I have my eye on this one and started looking for some user reviews. Need to justify it because it's a pretty specific piece. Really good job with this man. I care about how stuff can be worn and its performance. I got that from this. And the fact that you pointed out the cuffs, which jumped out at me immediately as a negative when I started looking in to it, gave me some trust in your opinion. Thanks.

Awesome review Luke. I have this jacket and have not used it on a hike. I also have the Marmot Ether Driclime and I think they are comparable in terms of use. The Marmot is my go to jacket on cool mornings and afternoon during fall and spring or on windy days.

Is it stowable, I've been looking at the Arteryx incendo hoodie as a water-resistant layer that I can have with me at all times in an edc backpack. I would've bought it already but I can't seem to find many decent reviews of it, if you can get stuff from Arteryx I'd love to see you review it.

I just picked one up on the OR website for $65 in an off color (rust/orange like yours). Is there some sort of fleece material on the inside? I wanted something other than my OR rain jacket to wear as an exterior layer- I like the stretch factor....I just hope it fits, I am a XXL, and it seems like a third of the things I look at/buy are for trim fit people.....I am NOT a trim person by any means, so having a regular fit is a plus. Planning on wearing my down jacket or my vest under it with a lighter hooded (100-200wt fleece) under that. The jacket just looks sharp!

Great review Luke. I'm wondering how to stow the hood when I don't need to use it. I'd rather it not be out flopping around. Thank you.

You mentioned you went up a size, but didn't say which size you got. What size did you get and what is your height/ weight? I'm 5'6" 165lbs, looking at size medium to wear over baselayer and a light fleece half zip.

I must admit I'm a bit confused by layers like this. Is this a "fair weather" jacket only and is nice to use because it's breathable? Since I've gotten drenched in a few showers while out camping with "weather resistant" layers, I now always bring a waterproof layer. If it gets cold I throw on a down jacket underneath that waterproof layer. Wouldn't it's breathable attributes be nullified by wearing the down jacket?

+Mark Thompson Softshells are for what I consider 'in-between' weather events. Example: damp out, foggy, misty, for snow and wind but not for when rain is being called forecasted. They are breathable, strong, water-resistant, wind-resistant and offer a high degree of movement and what jackets like this do best is keep your dry while sweating and while blocking wind and/or damp weather. I've found that as with most things in life, there isn't a one item which fits all needs and this is a good example of that. It fits some needs but not all of them when it comes to the outdoors. The same goes for a hardshell (fully waterproof jacket) as well. "Wouldn't it's breathable attributes be nullified by wearing the down jacket?" : Nope, not at all and that is a big PLUS for this jacket as it performs MUCH better than fully waterproof jacket considering that even with the best of hardshells will collect moisture on the inside which can be a problem with down. I hope that helps brother. Have a great one. - Luke

+Mark Thompson I believe this jacket is to Marmot's Ether Driclime. I have both jackets but I've only got to use the Marmot so far in my hikes. As for the Marmot, it is a very good light jacket that's incredibly windproof, perfect for those sunny, cool windy days hiking. I used mine in Acadia National Park in early October and in Joshua Tree National Park in November. It's my go to jacket that doesn't allow me to overheat (breathable). Let me give you an example... I recently hiked Grand Canyon South rim to North rim and back last November. I brought a Marmot Ether Driclime (windproof jacket), Outdoor Research Helium HD (rain/windproof jacket), and a Rab Microlight Alpine (warm down hoody) and it was an awesome layering system. Beginning of the hike, early morning in the South Rim, temp in the 30's so I initially used the Rab down hoody. As I descend the valley (temp gets warmer), and the sun coming out but the wind remains chilly, I switched to the Marmot Ether Driclime. Temp in the valley was 50-60's so I just had my baselayer, a Paganonia Capilene 1 long sleeve. North rim was in the 20-30's that night so I used both the Marmot and Rab down hoody. Hiking out of the valley in the shade is a little cool so I used the Marmot and add the Helium HD to trap more body heat when I'm not exerting too much. Hope this helps.

+TheOutdoorGearReview This looks like it would be nice to wear on a cool day or cool summer evening when it gets a little chilly. I used to have a North Face shell that I wore when it was chilly in the morning or on cool days. It also was waterproof, but light enough to wear when it's just cold enough that a shirt only isn't enough. You could also layer it for when it got to be 50 or so. I wore it for over 10 years and haven't found anything as good that I could replace it with. I don't know if I like the in-between jackets like this because you don't know if it is going to rain hard if you are out hiking or doing something else. It seems you have have to bring two outer layers just in case it really rains hard. If your down jacket doesn't block wind, is it a good idea to bring it hiking. Maybe a layer that is warm and blocks wind is a good idea. They do make waterproof down as far as I know.
