EVH 5150III EL34 50watt Repair and Playtest

Here we have a poorly 5150iii that needs a little love. It was blowing fuses and show how to fix the problem on this one
One thing not mentioned here, but in a previous video was that this came to me wired for 230v.In the UK we tend to have closer to 240v coming out of our sockets. So the conversion was done too.

Awesome!! an electronics tech who can play guitar quite well!!! Awesome upgrade!! How sad that to save pennies they use the bare minimum screen grid resistors to get by. Thanks for showing us how to repair these amps because they seem to have a history of blowing up.

A BIG shout out for the info-vid. The repair was clean and I could almost smell the rosin flux. I was blessed in my military training, 2m Micro/Mini Repair tech qual....LONG EXPIRED THOUGH... LoL. Bring back memories of the old repair shop aboard a 378 foot USCG Cutter, (Jarvis-WHEC-725). Good work on this repair buddy ! Bravo Zulu.

Fantastic video and that is worrysome about the proximity factor. Two quick topics I'd love to hear from you about - 1. Do you recommend upgrading to the 5W1KJ resistors regardless of any issues? 2. Since the power tube PCB is the same as on the 6L6 models, is the only difference the setting of the bias pot? Ultimately, if you lowered the bias, could you run the amp with 6L6s or 5881s? Thanks!

I would recommend upgrading and floating the grid resistors. Also the bias resistor will be a different value to accommodate the EL34’s. You could change it to something that would cover both. Not ideal though.

Great video and I recently enough picked up a 5150 el34 myself a few months ago . But recently the fuse cap came off without me noticing and just wondered if you knew what type of fuse holder and cap was? And info would be greatly appreciated

Great playing, you obviously really know your stuff so I wonder if you can point me in the right direction? I bought a “B” stock EVH5150iii EL34 2x12 combo and after using it twice I lost all gain on the red channel (sounds like an acoustic, no drive). So I put new pre amp valves in V1,V2,V3 & V4 that supply channel 3, but still no change. Channel 1 & 2 work fine so I’m guessing it’s not the power tubes? I did swap a pre amp valve from V5 to V9 the phase splitter but still no change. I’m losing the will to live now and just want to be able to use the red channel which is the main reason I got it. Any advice will be appreciated….Help!!!

It may be a fault in the one of the switching relays. Give fender a call, or ask around for a good tech

Amazing sound. Thanks! I was wondering, when you started playing the BLUE channel at minute 17:00 through about minute 23:40 had you already lifted one leg of the C137 capacitor or is that tone with the capacitor fully in place? Thanks!

Do you only need to change the screen resistors on these to run EL34's? I'm noticing that all the components on that board you worked on has the same components as the 6L6 board... Of course, there doesn't seem to be any schematic available out there for the EL34 board..

Pretty much, also the bias section iirc has a resistor change too. Grab the schematics, take your time and compare.

what Marshall cabinet were you using? vintage 30's? Or were you going direct out from Suhr reactive load to your computer and monitors? Also 32 ma is what you biased it to? Thanks

When this happened did your app still power on and play and would just make high pitch squealing sounds?

Hey! I have had this amp for around 3 years but in the last few months, the clean channel has started breaking up even at low gain settings. Any ideas what might have caused that? It used to be a crystal clean channel but now it sounds horrible. Do you reckon it needs new valves? Thanks in advance.

That could be a valve, just buy one 12ax7 and swap one at a time to see if it makes a difference

I have a 50 watt EVH Stealth 6L6. I was playing on the crunch channel and there was a gradual volume drop that ended with the channel being super quiet even when cranked. I checked the other channels and the clean channel was also super quiet but the lead channel still worked fine and had full volume. I bought some JJ preamp tubes and checked them. V1 was microphonic when tapped with a pencil so I replaced it but the problem was still there. I replaced the V5 and V6 preamp tubes as they only affect the clean and crunch channels but the problem was still there. I didn't check V2, V3 and V4 as they only affect the lead channel. Is it possible I burned out something (ie. diode or capacitor) on the circuit board from playing with the microphonic V1 preamp tube over a period iof time? any advice would be appreciated.

It’s always worth trying the rest of the tubes. It’s a simple test. Also is it the same with the Footswitch connected or disconnected? It’s possible a component has decided to give up.

@@RDamps Yes I removed the footswitch and the still no clean or crunch channel. I took it to my local shop and they tested all the tubes including power tubes and the problem is still there. I am taking it to a dedicated tube amp repair shop this week. It must be something on the circuit board.

The preamp tubes a few of the caps have some sponge inside I’m assuming for micro phonics do you know which tubes those caps go to?

Thanks great post! Do you think the mod is practically "mandatory" with this cuircut to bring it to life or just if you want more gain? I traditionally prefer a 2204 which is more than enough for me (metal for me stops at about Pantera & Slayer). Think I'd benefit from it if I only play classic Priest. Thin Lizzy, Sabbath, UFO. Maiden, etc, or should I just leave it well enough alone? Maybe I should ask if the mod will improve touch responsiveness/articulation/dynamics? Thanks in advance and love your channels content.

I have one and like it a lot, and the blue channel gets me what I want boosted, but I am finding the red channel almost too tight/compressed. I play metal, but mostly 90s-style doom, so I need gain/saturation, but not such insane amounts of compression/tightness. Any advice on how to make the Red channel slightly more "open" sounding?

Try a lower gain preamp tube in the red ch. circuit

Is your blue channel volume louder then the red channel? for some reason my blue channel when volume is down low and blue and red the blue channel is way louder not sure if this a issue or its because it has Kt77 tubes or what. I have a 50W stealth also and the blue channel on that one is not as loud as the el34 blue channel if the are both on the same Volume if you understood what i said

Hey man! Been trying to find replacement fuses for my EVH 5150 EL34 50watt but I can’t seem to find anything online on what type of fuse to get and what kind of fuse holder I need to get. My amp does not have a fuse or the cap that holds it. Let me know thanks!

It is such a shame that amps are built like this today. Sockets and Potentiometers mounted to the PCB , cheap ribbon cables and the list goes on...This garbage built now is only made "Good Enough" to get it through the warranty period and in no way built to last....

It is, I have nothing against PCB amps and have no issue working on them. But like anything there are good and bad ones. As you say you can see the cost cutting on these which is a shame, but it’s built in Mexico so costs more. Take a look at JetCity built in China but to a much higher spec. Lovely PCB’s all 1% tolerance high quality components for half the ticket price.

@@RDamps I thank You for the info. Have you worked on any of the newer VOX AC15 C2 (two green backs)? Was wanting one of those BUT if it's built anything like my DSL 40C I will pass LOL! Do not get me wrong as I love the way it sounds but it is built like cheap junk! Could Marshall find anything cheaper than those plastic craptastic potentiometers? Total Garbage... Just was wondering your experience with the newer VOX stuff as I love how it sounds and has a nice spring reverb tank and tremolo but if it's the same build quality as my DSL I have no clue? I do not care if it's made in China as they are just as capable of making a quality product as the next guy as I am sure it's comes down to how (Insert brand Name Company Here) specs said product out. I get the fact that "You Get What You Pay For" But I am curious on how much more cost would be involved with using something like CTS Pots mounted to the chassis and some good ceramic Tube Sockets "Or Valve" sockets mounted to the chassis as well with no cheap ribbon cables on a mass produced scale? If it's something like 150-200 dollars or Euros more I would gladly pay it but I could and probably be far off on the difference?

The EL34 was known for having the worst blue channel out of all the models. Am I right in saying that the c127 mod is basically what was released as the Stealth?

Sir, I need help ! My red channel on a EVH, 5150 III, 6l6 is dead, or....not dead but has got low volume, and no distrotion. EVH donet even answare my mails, to support me. the amp is used onsly 25 hours "! Thomann dont take it back, and is not even willing to taek it for a payed reapir.......this shop is not what it used to be ! I am very dissapolinted. Can you telle me where you dound this sceme ? and som tips on how to start, I have to try to repair it myself, with som soldering. I can not afford to send it to a tech, too expanisve here In Norway ! Wti a VOltmeter I can probably find somthing and order some parts......Do you know ewhere to find parts for this amp ?
