There are many different ways to change down the gears in a manual car, there is even a way to change gears without using the clutch. In this video I explain and demonstrate all the possible methods for changing to lower gears with the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

I had to learn rev match because my gearbox isnt in its best times anymore. As i want to downshift, lets say from 4th to 3rd at a bit over 30mph i cant put it into 3rd gear without either revmatching or getting slower. But things like this made me a better driver and i get many compliments for my driving even though i have less than 2 years of experience.

Mad respect for doing videos like this...! I've actually had a perfect chance to practice changing without the clutch once. The car was ready for scrapyard anyway and then the clutch gave up. I continued driving without it by turning the engine off at stops, getting it going in first using the starter motor and then continuing like shown in this video. I could practice going up and down all I wanted without worrying about the gearbox.

I' been in a similar situation with my motorbike when the clutch wouldn't work. I would push (while sitting on the bike) and starting at the same time, quite a challenge. You can't put it in neutral in between shifts so it's not that smooth but it worked. Shifting at low revs helped.

@@woutermollema Yes, pretty much all (as in I don't know of any but there's probably something obscure that does) motorcycles use a dogbox and you can freely shift up and down the gears with only a throttle blip or lift. The smoothness is entirely dependent on your timing of each input and slower is not smoother.

Double clutching has always confused me. Some people say it's quicker for over-taking. I just find rev matching up and you're good to go. Appreciate all the videos you do, and the abuse you put on your car(s) for the knowledge you give us. I'm not a beginner, but I still like the refreshers and your honestly just really entertaining.

Its not quicker but my car will literally not go in to 2nd gear unless the gear speed is matched pretty well. Because that gear was well abused by the last owner. They say you shouldn't need to do it but it definitely is easier on your transmission. its slower than normal shifting but transfers the wear from the synchros in your transmission to your clutch.

Double clutching is not necessarily quicker and isn't much of a benefit in normal driving if the synchronizers are in good shape, but it's much easier on the synchronizers if you are skipping gears while downshifting to a relatively low gear for your speed. The difference likely won't show up until you get to a higher mileage, but it still saves wear in the long run.

It's just a myth that "car guys" use after watching fast and furious to sound cool. It literally doesn't matter. I dont know if im remembering correctly, but double clutching was used for older cars to help with syncros. Dont have to worry about it as much in modern cars.

A couple notes: Downshifting without rev matching wears the clutch. Clutches are maintenance items, so it’s not terrible but not good. Shifting without the clutch wears the synchronizers. Synchronizers are not maintenance items, most shops will recommend to just replace the entire gearbox with a used one. This is considerably more expensive. I recommend learning heel-toe as soon as you’re comfortable with the pedals. In emergency situations you want to be in the right gear, and practicing heel-toe means you’re always in the right gear.

I always heard that since it is done smootly, you can do it and of course not using too high rpm, but yeah 2000/3000 rpm i think there is no problem to downshift.

@@paulklp8262 It may be becoming more standard for the limited number of manual transmission cars available now, I guess. My 2020 Civic Si doesn't have auto rev match but the 2022 and 2023 versions do. The Type R had it longer, but it's also a more expensive car.

Did my first lesson today, it went very well. I didn't stall even once because I religiously watched your videos. Instructor asked me multiple times if this really was my first lesson, and said that I was a fast learner but imo that's not the case, its just that I basically knew everything I had to do before getting on that seat. My friend has an old Ford Escort and he did that, changing gears without the clutch method. The reason was, the clutch cable had broken. But we had a problem that the car could not stop, otherwise, we needed to push it. It happened twice, so we pushed it. Thank you very much for the tips Richard Instructor, nice video!

Learn to Blip. I learned it the first 6 months of driving because I love driving. And driving smooth as possible while keeping a good pace is something else for you and the passengers. Im still a newbie but it improved my driving allot.

Dude this video (and more generally this whole channel) is just perfect. I just started my driving lessons and at first I was very confused as to why the car would be jerky. Understanding the mechanisms that happen behind the transmission made me literally nerd out on everything I could find for having this perfect smooth transition. I have even memorized the gear ratios for the car I'm driving since I'm too inexperienced to get a "feel" like you guys 😂. But it's sooo interesting and you make it so easy to follow man. Using the throttle to boost the revs with the heel and toe method when dropping gears is something I taught myself from "feel", when I wanted to maintain speed or slow more softly when I have someone driving too close and I'm coming to a junction or roundabout. Gets my car into the lower gear nice and early, I can put my brake lights on earlier too, and then make a nice smooth and controlled slow down. Didn't know there was a name for it though, I'd heard it before but never looked into it before. Great video, lots of useful info!

Last weekend i drove to my grandma's house and there were some uphills there, i used the gas to revmatch while downshifting to keep my car going uphill. Smooth downshift everytime, BEST SENSATION EVER

Great video, very informative. Really good to see pedal camera alongside cabin and dash views. Probably also worth noting that some modern cars have rev hold / rev match assist in the ECU, for those who want to blip shift or heel and toe. Doesn't do it if you slide out of gear and only use the clutch so it's aware of throttle input mid-shift (and no, it's not just flywheel inertia for those wondering!) For example my Fiesta ST does this, as does the RS. Makes you feel like a hero and helps reduce drivetrain wear, happy days.

Awesome to see a driving instructor know more than the standard set of tricks. Clutchless out of gear can be done without any (additional) wear if done correctly. (done this for +35000km on somewhat faster cars)

I started driving manual years ago for work as I drive/drive cars for a living. Now my daily is a manual and I absolutely love it. Learned every way to downshift, including double clutch downshifting and heel toe. There is nothing more satisfying than double clutch downshifting and heel toe downshifting coming to a light to wait for it to turn green or to overtake traffic. The more you do it, and practice the better you get at it. And once you get those super smooth rev match transitions, I feel like there’s pretty much no better feeling driving a car than knowing you’re just getting better and better. Feelings you could just not get driving an automatic, and I love that I’ve gotten to experience it before they maybe go away soon.

pretty much all truckers float gears, the gearbox is meant for it. the synchronizers are much stronger in semi gearboxes, as opposed to regular gearboxes

Wow! So many ways to downshift. Tried rev matching method by giving gas but either its too less or too much resulting in jerk. Double declutch, even watching you do it makes me nervous. You're the best instructor I've ever come across in KZfaq. Thank you Sir.

Double clutching is not that hard. If you practice building the muscle memory with the engine off you can get it. What is hard though is heel and toe rev matching. I can't do it yet. I end up braking really hard when I try.

@@geralt36 Heel and toe is harder in some cars, it depends on pedal position and also how much play there is in the pedal. I drive an old car so the first bit of the brake does nothing, so I can push it down enough to heel and toe it relatively easy. Don't buy cars that don't allow you to do heel toe! They're clearly made for people that don't care about driving smooth.

@@15justt Although I can't heel and toe at least in my car. I still manage to make the downshifts fairly smooth while braking. I brake, shift down and when I'm ready to accelerate again I rev and then let out the clutch. Probably not as quick as a proper heel and toe but quicker than letting out the clutch slowly and good enough for normal daily driving.

Hey, hi! Holding on the clutch on the bite point used to be taught in driving schools in France for saving brakes (or brake harder) when downhill (as of 2019, when my sister got hers, but it could be because she got it in the army). I can for example use it on my 2001 Twingo I, but I couldn't replicate it on a recent Skoda Fabia rental (and never learned it during my driving lessons and exam on a Clio IV last year). We call it "frein moteur" ("engine brake") and your video makes me realise that because I think of it as a braking method, it's pretty common for me to downshift during those as I go slower (I have to listen to the engine carefully as the Twingo lacks a rev count on the dashboard, just speed, clock and petrol tank level and a button to shift from time to mileage)

this is really good timing, im in canada and bought my first manual (we dont need a special permit or anything on our license to drive a manual on the streets here) and it was pretty easy learning the basics of driving a manual, but downshifting is where i havent been very smooth. 2nd gear has been rough, i learned on my own that i could use the clutch to slowly get into 2nd but i was worried that i would be damaging the gearbox/clutch. my goal is to be able to rev match and get into lower gears a little quicker. thank you for all your videos!

I'm a 55 year old American who started driving manual 3 months ago. I inherited a sports car when my husband passed away last year. People in North America don't understand the challenges of learning to drive manual. I put student driver magnets on my car, and 99% of drivers stayed away from me - especially on hills. These videos have helped so much I took the magnets off a few weeks ago.

⁠@@PividolUK for one. They put the restriction on your license also if you transfer a DL from US/CA unless you can prove you passed a road test previously in a manual. US/CA DLs can have that restriction as well, though that’s normally in the case of someone missing a limb or who uses a prosthetic. One state I know has a code that means a driver must have at least one of an assistive device (eg a spinner knob, pedal extender, alternate side signals), a prosthetic, or automatic only.

These videos are very useful. I haven't started driving on the road yet because I'm underage but I drive on track sometimes. I learnt to heel-and-toe from this channel. I can now change down more confidently than a driver I compete with who has been driving on the road for over 40 years and I've been driving for under a year with probably under 20 hours of experience because I can't use the road

The "Double De clutch" is what just about all American lorries (semi truck) require when shifting as they have non synced transmissions. We call it double clutching. But most truckers that have the experience rev match every year except 1st or reverse

I'm teaching myself to drive stick in the 97 F150 I inherited and I just started practicing downshifting and rev-matching. This is very helpful, thanks! It is more difficult learning in this truck though, because it only has a speedometer... no idea why they don't include a tach in this trim, it's an XL trim, maybe it was optional, idk. Transmission also needs to be rebuilt, I think the 2nd gear synchro is pretty much gone lol.

nice to see you show the no clutch method i ran an old cordoba with a wearng clutch so i used it without it for 4 years! =first excluded. unless on a downhill- in the end i scrapped it due to a head gasket, and the gearbox was still working fine

And eventually i would like to move towards heel/toe downshifting even though my throttle and brake pedal arent on the same plane. Thank you for your videos. You gave me so much confidence to face the driving practicals, and I passed at the first attempt. Before seeing your videos, I had seenso many other videos that ended up convincing me that I was never ever going to pass at the first, second or even third attempt, even though I have been driving for over 15 years in my country. Well, I just did me, not too careful, just drove as though the examiner wasn't in the car. Got my full license!

I've been driving now for about 4 years and learned to heel-toe almost as soon as I got my first car. Learned on my own by trial and error from watching videos, and haven't really had issues downshifting since I've gotten it down, really the only thing that sometimes gets me is when braking gently, accidentally pressing harder on the brake pedal as well when blipping the gas, but again, with lots of practice and time these things happen a lot less often. I also drive truck and so as I learned to float gears in a semi I applied that to driving my car as well. I don't do it all the time but this helps when I'm eating and driving and need to change gears but my left hand is busy with food. I steer with my knee shift with my right hand and use my right foot for heel-toe and shift without the clutch lol

Thanks for the video - since driving school I have been relying on synchronizers only, however after some time I started noticing the jerking (I don't know if I am such a bad driver, but my VW polo 1.4 from 2010 seems to be soo jerky now I started noticing it) so I started bliping the gas as I read somwhere about rev matching, but this guide with all the ways to shift at one place was what I really needed

prior to actually driving a real manual car, i used to watch your videos and i remember my instructor saying when i drove for the first time " i don't believe this is your first-time driving " you are driving as if you have been driving for a long time". the second time was with a Scania truck, one of those 320 or more series from work, the driver responsible for it didn't want to give me drive because he was afraid i would damage it. i too wasn't sure, but from watching your videos prior, i believed. i drove it to all low range gears until stopping . came in the morning and he said w that, he has given people before, but they weren't as confident and drive through changing gears smoothly than i did . from that time have never looked back. thank you 🥰

For downshifting I'll either blip or be gentle and learn heel toe later down the line as im still perfecting heel toe on sim. One thing that's helped me is learn it in a sim, then apply it in rl and understand that there are more effects so it's still good to do research and learn in rl.

About that revmatching part. There is a technique I learned where you do the same thing as you mention in the video but instead of puting in the gear quickly you apply a moderate pressure to the gear you want to change and if the revs match the gear does go in without grinding. That technique is easy to learn and you don't have to worry about the wear of the gears.

Nicely explained. I used to show advanced drivers the clutchless gear change then allow them to try. I did the gear change with the tip of my finger to show how easily the lever could move. To select neutral position I gently push the lever with one finger towards neutral whilst still accelerating lightly, the lever will not move at this point, then off the gas, as the engine drive relaxes the lever slips into neutral. Next position the lever for the next gear, over rev it and then with tips of finger gently push towards 2nd, as the revs drop and match it slips in very easily. As mentioned, finger tips used only to emphasize how easy gears slip in, the synchromesh does the work. The advantage also of using tips of fingers is if you get the timing wrong there wont be a big crunch, let go, still in neutral and either use clutch or rev again and give it another go. Had a clutch cable break on me once, drove home using all 5 gears. Stopping is easy, starting not so, just put it in 1st and turn the key, jerky but works.

Thank you for the video I got my learners licence and stopped driving because of the pressure put on me because the way I was taught was to “just do it” and tomorrow I’m going to start trying again seeing as it’s almost been a year and I need to be driving in a month or two if I want to graduate school. This video made me more comfortable and confident with shifting down and all the other videos have majorly helped me.

Thanks for the lesson and I usually over bilp the gas on netural when doing double de-clutch and then just enter to lower gear at suitable rev speed without bilpping, which I think is an easier to do the double de-clutch.

Idk why I'm even watching the video TBH. I've been driving for barely a year and I've forced myself to learn everything done here months ago. Just in case I ever need them... And it's a good knowledge to have. I own a 2003 Fiesta (the 1.4) and I do need to double clutch for 2nd and 1st gear. For the other gears I either throttle blip or heel and toe on downshifts. So yeh lol, good to have learnt those. I guess I'm here stuck watching you is because you're good at explaining stuff and I enjoy this straight to the point video format? Lol, Keep it up.

Good video. I definitely recommend the double de-clutch method regardless. It's the ultimate way to rev match and I still find myself using this method even on a brand new manual car; you can extend the life of your gearbox/synchros significantly. So as the video notes (for a downshift), shift to neutral first, let up the clutch, rev the engine (in neutral with the clutch pedal up), and then clutch in and shift. This will not only give you the smoothness but it will also save wear on the gearbox synchros. The key is revving with the clutch pedal up (and gear lever in neutral). By revving with the clutch up and gear in neutral, you're also spinning up the gearbox to the new RPMs, thus saving your synchros (basically means they do very little work and saves a lot of synchro wear). This method will also be a Godsend if your synchros are worn to the point they are no longer able to synchronise the gearbox (read: avoids gear crunching). If you do the double de-clutch quickly enough, you won't need to blip the throttle the 2nd time. Once you master double de-clutch method, you can actually go to 1st gear at speed (within reason) as well. You will need to follow the instructions above and rev the engine to the near-perfect RPMs, and if you've done it right, 1st will engage without issue and smoothly even when letting out the clutch. When up-shifting and doing a double de-clutch: clutch in, go to neutral, clutch out very briefly (to capture the reducing revs and transferring them to the gearbox), then clutch in and shift. Whether up-shifting or downshifting, you will know if you've done the double de-clutch perfectly, because when you move the gear lever will literally slot into place with nary any resistance whatsoever. That indicates you have successfully synchronised the gearbox yourself, rather than relying on the gearbox synchronisers. Cheers

Lovely video, sums up probably all there is to know about downshifting. Personally I hardly ever downshift with gas to rev match (blip or hold), I rather downshift to slow down with engine braking. When overtaking I rather use the extra power of the "jolt" to gain more speed - weak car issues I suppose. One note though - first gear in diesel cars has much larger range than in petrol cars. I can go up to 30 km/h on first gear before casually shifting to second. I usually stay in first gear when slowly driving in a traffic jam, while in a petrol car I'd stay in second gear.

passed my driving test a few days ago 2nd time with 4 minors, mainly because of stress 😅, and on my first time driving the family car the brakes failed but luckily I've seen your vid about the brakes which I've thought I'd never need 😆 knowledge is a blessing, stopped without a hitch, my family didn't even notice till I told them later on since there was no need to tell them considering they'd panic, for a new driver it was quite the experience lol, keep up the good work, you're saving lives

Regarding clutchless gear changing, I've done it a lot, and it's fun. After a while, you get really used to it and you almost never grind it. Btw, I had to drive a car for 2 days without a clutch at all (cylinder failed, it couldn't be decoupled). I had no idea that the syncro of 1st gear can function as a clutch for setting in motion, by slowly pushing it into gear.

I recently passed my driving test in Pakistan. Although I watched few videos which were very specific to Pakistan's driving test method (basically driving front and back in L shape), but most of the techniques I learned from your videos. Interestingly, on the test day, they had changed the testing method and I had to drive through a route (no L shape anymore). So thanks to you for your informative videos that helped me pass my test.

@@ConquerDriving Update: I havnt tried these versions,obviously haha but ive driven more manual and feel alot more confident. the hardest part about being a new driver is changing car, A new car almost drives like an automatic, its SUPER easy to clutch and drive ,but ive mostly driven older cars now where the gas pedal is incredibly sensitive and the clutch bitepoint have always been different, this as a new driver is very scary haha, But once you calm down and just get out of first gear its smooth sailing! starting a car and get it moving is always terrifying but when its going the rest of the gearchanges are super easy :) This said, my own car will be a automatic since i travel a bit for work haha.

Ah, what a great video. Fun fact, for the big trucks (Lorry to the rest of the world), these are still non-syncronized transmissions, which means the double de-clutch is still standard in order to drive it. The next one, which was named as "without clutch", is commonly known amongst drivers of the lorry as "floating" or "rowing", and is also a common practice after having some time behind the wheel, both in shifting up and down.
