Welcome to Bre & Casey’s #ExcellentAdventureVan!
After nearly getting stranded in Truckee, we decided to upgrade our van’s starting batteries. We’ve always just defaulted to Optima’s, but when we discovered they were no longer making their batteries in the USA, we decided that we wanted to find an AGM option that was. Enter the Odyssey “Extreme” 65-PC1750! These Group 65 sizes Odyssey’s are built like a tank; what better battery to start a van that’s also built like a tank!? And I (Casey) have been daily-driving the van for about a week since installing these Odyssey’s and can vouch for them being just as good in a hot-start situation as they are cold. I think we’re Odyssey Battery converts; now to start slowly phasing out all of those Optima batteries we own.

FYI. From odyssey tech support I found on a forum. I think this is important if your using AGM in older vehicles w weaker charging alternators : Our thin plate pure lead batteries need to see a voltage between 14.0 and 14.7 volts from the alternator. This is as measured at the battery terminals. Lower voltages will chronically under-charge the battery which reduces battery life. Most vehicle alternators will meet the required voltages, but there are exceptions and ways to work with those. For instance if you find that your alternator only provides 13.8 volts, you could modify the vehicle’s charging system (new alternator, diode to “trick” the alternator into putting out more voltage, etc.). You could also consider using a 12 volt bench charger to charge the battery when the vehicle isn’t being driven."

Thanks for the tip. I did not know that, but luckily my alternator is cranking out 14.25V with the Odyssey batteries installed. I just looked back at the publish date on this video and these batteries have been in the rig for over 2-1/2 years now. This past winter they sat for over a month in temperatures which ranged daily from a lows of 5°F to highs of only 35°F (several days never getting above 25°, and they started the van (without a block heater) in weather that was just over freezing. So, I’m pretty impressed.

@@excellentadventurevan1730 I just purchased my first odyssey too! I returned the h6 yellow top optima. Went down to like 12.5v after car sits for an hour brand new. I’m like, that is not good quality lead. I go to odyssey 12.8 out of box and holds 13-13.1 v sitting all day. Worth every penny.

They’re like the company Optima was a decade ago, @@daveroski. They’ll be my go-to from now on. Just FYI, I’m starting to post some more van related stuff on my other channel (Crazy Casey’s Customs). I was able to monetize that channel; this one never really caught on.

Hopefully the alternator "knows" to push the voltage to a little above 14 so that the batteries won't run chronically low in charge,I see from the label on the battery that they don't want charging voltage to ever exceed,I think,14.7 volts (some cars used to do 15 volts in winter) some vehicles draw a surprising amount of power from a battery when just sitting,things like burglar alarm,fancy radios,even engine and transmission PCM's memory--

After years of the EMT/Paramedics killing the batteries in the ambulances we finally discovered the Odyssey battery. We did use the lead acid ones but we never went back to anything else. They are awesome, best lead/acid batteries period. I haven't tried the agm ones but I will on my RV at some point. 👍👍

Thanks and sorry I never got a notification for your comment. The batteries have been in the van for a little over 2-1/2 years now, and they haven’t missed a beat. This past winter they sat for over a month in temperatures which ranged daily from lows of 5°F to highs of only 35°F (several davs never getting above 25°F, and they still started the van (without a block heater) in weather that was just over freezing. So, I'm pretty impressed.

I believe all odyssey batteries are AGM.

Interesting that the alternator seems to know a difference in the batteries in that it is regulating at a different voltage than with the old ones--perhaps it senses that the Odysseys have a different internal resistance? Normal "12 volt" car batteries have about a 12.6 volt open circuit voltage when fully charged,the Odyssey seems to be a couple tenths higher

Did "Optima" used to be part of Enersys (maker of Odyssey) before it was bought by Johnson Controls and operations moved out of the USA ?

Thanks for sharing! I just ordered a pair of these for my van. How are yours holding up? I am a litle confused by your last segment (11:00) or so; you show the new batteries dropping to 11.76v while cranking but in watching the video I am pretty sure they actually dropped to 10.88v. Has that drop changed at all with the batteries fully charged / and now 2 years old?

I have a none battery question on Amazon you purchased a vantop rear view mirror camera I have a similar van and was wondering if the cable is long enough to install above the rear doors on the van our do you recommend purchasing the extended cable?

I’m sorry I didn’t see this sooner. You do not need the extended cable.

How low can the voltage get before it won’t crank the truck anymore?

I’m not sure, but I think dipping into the 10’s is getting pretty close to where you start experiencing issues.

Gasoline engine should be able to crank (but barely) at 7.2 volts under load but at room temperature anything below 9.6 volts is supposed to mean that it's time to replace (unless the battery just needs to be charged) I think the glo plugs on the Diesel take a bit out of the battery before the cranking operation @@excellentadventurevan1730

The proper thing would have been to load test each battery before installing them. A 100A load tester (like the ones you can get at Harbor Freight), is a good way to do that. Also, why devote a good portion of the video to weight? Who cares about a 10 pound difference per battery in a large vehicle? We already know from the spec sheet how much the battery weighs. These are very nice batteries. I own one. I have a very old Odyssey battery that is estimated to be 20+ years old and it still works (but at reduced capacity).

I appreciate the feedback. We’re just kind of figuring this whole KZfaq thing out, and hearing from our viewers means a lot to us. For this video, we wanted to do something more exciting than an unboxing video, but we also do not have a load tester, so we were trying to make the video as interesting as possible given the tools we had to work with. That’s pretty great that you have a 20 year old Odyssey; that gives me some serious confidence that these should last the life of this van. I talked in the video about being an Optima guy; my very first Optima (I purchased it in 2004) was still going strong in a pickup truck I sold back in 2015. That truck ran a B&M blown 355 Chevy V8 with 30° of timing on a locked distributor. That poor battery got “load-tested” every time it had to crank against all of that timing, while turning a supercharger. 11 years old and it did it with ease. I’d bet it’s probably still alive and well. Optima doesn’t build them like they used to...let’s hope Odyssey does! Thanks again for the feedback!

The batteries are harder to lift to get them into the car than other batteries. A bit scary to trust the built in handle with all that force but mine didn't break. I don't think any other type 65 battery weighs as much as 50 lbs. If possible I try to get my grip under the bottom of the battery if I move it or take it out of the car (unless I intend to get rid of it like my Interstate battery that was slo crank)
