Evolving Magikarp Then vs Now - A Pokémon Animation

A visual demonstration of how insanely difficult gen 8 is to play through.
I know it's not the most comedic of animations, but I learned a ton by making it. A few of the panning shots were my first time using frame interpolation, the Rock Tunnel scene was my first go at lighting effects, and the scene of Red's party was my first time having different layers on different animation loops. And it was super fun to make. I'd say it was worth it!
Oh and some of the sound effects are out of sync with the visuals but this thing took 6 hours to render so I'm not gonna fix them. soz m8

Despite the fact that I could do this with my pokemon in my copy of Sword, I never do. Never even really give them rare candies. In games that are gen 4 plus, I usually start out with a Level 1 Riolu and a handful of other level 1 pokemon of my choosing that I trade over in eggs at the start of the game from the counterpart game or from a friend's game and take that Riolu and the other pokemon and train them up from level 1 to 100 and evolve them the hard way. And through doing this, I always get super attached to my pokemon. I don't breed or train for specific stats or hunt/breed for shinies. Why? I simply don't care to. I don't do competitive either, so there's no real point for me to. And I don't care about rarity or whatever, and I don't even really brag about my pokemon or show them off. I just play to have fun, and end up getting attached to my pokemon like they're my children. They make me proud even if they aren't the strongest and are far from perfect. It's really worth it to take the long route and go the extra mile, not because of better stats or anything like that, but because you get attached to your team, and you begin to truly understand your team as well. Personally I think it's more fun and more rewarding to do stuff the long way.

It’s one of the strongest evolutions in earlier games so forcing the player to basically cripple themselves to get it make sense. Also from a lore standpoint it makes sense cause by that point the bond between you and your magikarp would be so strong that you could actually control it once it evolves

Ahh! Pokémon Blue days! Buying the Magikarp, putting it in front of your party, then beginning the grind of switch training through Mt. Moon and swapping it in for experience from every Pokémon during the trainer battles! Hitting level 15 so it learned Tackle was so relieving! “Now I can fight the weaker Zubats for the exp!” I felt so accomplished for having my Gyarados by the time I left Mt. Moon! I always wanted to have it before fighting my rival on the Nugget Bridge and before fighting Misty for my second badge! It was a long grind, but back then Gyarados was definitely worth the work!

@@dieabsolutegluckskuche5174 I mean for me it mostly just depends on which game it is. B2w2 and the swsh dlcs add enough for it to feel worth the purchase but ones like emerald and platinum that just tweak the climax a little bit arent Plus it also depends on whether or not you take advantage of pokemon's replayability. Since you can have an entirely different team every single playthrough I find that im able to play a pokemon game like 5 times through before I start getting bored of it (spacing out the playthroughs a bit of course) The best example I can think of to explain it is comparing it to breath of the wild. Theyre both 60 dollars, but breath of the wild is worth it since its an amazing experience that I played twice while pokemon is worth it because its a fun yet simple experience that I got to experience like 6 times. So is a single playthrough of sword and shield worth 60 dollars? No. Is it still going to pay for itself since ive replayed it like 4 or 5 times doing nuzlockes, typelocks, and soul links in the past year since it came out? Yup

I mean, you could easily just not use the xp candies if you think its too easy. Switch training still exists, so its only your fault if you purposefully decide to take the easy way out And its not like being stuck at a gym with level 40s while all the wild pokemon and trainers are only level 25 is that fun. You arent "learning how to use them in battle" youre just spamming ember at rattatas until you run out of pp. The old games arent hard, theyre just tedious, and thats coming from someone who grew up with firered and leafgreen. The only pokemon game thats actually difficult is ultra sun and moon, because the npcs actually have good strategies, evs, and move-sets

@@dubiousdeliquite6641 Switch training? Exp.share is permanent and cannot be turned off, Easy way out? You mean disregard the fastest way to train Pokémon in a game legitimately? Been playing Pokémon since the 90s, you don’t need and never have needed level 70s or 80s to beat the game. Most of the time levels 30-50s can do it easily enough. My complaint is the fact the developers aren’t trying to make the game challenging anymore, they aren’t fleshing out the game anymore, instead they are putting a 1 zone to rule them all kinda system, instead of making players have to explore they just hand feed you levels experience and plot points now. I mean did you even see the caves in sword and shield? Literally could just push up on the joystick and look away for a few seconds. Compare that to mt.moon in red, people would get lost in that cave, (they had to hand out escape ropes ffs) I mean you would get a sense of “oh crap will I make it out alive” compared to sword and shield which is more along the lines of “oh crap I’ve got to start a camp because one of my Pokémon is tired” I’m not saying exp candies and exp.share are bad system, but they are the only systems in the game that you can use now. Instead of making them systems that can be accessed at the end of the game or at the midway point, they open them up to you at the VERY start. I mean you can hoard candies, go capture a level 1 random and BAM it’s level XX. The second you catch it. My biggest complaint is that these systems have made any other training method invalid or impossible now. You can’t just walk through grass now because randomly “extremely strong” Pokémon will attack, (which for some dumb reason you can’t even capture) You can’t switch train because of exp,share, You can’t turn off those systems either. I mean, when you can “train” several teams up to the 40s-50s in just a handful of hours, before even facing the first gym . The game is broken
@dubiousdeliquite6641
@dubiousdeliquite6641 2 жыл бұрын
@@therealdontclickme except you are still the one making the decision to feed your pokemon xp candies. Xp candies dont make other training methods "impossible", they just give lazy people or older players who are too busy to spend time grinding an option to train up their pokemon. If YOU decide to feed them to your pokemon then YOU are the one whose made the game easy. If I trade over the team I beat the elite 4 with from firered to emerald and used them to sweep through the game that doesnt mean emerald is some baby game, it just means that I used an option available to me to make the game easy Ive done a few nuzlockes in sword and shield, and every time I essentially have 10 or so pokemon rotating through my team. I dont use xp candies, but I do fight every trainer available. The end result is that im almost always on-level. The only time I got noticeably overleveled was the fire gym, but after that there was a bit of a level jump and it rebalanced itself soon after. And I always have my lowest level pokemon at the front of the party, and that position was constantly changing because while yes the xp share does make it easier to keep everyone up switch training still exists since the pokemon used in battle get twice as much xp as those who are just given the share Either way I just dont get why people are whining about xp candies when they are totally optional. Xp share? Sure I can understand that, but dont blame the game designers just because you dont have any self control. Same thing goes for camping. I only use the camp feature to play with my pokemon, but I dont feed them because it heals them and gives them affection benefits Part of what I like about pokemon is that even when its easy and designed for kids you can still impose rules that make it difficult and fun thanks to the nature of an rpg where your party members arent chosen by the story. X and y are baby-easy, but I can still make them difficult and fun by doing a nuzlocke where I train and rotate between 3 teams, making me always be underleveled. As long as you have the self control to give yourself a challenge then pokemon is the best of both worlds. Tldr if you dont like xp candies then just dont use them you numbskull

Sure, it wasn't available as early as Magikarp, but it was still entirely feasible to use that, rather than switch training, to evolve one and still have it be relevant. After all, you'd be facing wild 'mon with levels in the 20s on Route 15, where you got the Exp.All, and Gyarados got Bite at 20 and Dragon Rage at 25.

@@trevorrobaldo319 My point was about not having to do switch training to evolve magikarp, nothing else. Instead of painfully switch training the mt moon magikarp to lvl 20 before Misty, you could have used that time to reach Celadon City. Switch training is really that bad and slow, not mentioning unfun. Using the day care for the lvl 5 mt moon magikarp gets you the best of both worlds, you would have a gyrados before lavander town, and would not have lost hours switch training instead of playing. Switch training is the equivalent of grinding 3 hours in the starting area of an rpg, only to get a weapon equivalent in power of what you can buy in the next area, which is accessible 10 minutes from the start.

But also outlevelling your opponents is just insanely easy, and not just easy but to the point you can barely even avoid doing it... I realise grinding is something you want to avoid, but they could put them up some 5-10 levels on the end content and it wouldn't be an issue at all.

@@dubiousdeliquite6641 I didn't. The game was still ridiculously easy. The old school exp share gave 50% exp to the battling pokemon and 50% to the one holding the item. Sword/Shield's automatic exp share gives 100% to the battling pokemon and 50% to every other pokemon in your party. There's no need to ever grind or switch train. And then on top of that, maximizing their friendship at the pokecamp lets them do even more. You get: +20% experience Decent chance of enduring a hit that would have knocked it out Chance of recovering from status conditions Slim chance of avoiding opponent's move Increased critical hit ratio (And of course, exp just for cooking and playing with them) Also, you should be a tad less antagonistic.

@@tomc.5704 that reply wasnt aimed at you, it was aimed at the original commentor But also I dont mind not being forced to grind wild pokemon. My ideal pokemon game is like ultra sun and moon, where as long as you fight every trainer you see you will essentially be on-level the entire game because they actually took xp share into consideration when designing the trainers, and battles are difficult because the npcs use actual strategies instead of only being "strong" because of level gaps. Having to grind for 2 hours because the gym leader has a level 40 pokemon but all the nearby wild pokemon and trainers are level 25-30 is just annoying. Its not rewarding to spam ember on wild pokemon until you finally hit a decent level. And camping is also another optional feature. In sword and shield I camp all the time and play with my pokemon, but since I only cook for them 2 or 3 times (and because I use rotating teams) their affection never goes up high enough for those effects to kick in. Even if I played with them for a long time it was never a particularly impactful amount of xp, at most just half a level. The only useful item or feature that isnt optional is the xp share, but even then its not inherently bad as long as they pace the game to suit it properly like usum. For me in sword and shield I rotated between two teams, fighting every trainer possible but not grinding wild pokemon or candies, and the only time I got overleveled was at the fire gym, but then the next route jumped trainers from around 25 to 30 so it fixed itself soon enough. Im not saying sword and shield is some masterpiece or anything, but I dont think its as bad as people say it is. In my opinion if you use xp candies then you have nobody to blame but yourself
