Birdman is a pretty great movie, with a lot of unique touches. We love it. But like all movies, it's got sins, and we felt bound to point them out and count them.
Thursday: Sins of a movie from the early 1970's.
Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we expose next?!

The fact that a feature length film was made with only has 16 cuts is absolutely incredible. The level of talent, direction, planning, mapping, and discipline that must have required is mind-boggling. That alone is award worthy.

Fun Fact ; The Scene where Michael Keaton is rushing threw super dense New York sidewalk traffic in his *underwear* was not a staged setting. They couldn't get the permits to restrict the area and use extras so they just ran the scene live via everyday New Yorkers who're *unbeknownst* to what was happening. In turn almost every reaction you're seeing like people filming and laughing are all legit reactions. There was actually a different street performance going on just off screen that was drawing a lot of attention and that's when they filmed, so there would at least be enough room for them to move quickly.

I'm still 99.9% sure that he dies onstage and the last 10 min are his fantasy before death. Literally nothing makes sense in it, including his ex wife and daughter and the critic all loving him, plus him getting the praise and attention he desired so much. 99.9% certain.

Every fantastic incident was adressed right after it happened including the suicide. For example, after Riggan trashed his room using his special powers his friend enters the room revealing he was just using his hands not any special force or he imagines flying to the play but right after he enters the building a taxi driver follows him to receive his money. He survived the suicide too, they said that he only broke his nose but we never see the explanation of the final scene where he jumps off the window. Also, we see Sam from Riggan's point of view in the final scene. In his mind he achieved his goal he earned respect as an artist and got his daughter to love him. In short, the ending scene is fully fantasized.

It's hard to explain why, for me. I lack the vocabulary. Btw, anyone who knows how to improve vocablary, please let me know. But for me, it gave me a feel of Broadway. I loved the drums in the back, it made it feel authentic and I love the films that try to be artsy and does it well. The ones that try too hard, you'll recognise.

Lose yourself on wikipedia going from a page to another for 1-2h, just being curious. If you are sufficiently alright with it, start a conversion with someone different from you. If you always keep your social life to the same circle, you'll never learn and witness different point of view. The brain need feeding as much as the body need exercise. This is just my opinion.

I'm simply voicing my concerns. I feel it's more fun and informative when a movie, no matter how bad, is critiqued with a sense of humor. SometimesI feel CinemaSins boils down to humorless bitching that sometimes doesn't hold merit when you actually pay attention to the movie. I'd be willing to forgive those instances if they were done with more humor, but criticizing a nonexistent problem and then using the "We're assholes" excuse doesn't an entertaining video make. It's basic comedy: rip and tear all you want, but for God's sake, tell a joke.

I really think the movie's ending would have been a lot better if he had actually died. Like they pointed out, it totally completes the metaphor and it makes the whole story feel as truly tragic as it should have been. I hate happy endings all the time, I don't mind them for certain movies but this film really built itself in such a way that it was meant to end tragically. The fact that he survives and everything goes great for him (becomes famous, family loves him, etc.) really seemed to miss the point of their own film. Oh well, it was still an incredible movie. It just would have been AMAZING if they had gone with the tragic ending of Birdman's death

11:45 YES. So much this. Sure, ending with him killing himself onstage would have been a bit predictable\cliche for an artsy film, but it would have still wrapped up everything well while sticking with the "one tracking shot" gimmick. This coda is totally pointless dicking about, and "it means what you want it to mean, man" endings are an even worse cliche of artsy films.
@theawecabinet
@theawecabinet 6 жыл бұрын
It opens up the possibility that the entire film is his dream-like memories piecing together what just happened as he wakes up in hospital. Also he becomes birdman again, with the bandages and splint making his mask and beak. The shot with birdman sitting on the toilet perfectly sums up the aspirations of artists vs reality of showbiz. And the ending is suicide because he already tried to kill himself twice already (in the sea and onstage). Sam understand he got what he wanted, a release from life. It's a great ending.
@angelpygs72
@angelpygs72 6 жыл бұрын
Okay so the entire one track shot gimmick was done on purpose. So that when the first cut in the entire movie happens, that scene is immediately put in the spotlight as completely different. It also would have never shown the character getting what he wanted, and it also would have never established that the entire physics manipulating aspect of the movie may be in his head. It provides a great piece of characterization, that the insanity this man has extends to psychosis levels of delusion, yet he still pulled off an absolutely brilliant play. It showed what actors go through, it tied together the dream vs the reality philosophy. I'm sure I could watch it again and explain a hundred more things to you that this ending did to tie the movie up.

He definitely killed himself on stage. Everything after that is a dream/vision mirroring his desires leading up to his mental death as well

"...He definitely killed himself on stage. ...." I am not convinced. In the first scene of the rehearsal (when the light drops) there is a line in the play about a botched suicide where the guy blows his nose off. It's a foreshadowing.
@RepublicOfBridger
@RepublicOfBridger 6 жыл бұрын
a foreshadowing desire- he wanted to be a legend but come on, that doesn't happen including for him (plus that gun is definitely pointed at his temple). Tabitha left the play immediately and we cut the "long take" for the first time ushering an end to the great show. We get glimpses of dead jellyfish on the beach, harkening back to his story of attempted suicide. These jellyfish are dead - that's poetic symbolism 101 brutha

Thank you very much for making your CinemaSins videos. My depression has become significantly worse lately, and I find myself extremely sensitive to everything, including things I see in movies. Because of this, it's become very hard to find movies I can psychologically handle, without spiraling downward. However, I find that there are lots of CinemaSins videos I can safely watch, even if I would've spiraled if I'd seen the actual movie. It feels really good to have access to more entertainment because of your channel. Thank you, CinemaSins. :) (P.S. I am getting professional help, and I look forward to being more functional again.)

I personally liked the ending. I imagined it as Riggins actually killing himself onstage, and what happens in the hospital is his final delusion: he imagines the show got the rave review he desired (note how the flowers in his hospital room are the ones he asked for from the start - instead of the roses he tells everyone he hates, and yet he always seems to get anyway). Or, potentially, he killed himself even earlier on the rooftop - this would mean even reconciling with his wife was part of the delusion, tying together all the loose ends he has left behind in his life. The ambiguity (and all the theorizing) this ending creates makes it so much more interesting to me, and lets us keep the discussion going, which I applaud.
