There's no reason to question his story, and they probably assumed as much just from investigating the scene itself. It looks like a simple open and shut case, and there is no reason to investigate further. They have no reason to do any DNA tests on any blood they find, as they have all the bodies. Not to mention that no DA would touch a case with no body, no clear crime to charge him with, and the man in question is a former vet who lost a child and was brutalized and robbed in a home invasion. He'd get laughed out of court, and the blind guy could probably get all his money back in a counter suit for harassment. Heck, even if the police saw this entire movie, a half decent lawyer could make a compelling case for innocent for reason of insanity...
