World renowned designer and designer the F430 & FXX, Frank Stephenson, weighs-in on the design of Ferrari's most recent release and sketches then renders how he feels it could have looked!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all,
It's always a very special episode whenever I get to speak about something new from Ferrari. Since I have a personal history with Ferrari, having designed cars for them myself, I decided to get the pen and paper out for this episode and show you exactly how I feel this design could have turned out.
Enjoy,
Frank

Little to add to your comment. Every single detail mentioned by Frank makes perfect sense and would improve this already wonderful car. I agree especially with the ideas about the window line (eliminating that ridiculously superfluous black plastic bit) and the rear lamps, which should be round - single or double, who cares?At present they look like contrived sunglass designs.
@paulj9821
@paulj9821 2 жыл бұрын
@@DrMacCandless The thing is guys, Ferrari has some of the best designers in the world. They aren't stupid and are well aware that people will take issue with certain design ques. Personally I dislike the modern Ferrari look. The 458 design was iconic and will go down in history as one of Ferrari's best but they whored that look out for over 10 years. Sadly the new direction they have gone towards is very disappointing to me and many other Ferrari enthusiasts. Also the headlights in both this model and the Sf90 are atrocious. I would love to hear why Ferrari decided to with this design path but I fear this will probably never happen.

Frank, you are a true master and I have great respect for your aesthetic sensibilities. My only disagreement with your re-design centers around the taillights. The large full circles I think could be improved by flattening the top of the circle, allowing for an unbroken continuation of the trailing edge of the wing. I think this would be consistent with the overall design, yet embody the traditional taillight element. Just my opinion.

Good stuff - the "after" renderings were so much better to my eyes. Amazing to see how Frank only needs to draw one or two lines to get the point across, just a quick stroke here or there...amazing. The difference at the front with the subtle change to the intake was sooo much greater than I expected. For me, the back lights should be lower - more 250LM than 458, and the exhaust needs a complete rethink - it belongs on a Lamborghini, not a Ferrari! It's fascinating to watch this stuff. Cheers Frank!

The Design isn't a show stopper. It really lacks the "WOW" factor Ferrari is known to have throughout their past. My 14 year old nephew, who is a car fanatic, reacted with a "meh" when I asked him what he thought of the design. If it doesn't inspire a 14 year old that loves modern sports cars and make them want to have a poster of the car on their bedroom wall, then maybe its time to reassess your direction. Keep the videos coming Frank! We love em!

I like the new rear, but I like the black rocker panel better, it keeps the body slim and raked, plus it ties in the front splitter to the back diffuser. Smoothed in, it looks undefined and a bit thick. I like the mirrors as is also, I think they are a cool design element and should be featured. I'd try a lower window line that extends way back into the buttress, making it even more like a canopy. I think the angular window line matches the rear engine cutout shape. I think smoothing them out makes the car too smooth looking and it loses the nice angular lines. I think the wheels look a bit on the delicate side, like they would twist if given too much power, if the spokes were a bit thicker, I think they would look better.

The legendary Testarossa didn't have round tail lights, and it's one of the most iconic Ferraris of all time. It's immediately recognizable as a Ferrari.

And when it was redesigned into the F512M with the rounded front end like other 90s Ferraris and obviously the circular rear lights, it looked terrible. It's the best Testarossa, but its visuals don't make sense.

The recent change re taillights at Ferrari looks like they belong on a Corvette. Round but possibly smaller than the revised version. Door changes are a big improvement. Roof in carbon fibre maybe instead of black to slim it down. I just don't like the trend to dress up exhausts. Twin straight black pipes like 488 that mirrored the taillights.. Functional, purposeful, deliberate, end of story!

Frank, you took a stunning design and made it even better! Agree with you, the highlight of the original was the wheels, and you really made it look Ferrari with those round tail lights, absolutely marvelous! I'd but one 296 Stephenson edition! =One Love= -A

im not an expert and this is my honest opinion: Looks like a Lotus evora GT… i dislike the new Ferrari looks with the sf90 and the f8 and now this.. I feel like the Identity is lost.

@@fredriksvard2603 the only Ferrari that looks like an Aston is the Roma. As for McLaren, even my mother who didn't care a bit about cars was able to tell apart a Lamborghini, from a McLaren and a Ferrari. Especially McLarens are so ugly these days, it's hard to see anything different in them. The McLaren GT is an exception, it looks like a better C8 Corvette

i don't really like where the whole automotive industry is headed right now designwise, feel like cars in 2010-2015 had the perfect combination of curvature and angularity. The optics in particular is just getting out of hand right now, there is so much room for creativity, but it's so easy to fuck up

Fantastic reviews etc., they give an insight for a car design that I've never seen before. Now that I've started watching these, I won't be able to stop until I've watched them all. Great work, great designer. My first car was a 1955 Citroen L15 and over the next few years I progressed to a 1965 Citroen DS21. I've subsequently owned several more, all post-1967 that have the new "Shark" nose. I rate these as the best looking car of all time! I'm sure it would be challenging for Frank to provide a breakdown of the design process for these and I would be absolutely thrilled to see it. Is that a big enough hint?

Very good job! The only thing missing for me are the headlights: I was really waiting for you to redesign them totally. It will be cool to put high resolution links in description to enjoy even more the work. Also letting the viewers making their own redesign, and you reviewing it almost like the concept car we are already making on this channel.

Great review; I like the changes (for the most part) that you made. However, giving the Honda E Concept a score of 10 is absurd. It is a boring, drab, vapid awful "design." Honda has not made a car with a good exterior design in 30 years. The original (and even the 2nd generation ) Honda CRX's were excellent, well thought out designs.

Wow the changes you made are really great!! It was a pretty nice car to begin with but the way you sorted it really makes it look more clean and purposeful, I think the round taillights really work well although maybe a little bit further apart would make it look even more planted from the rear view ;) awesome redesign! :)

So nice to listen to your thoughts on the new car designs Frank. You have a very clear, friendly and insightful way of presenting your thoughts. Looking forward to watching more content. Please could you review the design of the new Subaru BRZ? You could compare it to the old model or compare the design against the Toyota GR86 interpretation. I had the old BRZ in the Subaru blue and I'll be buying the new one when it comes out in Dubai. Thanks again for creating such great content : )
