In an exclusive interview the UK’s former Ambassador to the US, Sir Kim Darroch, tells Newsnight’s Emily Maitlis he does not regret criticising Donald Trump in briefings later leaked to the media, in which he described the president’s government as "dysfunctional" and ”inept" in private letters. The UK's former ambassador to the US has told BBC Newsnight he does not regret criticising Donald Trump in briefings later leaked to the media.
Kim Darroch quit last year after it emerged he described the US President's government as "dysfunctional", "inept" and "divided" in private letters.
But its disclosure to the media was a "vindictive" breach of trust, he said.
Lord Darroch left his post in July 2019 amid a huge diplomatic row over the leaking of a series of private cables, in which he had questioned the competence of the Trump administration and its handling of major foreign policy issues, such as relations with Iran.
In response to suggestions the prime minister could modify the Brexit withdrawal agreement, Lord Darroch told Newsnight “the idea that you could re-write your part of the agreement is just unacceptable” and “it’s a breach of international law."
Newsnight is the BBC's flagship news and current affairs TV programme - with analysis, debate, exclusives, and robust interviews.

Lord darroch is an arrogant, pompous moron and I’m being honest and I should be respected for that- that’s the level of your logic. Take your blinkers off and try and look subjectively at what trump has done. I could list many accomplishments that I bet you never heard about on the BBC. My guess is that you are very tuned into the lame stream media to get your views on the world and trump and then won’t fathom why he will get voted in for a second term because the people of America didn’t know what they were voting for right?😉

Wouldn't it be nice if someone on KZfaq were to write an interesting, thoughtful comment that had something to do with the content of the video they were commenting on (rather than the cacophony of tedious, one-off gotchas), and that other people replied to with equally thoughtful perspectives, and that comment/thread were to be the top comment of all? What a world that would be.

@Louise X I don't know what could possess you to think that is anything other than an apples and oranges comparison. No American ambassador to a foreign country has been caught insulting the leader of the country in which he is stationed during Trump's time in office. If that happened and Trump didn't remove his ambassador, only then could one accuse of him of hypocrisy on this issue. To be more clear: the issue isn't that Darroch was the victim of a leak, it is that his job was all about staying in the good graces of his host and the leak made that impossible.

“There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.” (Jesus Immanuel the Messiah, at John 15: 13) - Yet all religions are still crucifying his true teaching, including that of the Pope and Christianity! - For religions are all led by the many wayward blind guides and false prophets who are misleading us; when only he alone was sent by the Lord God, to be always our one Teacher and to set us free from all religions … “I will raise up for them a prophet like you [Moses] from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth.” - (Deuteronomy 18: 18) - “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign: A young woman is with child, and she will bear a son, and will call him Immanuel.” [“God is with us”] - (The Prophet Isaiah 7: 14) - “If you have ears to hear: then hear.” - (Jesus Immanuel, at Mark 4: 23) - “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” - (Jesus, at John 4: 24) - “In truth I tell you, anyone who gives heed to what I say and puts his trust in him who sent me, has hold of eternal life and does not come up for judgement, but has already passed from death to life.” - (John 5: 24) - “Beware of false prophets, men who come to you dressed up as sheep while underneath they are savage wolves. You will recognize them by the fruits they bear.” - (at Matthew 7: 15-16) - “Any plant that is not of my heavenly Father’s planting will be rooted up. Leave them alone; they are blind guides, and if one blind man guides another they will both fall into the ditch.” - (Matthew 15: 13-14) - “Do not call any man on earth ‘father’; for you have one Father and he is in heaven. Nor must you be called ‘teacher’; you have one Teacher, the Messiah.” - (Matthew 23: 9-10) - “I am the light of the world. No follower of mine shall wander in the dark; he shall have the light of life.” - (Jesus, at John 8: 12) - “Take care that no one misleads you: For many will come claiming my name…” - (Matthew 24: 4) - “Many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many; and as lawlessness spreads, men’s love for one another will grow cold. But the man who holds out to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the Kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the earth as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come.” - (Matthew 24: 11-14) - “You shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” - (John 8: 32) - “When you pray, go into a room by yourself, and shut the door. Pray to your Father who is there in the secret place; and your Father who sees what is secret will reward you. In your prayers do not go babbling on like the heathen, who imagine that the more they say the more likely they are to be heard. Do not imitate them. Your Father knows what your needs are before you ask him. This is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, Your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven, Give us today our daily bread, Forgive us the wrong we have done, as we have forgiven those who have wronged us. And do not bring us to the test, but save us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, for ever. Amen. For if you forgive others the wrongs they have done, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, then the wrongs you have done will not be forgiven by your Father.” - (Matthew 6: 6-15) - “Pass no judgement, and you will not be judged. For as you judge others, so you will yourselves be judged, and whatever measure you deal out to others will be dealt back to you.” - (Matthew 7: 1-2) - “Truly I tell you; if anyone obeys my teaching he shall never know what it is to die.” - (John 8: 51) - “Always treat others as you would like them to treat you: that is the Law and the Prophets. Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.” - (Matthew 7: 12-14) - “I am the gate; anyone who comes into the fold through me shall be safe. He shall go in and out and shall find pasturage. The thief comes only to steal, to kill, to destroy; I have come that men may have life, and may have it in all its fullness.” - (John 10: 9-10) - “I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world” - (John 12: 47) - “Whoever then will acknowledge me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven; and whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.” - (Matthew 10: 32-34) - “I am the way; I am the truth and I am life; no one comes to the Father except by me. If you knew me you would know my Father too.” - (John 14: 6-7) - “The disciples came and asked Jesus, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?’ He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me. If anyone causes one of these little ones-those who believe in me-to stumble, It would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!’” - (Matthew 18: 1-7) - “Though many are called, few are chosen.” - (Matthew 22: 14) - “An expert in the law, [a leading religious Pharisee] tested him with this question: ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. That is the greatest commandment. It comes first. The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. Everything in the Law and the Prophets hangs on these two commandments.’” - (Matthew 22: 35-40) - “There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.” - (John 15: 13) - "Stay awake, and pray that you may be spared the test: The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." - (Matthew 26: 41) - “However, when he comes who is the Spirit of truth; he will guide you into all the truth.” - (John 16: 13) - “My task is to bear witness to the truth. For this I was born; for this I came into the world, and all who are not deaf to truth listen to my voice.” - (John 18: 37) - Yours always, in true Spirit and in our one given prayer, 2gointruth, Thursday the 10th of September, 2020: - (Matthew 5:14-16) - Where every minute (of both day and night) can be a new beginning for any one of us.
