As someone who has been running for 8 years, my biggest tip/advice is that consistently is truly key (cliché but true). However, consistency and perfection are not the same thing, and it’s okay to rest/adjust your running schedule. Life stress, business, etc can all impact your running and that is completely okay. For example, if you’ve had a long and hard day and your body is physically rejecting your planned 10km or intervals, you’re going to feel way better if you go out for a short run (even 1km) than if you do nothing at all. In the end, running is truly seasonal; you may be dialed in with training for some periods and only doing casual short jogs in another. Embracing this seasonality makes it way more enjoyable and sustainable- running is a long game and over time you’ll find your own personal balance of consistency, discipline, and flexibility.

Thank you for pointing out the difference between consistency and perfection. Also the seasonality thing is so true, it's good to remember that there is a place and time for everything and that it's normal to not be at 100% all the time :)

Remember that at the start of the run (first 5-10 minutes) it can feel terrible and like you should totally give up running forever. It's your body adapting to the run. It took me 4 years to remember that! and my second tip, enjoy. It you enjoy, you'll keep doing it!

Hi Emily, I have just found and subscribed to your channel, honestly it's so nice to find a youtube channel about running that isn't either telling me how brilliant they are or going on and on and on about gear. I thought I was the only runner alive who only has one pair of trainers, and my little piece of advice, every once in a while go for a run but leave your watch at home, keep up the good work on this channel

Hi Emily. It was so nice to meet you and Josh at run club. You guys are awesome! My advice for others would be to keep it fun. You don't need to punish your body with every run. In fact, beginners should rarely do this. Mix up your routes, paces and distances. In tough times - remind yourself why you started this hobby in the first place.

As a perfectionist, running has been truly the one place where I celebrate my fails. You can always get better - whether that’s better pace, better efficiency, better distance, better feeling… it doesn’t matter!

I'm so happy I've found your channel. You're so relatable and after having what I feel is a bad run this morning seeing this video has just put this run in a different perspective. Thank you 🙏 I've only been running for 6 weeks and I love how it makes me feel which is why I'm trying to keep this as my 'why'.

Got a couple more tips to share if i could. "Comparison is the Thief of Joy" do not compare yourself to anyone else, we are all on different jouneys and it will demotivate you. And nicking this one from Ben and Mary Bridges, aka This Messy Happy whom i have met, "Find the Joy" ie: your reason for running, after all it's got to be enJoyable hasn't it.

After a few months consistently running, I realise how much I neglected strength & conditioning. I thought running was my leg day, but my knees feel far more stable after strength & conditioning work.

Great video. You already said this I think but my biggest tip is run hard enough to improve, and easy enough to recover.

100% agree that some runs feel like a significant effort just to complete 5k and others can feel easy even after 10k. I like the phrase "Just keep moving". After a year of running my pace has improved by 2 minutes per mile. My tip is that the right shoes are important. From experience my injuries came from running with shoes that did not work well with how my foot hits the ground. Love your videos!
