EVH EL34 100 vs EVH Stealth - The Definitive Showdown

The 2 best EVH amps go head to head in full mixes and isolated riffs. They will be dialed in exactly the same and compared to each other with and with as overdrive pedal. The overdrive I'll be using is the Mud Killer. I will compare all 3 channels of these amps. With my KHE Amp Switcher, I will instantly switch back & forth between the EVH EL34 100 & the EVH Stealth 100.
Signal chain - Guitar into Line 6 Helix (via 4 cable method) helix to KHE Amp & FX Switcher then to amps & cabs.
Overdrive pedal - Mud Killer
FX - Line 6 Helix
Cab(s) Mesa Boogie 212 with v30's & Zilla Fatboy 212 with DV-77 & V30 and the Ox Box.
Mics - (Mesa cab) Royer 121 & shure sm57 (Zilla) i5 & 421

For my own comparison 6l6 9:30 24:20 55:00 and EL34 16:47 54:04 57:06 the solo on the (EL34 19:41) (stealth 10:21 12:11 27:33) **Red channel** ( EL34 38:01 38:37 39:01 Stealth 38:25 38:47 39:12) RED LEAD (el34 43:20 44:03 Stealth 43:42 44:17) with all of that, and this is coming from a Metal guitarist...there is something to that EL34 amp when playing lead (EL34 1:07:53 vs stealth 1:02:46 ) The El34 sustains a lot more in those comparisons and the harmonics on the El34 are incredible in those last 2 comparisons. But there was more going on in the Stealth mi x example. I would say for a pure metal/Metal player get the Stealth, and if you are a rock/Metal player get the El34 and slam it with a pedal and you'll be so close it won't matter but you will have the pure liquid tone of the EL34 along with an incredible clean tone.

This was a great livestream and both of you sounded great through either EVH. Honestly I think both amps are great. Also I love TJ’s music. Nevermore was one of my favorite bands and I’m a fan of Jeff Loomis. TJ’s music and playing definitely reminds me of that. I think I even heard the Psalm of Lydia riff at one point! I definitely like it when you have livestreams like this, very cool and feels like a TV show for guitarists. 👍🏻🤟🏻😊

For me between the playing and the tones are just great, both you guys sound great. I do own both, but my EL 34 is a 50 watt,they both are worth the every penny I paid ( luckily I bought them before the insane used prices we see today). Hell my Peavy 5015 still holds up. And that mud killer is such a great pedal. I use it on my rockerverb and turn it to nearly all the way to skinny and it can tighten it up pretty good. I don't know if you have tried the peppers dirty tree? It's a pretty brutal pedal on my revv generator 120. But as always great show brother.

On the Peavey, I agree. Ed wanted crunch channel to be akin to his Marshall at the time. The 5153s moved beyond that. I have a mint US 6505+ that I like for what it is. But holding out to see what MT-100 may bring.

you should do a battle between the stealth and savage! ive already got the stealth 50.... i was greatly considering the savage but... damn you got me wanting the stealth 100!

THE STEALTH SOUNDED A BIT MORE COMPRESSED AND LESS BRIGHT THE EL34 SOUNDED BRIGHTER WITH MORE TONALITY AND LESS CLAMPED DOWN.

I’ve played both 50w versions, and in the room the 6L6 was murderous compared to the EL34 on CH3……but in all video examples I’ve ever watched 50 or 100w, the EL34 versions seem to always stand out better in the mix. There also seems to be a clear trade off with rhythm vs lead playing. EL34 for the leads & 6L6 for the chugs seems to be the formula.

I have both, the differences on my two are so subtle, you can dial them in to be very very close, feel is the same to me on both, most of the tone etc on these heads comes from the pre-amp section You can't go wrong with either one :)

I just ordered the 100 watt EL34 as I didn't like the clean on the 100 watt stealth. What I hate is ear splitting high end on high gain amps. Does the EL34 have this (one review said it hurt the ears so that got me worried) or is it smooth and pleasant?

@@travis3656 As I stated my two head's are not that far apart. the EL34 does not have unruly high end, I find you have to dial in a fair bit of high end with them, so if it's not to your taste it would be easy to keep that dialed back

@@thehoppo Awesome. Thank you for this information. I really liked the Stealth but couldn't deal with the lack of a clean channel and it seemed to have a harshness to the highs. Sounds like the EL34 voicing will be a better fit.

Trying to decide which one I'm going to buy everyone says the stealth but my rhythm playing I'm hitting a lot of individual notes. So clarity is the goal I do play clean stuff also with delay and reverb. Others say the EL34 if you play clean as well?

That was awesome. Both of you were rippin' those amps. I am definitely in the market for an EVH Stealth and although the 100 is badass it might be a little too much for a hobbyist like me. I remember you saying there was a difference between the 50 and 100 watt, but is it a major difference or are these still pretty comparable to each other? Thanks.

Thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed the episode. I think you would like either one of the Stealth versions. The 50 sounds great. The 100 is fuller and has a better feel. It takes a boost a bit better as well (it doesn't thin out) The red channel on the 100 is the best high gain channel I've ever played. Again, the 50 is still a great choice

Agree with J, I have both the 50 and 100 they are very different in my opinion blue brighter on fifty but heavy, 100 is just the greatest …best amp I’ve ever owned and I have em all, …well not really I was gonna selll my 50 but decided the differences warrant keeping the 50 the both are just amazing

They're both "Stealth" heads. Just different power tubes.. BTW, am I the only person who gets frustrated when people type "5153" instead of "5150III"? I also feel like I'm the only person who uses the Red channel for rhythm..

Hey man. I’ve been following the channel for a few weeks now and find your videos really informative, especially since I got my EVH stealth 100. I was wondering what tubes you are using in your amp, and also your EL34 version. Im looking into getting the EL34 100w since I like my stealth so much. Thanks! 🤘🏻

Thank you so much for commenting. I'm so glad you're enjoying the channel. All the tubes in both of my EVH amplifiers are stock. I'm out of town right now so I can't double check the brand of the tubes, sorry. You're gonna love the EL34 as well. What a great amplifier. Have you tried the Easter eggs yet?

@@TONEWARSgearshow awesome. Thanks! I got my 100 stealth second hand and the bias was set really cold, 94mv, I didn’t like the sound I was getting from it then I checked the bias and seen that. I want to replace the tubes with a matched set because I’m not sure if the JJs that are in there now are matched. There from tube depot. And I haven’t I am today when I get home tho!!

I have the 100S n an early 6L6 that I had modded to the concentric pots... I was hoping this would cure my EL34 gas! Thanks for nothing! 😉😉 Great playing n tunes!

Haha you're welcome! Both the EL34 100 and the Stealth 100 will be a step for you. I liked the 6l6, but it was a bit round and the blue channel was not aggressive enough and lacked the gain structure I look for.

I have the stealth 50 watt and after watching this video I'm strongly considering selling that 50 w for. I was strongly considering going with a profiling set up like a quad cortex... I don't know brother I think you might have me sold on the 100 w stealth. I don't play lead at all, I'm all about the chugs

what is the diferen in tone between the EVH 5150III 100S 100-watt Tube Head - Black Stealth and the EVH 5150III 100S 100-watt Tube Head ivory,i notice in the stealth,there is in the rear panel the bias meter,and three separate resonance knobs,but do they sound the same,or they have diferent voicing

No overdrive over KZfaq the EL34 sounded thinner than the Stealth. The Stealth is the clearly the better amp. Stealth 100 watts is definitely my next amp since I already have a JVM410H with EL34. Good job with all you video's, they are really good and informative.

Stealth 100 man! I think it's more of a circuit difference, not as much the power tubes. But they still make a difference! Would love to hear his playing thru the Engl Savage, Invader or Fireball.

I have a stealth and el34 in my Sweetwater cart right now. Somehow the stealth is $200 cheaper. Do these amps compliment each other playing together? Decisions...Decisions

They are super close when it comes to tone and feel. Honestly, in a blind test, I don't think I could tell the difference between them

I'm surprised s toumuch prefer the regular Stealrh over the EL34. I wish I coild play both. I like a lot of texture, thickness and chew with a softer top. I don't like a real crisp top end on gain. Personal preference I know.

I can't believe all the talk about"peavey amps" 😂😂. Kyle just did a video with a crate blue voodoo and it sounded better than any peavey amp I've ever heard before.i am also a victim of the peavey hype and I bought a USA made 6505+ and I hated everything about it.i just wish I had the money to pack the amp full of tannerite and blown it to smitherines.instead I sold it after having it for a 6 months for half what I paid for it cause nobody wanted it.i have a pooer friend that has a 6505 and he is a huge Metallica fan but he is tone deaf,he says he loves his 6505 but he fails to get a good Metallica sound out of the amp 😂😂.you can't fix stupid.peaveys sound like peavey's and the don't sound like anything other than peavey's.sorry Jerrod but I just had to get this off my chest.

The hype around the pv5150 and 6505 is the fact that they record very well. I've owned several of them and I think in person they sound like shit. They also mix very well with the band in live. Since I don't tour or record the 6505 is a terrible amp for me.
