Hey all, I just got the amp and these are first impressions which are always subject to change and especially embarrasing a year later lol Either way, it's an honest take and I hope it helps.

I said the same thing to Brian Wampler on his SLO-30 demo - it’s great to hear an overview of a high gain amp that isn’t just 10 minutes of chugga chugga drop C tuning, so thank you for that, it’s helpful to be able to hear the full range of what the amp can offer. To my ears it sounds like a really great and affordable way in to 5150 tones. The 5150 Stealth was Ed’s last iteration of his range of amps, so in terms of future videos a comparison between the Stealth and the Iconic would be cool to hear (if you have the time and inclination!) with an SM57 on that cab. Thanks again for the demo :-)

I never understood why the 5150 was designed as a super high gain amp. Here on YT EVH fans seem to be using something else, while these are used for the sound you mentioned. I'm not a fan of the drop chug stuff. It all sounds the same to me, and I don't care for the message in it.

You did a great review of this amp and actually made it sound better then most videos I've seen on this amp. What you refer to as cold is what I think I don't like about this amp. Good point on the resonance control. Many players use it as a bass boost, but really, Ed and James originally intended it as a way to "tune" the Amp to the cabinet/speaker combo being used which was a great idea. On my old blockletter, I used various cabs....The 5150 with Sheffields, a Hiwatt with Fanes, and Marshalls with Celestions, and I was always able to get the tone I wanted. The reverb sounds terrible imo. But great video, and it's true. When I was a kid the gain knob would be on 10. With age I have dialed it way down and I play down tuned metal. Getting that tight sound and being able to hear the strings is more important than fuzzy chugs. Especially with 7 strings.
@jannevaatainen2 жыл бұрын
Also really depends on the music. Reduce the gain on At The Gates' "Slaughter Of The Soul" and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work so well. But generally yes, people should at least try to use less gain, especially when recording.

I would suggest maybe a Friedman BE100 that if you get lucky you can find for about $2600 used. Honestly, I wish there were lower cost options that sounded great but it’s just not out there. It’s hard to find a modern piece of gear that has that same fidelity as the vintage stuff but also packs enough gain for hard rock.

I really wish they would just put a twin clean circuit or something. I get that “no one buys a 5150 for cleans” but ffs it’s a fender amp. Really don’t need a crap clean channel and 3 dirt options. Honestly from what I’ve heard the crunch channel is enough gain for my needs.

Nice in-the-room demo! And tuned to normal tuning! I think it sounds like a perfect '80's grind amp. NOT a good modern metal chug amp like the other 5150's. Of course, that cold feel is probably from the solid state components instead of a V1 12AX7. Compared to a DSL (for example), it seems to get nicer gain and tighter low end, which is cool.

Sounds great but usely when you have the reverb up to high in an minimum space through recording it comes off to strong and has to much trail off at the end it takes away from the actual tone of the amp you could probably set it at two or three and your recordings live would probably come out better when demonstrating a product get your jeans and people don't normally want to hear how you like it so you need to play with the reverb at low settings and high settings to give people an idea of what the range of the reverb is I'm sure it has a great trail off range we can hear that but we don't hear it at lower settings but yeah it's how you want to come across to the public I guess if trying to pitch an amp sale 🤷👍
