making fun superhero/action movies. Watchmen is good

It was so sentimental for me with the amazing ties to the "first gen of masked heros" and the new generation. My grandpa was one of the few guys who put together the first comic con in ny 1960s, he was the first person to collect and then sell back issues before a comic store existed , by mail order fanzine and local kids searching boxes in the basement. I am glad we did get to see a few of the first marvel films together. Everyone loved him. Why do I spend more time watching and rewatching these than I do watching the originals, especially the ones I haven't seen? I guess it's more fun liking things. Love your work.

It blows my mind that Dr Manhattan is the most realistic scientifically accurate portray of a hero with god like powers. (expect for the part when he somehow puts himself back together) Also I love that he basically created the DC universe in the rebirth comic.

9:30 I just noticed it, but the Suit on the right is similar to the Earth-3 (Crime Sindicate) Owl-Man, that was basically an evil version of Batman from Earth-1/Prime.

7:47, Important to note Laurie wasn't conceived as a result of the rape; she was the result of consensual liaison later; this is why we see her stepfather shouting at Silk Specter I in the flashbacks. It wasn't the "conception from hate," which spurred Manhattan's realization, rather the weirdness of the coupling that SSI could still love the Comedian in spite of the horrible man he was, even if only for one interaction.

I thought Watchmen was one of the best adaptations of a book I've ever seen. Of course, it's hard to really mess it up considering it's sort of in the nature of graphic novels that they read like a storyboard. All you have to do is not deviate too hard and you're golden. I regret cutting the Black Ship subplot but I understand it, and I actually thought changing the twist at the end made it better. Having Dr. Manhattan be the invented villain, instead of psychic aliens, makes a lot more sense. It really is difficult to fit everything that goes into a book into a movie, but this is about as good as it gets.

It's funny because Snyder did want to have the Freighter in the movie, with 300-level effects and scale. The studio didn't give him the budget though. If Snyder had no constraints I guarantee that this would've been a shot-for-shot adaptation.

This comic book adaptation has become my favorite of all time. It’s quite amazing when I think about it because prior to the film I had never even heard of Watchmen. But now, coupled with the HBO show I am obsessed with the comic book. I hope we get more movies/ shows in this universe.
