Anything with Dwarves, Elves and Orcs are based off Tolkien, no exceptions. Some fantasy Authors actually take the bother to create their own universes. Name of the Wind and Stormlight Archive for example.

The movie is pretty shitty. Some of the actors plainly sound bored or sick of their lines, the CG orc bits are as cringey as watching minecraft animations, and the movie overall does a good bit of assuming you know and care about the world it takes place in

Strife Rixa The movie has bad pacing/editing and actors for the human characters are dull/lack enthusiasm most of the time. The CG for characters + mocap is probably the best you can get nowadays. World+Characters represent almost 100% what you can find in the games other than almost every pathetic video game adaption to date. And just like LOTR the movie assumes that you know the medium its based on. Better luck next time.

@@tommerker8063 is easy. the timeline is actually before the 1st game. hell even the 1st and 2nd game didn't explain what was really going on ether. so the movie has better explanation than the 1st 2 games. while the 3rd game actually connects with the movie. almost like the 1st and 2nd game didn't happened. but at lest you know the creatures that the orcs used to be allies with and the humans used to be allies with a few different elfs mostly. even if I haven't played the games or even heard of it. the only idea I pick up from the movie is. the orcs are trying to find a new home. but there new leader demon orc or just fel orc is just moving world to world to gain power rather give them what they truly want. but the green orcs are just to blind to realized why they never had a new home up untell almost the end of the movie. His reasons were because when Gul'dan opened the dark portal with all his sacrifices, Durotanspoke out against it. And as a result. Gul'dan had the frostwolves banished from the Horde. Later on, Durotan told Orgrim about his suspicions but on his way back, Gul'dan had assassins murder Durotan and Draka. And hearing this, Orgrim knew he had to act.

I agree, if they were Classic Doctor Who fans they'd be sinning the hell out of Back To The Future for ripping it off (the Flux Copacitor being a part of a time machine?), Stargate (aliens that took over the mind of a human being that fooled the Ancient Egyptians into believing they were gods), The Matrix (a hyper realistic micro universe/virtual reality people in the real world can enter that also stores information which is called "The Matrix"). My point is, aside from the fact that Doctor Who is probably the nerdiest show ever conceived, ideas that have been done before are EVERYWHERE but it depends on how good a spin on it that the filmmakers did. Warcraft, while I thought it was better than most were making out, did not. It kind of has the look and feel of a director passionate about the film he was working on but the studio executives mutated it because "oh WE know what gamers want! Haven't you seen what we've done with video game movies?!"

The relationships that were "introduced" were actually just characters made for the movie. In the past, novels have fleshed out the Orc side of the story well and there are more than enough characters for them (with even some big-name chieftains only having cameos without a single line); the humans, on the other hand, had only a handful of main characters in Warcraft 1. Lothar's son and sister were either never named or didn't exist, and they even gave King Wrynn a second child (not that she played any part, though).

He says "there was a time when we didn't know who our enemy was". He is referring to the burning legion. Who came to the orc shaman leaders as spiritual guides back in their planet draenor. And manipulated them to invade the human world azeroth.

The sad part is, even if you are a fan of the game and lore like me , this movie is still not for you; CGI is trash the story is NOT the same as warcraft at all(many character changes and story changes that were huge changes and it literally ruined me every wanting to watch it.gorona was mind controlled by chog'all and she is half orc half dreanie and she was magically aged, she also fell in love with medivh not lothar and yes this matters..the story was not even close to cannon and this movie being done by anyone but blizzard themselves was a dumb idea and a shit stain on the brand.

The Elves are different, the Orcs are very different. The magic and how it works and how powerfull it is is very different. And beyond that, and most importantly. The movie has a very different style to it than the LotR movies have. It's like saying The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan are trying to be the same thing. Sure, both play in WW2 and D-day is a huge part of both movies. But they are not the same movie and they are not trying to do the same thing. Same here. Sure. Both are set in a fantasy world with elves, orcs and magic. But both are trying to do something very different with that source material. Now don't get me wrong. Warcraft is far from a perfect movie. I agree whole heartedly that it could do a better job of explaining shit. I can understand that people think it feels rushed, it felt so for me as a WC-fan too. And yeah alot is thrown at you and I see it could get overwhelming. I got the details because I know the basic story, and I know the charachters. Yeah, it was 100% a film for fans of the franchise, rather than a film produced on its own merit. I don't think that's necessarily a *bad* thing (especially if you've got a fanbase as large as Warcraft's), but it's definitely worth noting and certainly affected how the film was received by non-fans.

Know what I hate about WoW? They stopped making Warcraft games. I never got to play Warcraft 4 because WoW was too lucrative.

Actually Guldan was covered WLoD. The 2016 Legions was the second one as the 1st version came out around 2003 or 4. Played from vanilla to WLoD when wife's health needs became more important.

The main problem with this movie is that it was basically built for the fans. Prettymuch everyone I know that knows the warcraft lore loved it, but the rest were lost. You have to have a decent understanding of the background before going into the movie. So yeah, to someone who only saw the movie? Must have been garbage. WarCraft 3 has it covered. the 1st and 2nd game didn't explain what was happening. while the movie actually did and it was at the beginning before the 1st game. if you start reading in WoW it well be almost as bad as Kingdom Hearts. both games were getting interesting. but they mess up at some point and mix in time travel to mess with your head even more. tell you that just for heads up.

What if they didn't? The movie needs to stand as a movie first than anything. Besides, Warcraft is hugly based on LOTR and D&D, from it's species to it's naming convetions. As a fan of the Warcraft franchise, it was an okay video game based movie. To anyone not familiar with the source material, yeah, its going to seem really awkward and confusing, and a big ripoff of other franchises.

What's original about an adaptation of a 22 year old videogame that was original an adaptation of the Warhammer tabletop game that they changed slightly when they lost the licence?

There was so much wrong with this movie but they decided to go the lazy route instead of naming actual sins in it.

This film has so much sin potential that it's pretty insulting the video just came down to "Look at me I know nothing about Warcraft, LOTR, or myths/legends". The concepts of ogres and imps (which inspired Tolkein's works) existed long before LOTR did. That, and the Orcs of Warcraft have nothing to do with the Orcs of Tolkein's universe, beyond the fact that they can fight.

@Angelique Uh, Tolkien didn't create modern Fantasy. He created a template for the west when it came to mythology, it's why LOTR & his other works have such an amazing prose and they read more like legends than novels. You can probably name on one hand the amount of popular Fantasy series who straight up ripped off LOTR, and Warcraft is not one of them. Keep trying to pretend like you know what you're talking about though.

A movie is supposed to stand on its own. You don't need to read thousands of dc or marvel comic issues to enjoy a movie from those two. The fact that the movie fails to make sense of this world for new people only shows how bad it is. Kiwa this movie makes perfect sense without Warcraft knowledge but if you know it then it will be better and have less possible plot holes just like dc and marvel. No one can make that many years of story in one movie and cover everything. Only reason people say the movie has so many holes is because people nowadays aren’t all that intelligent. The characters, locations, political intrigues, the conflict, nothing is explained in the movie itself. We follow 2-3 characters throughout it, but the viewer has no idea what is going on, or why should they care about anything that's happening. Who are the orcs? What are their goals? What is this fel? Why do they want to create this portal? Who is Lothar? Who is Khadgar? What is the guardian? What is that counsil? It's not about picking up some subtle queues, but the fact that the movie makes it impossible for new viewers to understand anything. Also, you calling out this channel out for "not knowing the lore" is proof enough of this. As i said, a movie should speak for itself, and he shouldn't have to learn years of ingame lore to be able to understand it. The fact that he wasn't able to, and that the content was so out of touch with the warcraft community, proves my point.

I think the argument might be that it's not practical to have a map on the ceiling rather than one on a parchment that you can read. I think you're right though that there's nothing wrong with having a map on the ceiling purely for art purposes rather than practical use. I guess what CinemaSins doesn't realise is that that was actually a map of the known world in WoW (that they knew at the time, they didn't know that the western continent of Kalimdor existed yet). So, it's kind of like having the map of the world, Sistine Chapel style, on the ceiling for artsy purposes.

It's not there to read it but as a convenient decoration, they certainly do not use it every day

Tolkien actually invented a lot. Much of the characters in LoTR are named after real myths, but they don't actually resemble those myths. Could the elves or orcs in LoTR really be said to resemble elves and orcs of folklore? Not really. He also pretty much pioneered the entire fantasy genre. Before him, hard as it is to believe, people just didn't write stories set in their own fictional world. They would be set in a version of our own reality.

JediSpectre117 Tolkien didn't take much from Norse mythology, mainly he took names that had nothing to do with his creations. For example he took the Norse name Orcus which was a evil vampire thing and used that name for orcs even though the two have little In common.

Though the reason for that is that the games (on which this movie is based on) borrowed a lot from Tolkien, even the RTS ones.

same can be said for todays stuff. Tolkiens orcs and orcs in many games/fantasy worlds today are not even close to the same.
