Boris FX Optics 2022 adds improved alpha support for working in Adobe Photoshop. In this tutorial, Ben Brownlee takes you through some of the more common workflows for dealing with layer masks and alpha channels.
In the first section we look at how to take an EZ Mask out of Optics and work with it further in Photoshop. The second section shows how to take layer masks from Photoshop, work further on them in Optics, and take them back out to Photoshop. The third section is all about adding Optics to text layers, and how some effects generate their own alpha channel. Finally, we see how to render from Optics without alpha, for those times when you want to complete the composite in Photoshop.

At minute 7:21, what button did you press or what did you do to make the mask appear?

M for Mask. Sorry I didn't say that in this tutorial. I always try to call it out.

How can I export the mask in standalone optics?

The standalone won't export the alpha mask separately, because it's doing all its compositing in the app. But there is a trick to get a black and white alpha out that you can use in another application. With your mask created, add a new layer and add a Color filter. Set this to black and copy your mask up from the previous layer. Add another layer and Color filter, setting this to white. Drag your mask up again to copy it from a previous layer and then invert the mask. Boom, a black and white mask to use as an alpha channel elsewhere. I will add a feature request though for direct alpha saving from Optics. I can see why that would be very useful.
